For god's sake it's a competitive shooter... Where the AI randomly chooses to **** over one team and let the other live. I've had rounds where the tank spawned right at the beginning of the level yet when it was the other team's turn... No tank spawned at all. How is that balanced or fair?
No game of the year should ever make me want my money back. I felt ripped off by Left 4 Dead and I have friends that feel the same way.
If I had to give it to any game on that list it would be Fallout 3.
Also, Rock Band goes down so amazingly well at parties.
Also also, GTA was a pretty damn good game and I have never understood the hate it has gotten. I can only imagine that people were expecting a GTA that would cure AIDS and be a combination of every good thing in every GTA ever without anything new at all apart from a new city. I guess trying something different is the wrong thing to do then
Mario Kart Wii blows all the games on the list away and so does Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Also, Tales of Sympthonia 2 blows Lost Oddessey out of the water.
I'm glad that the rest of the population sees HD consoles and games as the gimmicks they really are and prefer innovation like the Wii over redundant games like Fallout 3 nd MGS4.
Destructoid is almost not worth coming to, since it is filled with Microsoft/Sony fanboys.
I would happily have said Fallout 3 though, if Bethesda had actually bothered to do their testing before releasing the game!
In the end, I thought Fallout 3 was ambitious and massive, but it ultimately left me feeling unfulfilled.
L4D, while not a "complete" game as some have said, is a testament to why games became awesome in the first place. Fantastic gameplay. I feel the same way about Castle Crashers.
While the end of Lost Odyssey may have been weak, the overall story was engaging and sometimes heart-breaking. The written story parts were memorable, and made the main character a believable immortal.
I have no PS3, but sadly I have fallen out of love with Solid Snake. I can't attest to whether MGS4 is good or not, maybe I'll try it some day. But if it has 15-minute deathbed monologues then I'll pass. I will hand it to Snake, he has good bedside manner.
@Anviltongue - I totally agree.
[/b]Metal Gear Solid 4.[/b]
Greatest Game I ever played. Epic. If I wasn't so busy I would play it again. Because I probably haven't seen everything yet. Volume all the way up and signed out of PSN. Don't want to be disturbed.
MGS4's should lose because of it's terrible writing and forced explanation of every plot point. Even though, as a MGS fan, I appreciated having everything explained the way they went about it was poison to the gaming experience.
This is the sort of stuff that keeps me coming back for more.
MGS4 was the best game this year, but Hotel Dusk is still GotY 2008.
Also, GTAIV sucks. It is literally the worst game I have ever played in my fucking life. Terrible bugs, no checkpoints (I can't stand that), stupid missions, no checkpoints, stupid characters, a stupid storyline, terrible gunplay, terrible cover system, insane numbers of graphical issues, etc. etc. etc.
Good to see that some sites aren't rolling over on GTAIV's mediocre story just to nab some mentions on the cover of the Greatest Hits version.
Anyway the GTA4 hate is insane on here, maybe overhyped yes, but probably gets my nod. MGS4 is right next to it though, can't wait to replay it. I love lost odessy, but damn the parts where your party get split up are unbearable, why just why?
Out of the list that's there, I would probably give it to castle crashers or Braid - I put stupid amount of hours into both, and they were quality titles.
I can honestly say, after having spent over 60 hours on this game, that Fallout 3 will enter VATS and easily head shot the rest of these games to be crowned 2008 game of the year.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA GTA4 was craptastic. I sold the game after having it a week. Saints Row 2 had so much more FUN stuff to do than listen to Roman or whoever calling you on the phone and ask you to take them out on a date, or chase missions.
lubczyk: Shut the hell up. I sold my Wii to buy a 360 and never looked back, mostly because there were no games worth looking back for. To date there might be 2-3 games on Wii I'd buy.
Sad to see Saints Row 2 wasn't nominated but even if it was I still would go with my pick for GOTY: Fallout 3.
I'll trust your judgment, and I hope for another year of great games in 2009!
1 with XBX360 console exclusive future content.
And 1 PS3 exclusive.
... well there's nothing here for a PS3 owner to complain about.
I wanted MGS4 to be the winner but it will be L4D.
