The official Legend of Zelda timeline revealed photo

A few days ago, we told you that an official Zelda art book containing the definitive timeline for the series would be released. Well, with the book out in Japan, that timeline has been officially revealed. All the historic events and videogames have been reconciled, with various splits into alternative universes. It's pretty crazy.

The existence of an official "timeline" has been a source of frantic debate among gamers. Some have claimed no such thing exists, and even among those that do, there has always been arguments over the sequence of events. No matter what happens, nobody can ever seem to agree.

One would think that this timeline will put an end to one of the oddest gamer controversies around, but something tells me that many still won't be satisfied.

In any case, you can view the chart (as seen on Zelda Universe) below. Don't read if you never want to know, obviously!

Makes sense, though the "Hero of time is defeated" line is a bit confusing for me since I haven't played much of the games in it. I guess the "Sealing War" implies that Ganondorf was sealed by the Sages, but Link himself did not defeat him.

Wait wait wait .... I see no entry for the most crucial Zelda game of them all Zelda Wand of Gamalon for the CDi. Obviously there is some massive conspiracy at play to the ends that this key piece of zelda lore is overlooked as so no one learns the truth!

The Sacred Realm is a Lie!

I think the Sealing War or the Tri-Force Using Monarch could make for some interesting games.

Even if I cared about Zelda, a timeline would not be important to me.

Why can't they just be self contained stories

No way man, we need a game that explains Majora's Mask origins. I can't die happy unless such a game is made.

That makes a lot more sense. Especially if you put child era on top of adult, which makes MORE sense.

So, they should continue the series with a new 'A New World' story, since Hyrule is supposedly reborn according to the timeline.

I like it. A lot. I figured some of it out during my Zelda quest this year, and after piecing it together, it makes sense.

However, I think this will take away from the magic of future games. It almost feels like they have to explicitly say where every game fits now when releasing it. I think they should have waited (like they planned to).

@J03
As another commenter brilliantly brought up - it's not that you "don't finish OoT". It's when you actually go INTO the future (1), you leave the "present" (2) behind to fail. When you come BACK from the future at the end of OoT, you actually come into a DIFFERENT past (3).

If you recall, at the end, you come back into the child era with having never met Zelda (or gathered for instance, the Goron's Ruby, as a child).

Still doesn't particularly explain how every "Hyrule" has completely different geographies and landmarks, or how Ganon has been "resurrected" 20 times, but I don't think it even needs to. If you ask me, it'd be a lot better (and simpler) if they didn't try to maintain this sort of timeline for the Zelda games.

Just let each game be their own thing, you know? "Old legends passed down through the ages" so various details have gotten altered through countless retellings, or something.

This entire article must be an elaborate joke, because it was written by Jim Sterling and I don't see any sarcasm in it at all!

Good one, Jimbo! You almost got us this time. Making up crazy names for all the different ages in Zelda's history was a nice touch, but you slipped up by being too dead-fucking-serious in your writing.

Funny how Link's Awakening is my favourite of the franchise by far. Yet it's the most irrelevant in the timeline, or in terms of traditional plot arc.

Haha, me too. I loved that game. The rest always felt like there was too much "fluff" between exciting areas, Link's Awakening was just like BAM GO! I guess the "small" scale of the gameboy forced them to condense the world, which might be why I liked it *shrugs*

What ever happened to the old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it?" This timeline they've whipped up is a mess. Zelda has no need of timelines damn it!

Whatever, if this helps them in terms of storyline from here on then I guess this is a good thing.

All I know is I've beaten just about every Zelda game and I was fine with them being (what I thought were) self contained adventures.

I don't really care either way. I play Zelda for the overall gameplay experience, the story (while not bad) is just kind of secondary to me.

Still doesn't touch the Castlevania timeline which has so many caveats that it continually breaks rules established in earlier games.

The "Hero of Time is defeated" one is simple. If you go back in time to use the song of storms which you couldn't know as a kid if you lived normally, the future is changed. Thus, when Link returns to the future, it is not the same future, and the future where he learned the song of storms is never explored by Link again. Thus, Ganon had to be sealed.

I'm not going to be like some Zelda fans who are fine accepting two timelines from the Ocarina split but not three timelines, because reasons. This timeline generally makes sense, and minor details aren't that important when you consider artistic license. My only minor complaints are that there's no definitive placement for the Interloper War (Twilight Princess), which had to have happened before the "brief" period of time of Ocarina and Twilight Princess and couldn't be the Hyrule Unification War.

Now my question is if they'll make some "Crisis on Infinite Hyrules" and tie those three timelines back together in some future game. Could be something to think about, considering that they "supposedly" want to take Zelda in a new direction.

Who plays Zelda for story anyway?

They could easily make a Zelda game where Link travels between those 3 dimensions and somehow combines them. Even make it so each has a different visual style.

Like Spiderman, but good.

To everyone saying things like "it doesn't fit", "it's so confusing" or "is a mess", you could at the very least elaborate on what makes it so, instead of just saying that.

I, personally, find it pretty easy to follow.
