MGS4 just for the scope and scale of the game that all came together and worked flawlessly. If there wasn't so many other great games out this holiday I'd be replaying it right now.
Tie for me between Braid and Fallout 3. Fallout 3's vast world and sidequests make it a deadly combo. Braid's brilliant execution of the gameplay elements, regardless of length, deserve praise.
I'd put Mother 3 on the honorable mentions list. Probably wouldn't be eligible to win since it wasn't actually released this year, but I think it deserves a nod.
As much as I loved MGS 4, it got way too corny at the end for me to consider it game of the year. Even for a Metal Gear game, it had way too many moments where I just cringed at the hackneyed love stories and contrived death sequences. I would have to go with Fallout 3 just because I BELIEVED it from start to finish.
My vote would go to Fallout 3. It's the only one I've played, but out finalists, only MGS4 would even have a shot at it, even if it's a very slim shot. MGS3 on the other hand would probably beat it.
Left 4 Dead should not even be considered for any Game of the Year award. Limited content, horrible online system (Matchmaking), etc. It's a step backwards for multiplayer shooters in most ways. I stopped playing L4D and went back to TF2 after a week.
For god's sake it's a competitive shooter... Where the AI randomly chooses to **** over one team and let the other live. I've had rounds where the tank spawned right at the beginning of the level yet when it was the other team's turn... No tank spawned at all. How is that balanced or fair?

Prof Layton should have won, but from the ones that made it to the finals, it's Braid that does it for me.
Left 4 Dead is my pick. Most fun game, by far. As good as Castle Crashers was, I feel it should be disqualified, as the broken online play did NOT make it better, and the support for the game has been pitiful, even for a small developer. I don't see anything other than Braid or MGS4 winning this, though. You're so predictable, guys. ;)
My personal GOTY is Rock Band 2. I have not found another game I enjoy as much nor have I found a game I can sit on for about 3 hours a day and not get bored after six months of doing so.
Also, Rock Band goes down so amazingly well at parties.

I hope it's Braid. It tried something different (mainly in terms of story-telling) and succeeded. It seems like a true labor of love.
In the end, I thought Fallout 3 was ambitious and massive, but it ultimately left me feeling unfulfilled.
L4D, while not a "complete" game as some have said, is a testament to why games became awesome in the first place. Fantastic gameplay. I feel the same way about Castle Crashers.
While the end of Lost Odyssey may have been weak, the overall story was engaging and sometimes heart-breaking. The written story parts were memorable, and made the main character a believable immortal.
I have no PS3, but sadly I have fallen out of love with Solid Snake. I can't attest to whether MGS4 is good or not, maybe I'll try it some day. But if it has 15-minute deathbed monologues then I'll pass. I will hand it to Snake, he has good bedside manner.

Castle Crashers or Fallout 3
MGS4's should lose because of it's terrible writing and forced explanation of every plot point. Even though, as a MGS fan, I appreciated having everything explained the way they went about it was poison to the gaming experience.

Left 4 dead for me and Fallout 3 should be out of this list when we think of what it could have been if its inspirations were more from the original fallouts than oblivion

Played all the games on this list, and none of the retail games come close to Saint's row 2 or Gears 2 IMO.
Out of the list that's there, I would probably give it to castle crashers or Braid - I put stupid amount of hours into both, and they were quality titles.

Left 4 Dead. Braid's too beard-strokey, Castle Crashers is too juvenile, Fallout and MGS are re-treads, and Lost Odyseey's too much of an RPG.

I love MGS4 so much, but I'm planning on owning and playing a couple more of these games in the future. Your list isn't very surprising really, and I probably won't mind whichever one wins even though I haven't played most of them.
