The nine levels of 'Cosplay Hell' will burn your eyes photo

I actually have a lot of respect for cosplayers. The dedication it takes to fashion an outfit based on your favorite videogame, comic book, or American Idol contestant is astounding. Truly, we've seen some amazing displays of skill and attention to detail. But sometimes, the complete lack of shame is well ... a bit unnerving, to say the least.

Gameist's recent feature, "The 9 Levels of Cosplay Hell," breaks down the reasons why I try not to leave the house. What if I happen to run into someone -- or something -- dressed up like Yuna from Final Fantasy? And worse yet, what if I can't forget what I've seen?

You've probably seen a lot of this stuff before; the "Tron Guy," for instance, is a classic example of ... OK, I don't really know what the hell is going on there. But it's nice to have some of this stuff in one place, if only to get it out of your system and move on.

OK, now that we've been subjected to this, somebody please -- salvage my weekend and show me example of some amazing cosplay.

[Thanks, darkair!]

To quote the article, "Fuck, how do you get vomit out of a laptop keyboard?"

I think only Red Bull and Grey Goose can save me now.

I think painted on spiderman guy beats TronGuy by a landslide

If you disagree try finding the uncensored photo and you will understand.

Haha, this was pretty funny, and at the same time, very scary.
I feel really sorry for the dogs, actually.

I've seen the worst of it in the seven conventions I've attended.

Speaking of which, where were you all at Katsucon #15?

I see your Samus and raise you another Samus:

and a pretty damn good Yuna:

Of course, the Japanese are light years ahead of us in terms of cosplay.

Samus looks better when it's a real blonde in the suit. The Japanese girl has a killer costume, but the hair is off, and the eyes are WAYYY off. She looks EXACTLY like Yuna though.
I like the first Samus better. (the one darkair posted)

To each his own. darkair's woman definitely matches the Samus look better but there's not much that can be done about race or ethnicity when it comes to cosplay. Still, you're quite right.

What really bothers me is the excessive and cheesy Photoshopping. Also, one of the biggest problems I find with cosplay is that 99% of the time the costume doesn't look remotely real. Sure, a lot of people put time and effort into reconstructing something out of quality materials but they always end up looking waaaaay too clean. Look at Mirax's Link picture. It's pretty impressive except his tights are so white it hurts. It's like bad CG in live-action movies--if it's too clean it looks fake. For example, The Lord of the Rings films did a pretty damn impressive job of overcoming this problem by making their CG and props look used while a lot of the stuff in the first Chronicles of Narnia film looked all shiny and new.

I just realized I'm writing way too much for a cosplay post, so I'm going to stop.

It's because of ugly people, costume conventions are hellish to look at. It should be a crime to be ugly and show it off to people in public. "hmm... I don't remember Luke Sykwalker having a beer belly." "What the hell? I'm pretty sure Frodo didn't have hair ALL OVER HIS BODY." "Nice Hagrid costume, what's that you say? You're supposed to be Harry Potter?! Um yea, I'm going to walk this way..." "GOOD GOD, congrats you fat fuck, you spent hundreds of dollars worth of materials to make a Wonder Woman costume only for it to rip apart when you sat the fuck down, what's worse is the fact that you're a guy." This...this is why we can't have nice things....

While I would question the logic of fat people who cosplay as, well, non-fat characters, I think we're over-reacting. It's not hellish to look upon these people - it's not pleasing to the eye, but then again, most people aren't, cosplay or no cosplay.

Granted, if they jumped around in public in such, er, costumes, then yes, we might have to look into public-decency laws, but they are attending a closed convention.

Personally, I don't understand any type of cosplay at all... it's really strange to me. But if people enjoy it, then we should let everyone enjoy it, not just the good-looking people.

Nothing is worse than what I witnessed at my first con--
A horrendously obese male with unreasonably hairy legs dressed up as Pretty Sasami:

His taller and somewhat thinner male friend was dressed as Pixy Misa. Same guy later seen wearing a costume from a hentai game called Animal Magnetism. (A bunny girl named Milk.)

...I still have nightmares.

Most of that stuff is pretty horrible, but I think it's a bit unfair to take a shot at the bit-players. Hey, look at the 501st legion, they're mostly stormtroopers but they're still awesome. And anyway, it would be a bit of a bummer if everyone showed up to a con dressed as Master Chief.
