It's not that different from playing America in any war. It's just that 'Nam was unpopular so it gets a bad rep. We're dicks no matter who we're fighting, where, or why. It's war after all.
Yeah, we were dicks in the Revolutionary War too.
I'm not condemning war but Vietnam doesn't deserve any more or less scrutiny than all the others. It was just really unpopular and kinda dumb.
altough i do agree war is just a way to throw civilization out of the window, i must say, SOMETIMES there are reasons for war, the main reason is usually the following: "but mom, he started!"
Yeah, which is why I said I'm not condemning war. But you can't pick and choose which ones make you feel "comfortable". You can agree or disagree with certain ones but they should all make you feel uncomfortable. That shouldn't change on a case-by-case basis.
Would you feel more comfortable playing as the Viet Cong? Outlast the Americans and then slaughter your countrymen! Nah, 'Nam was a horribly managed war, but if we're going to visit it at all, I'd still rather play as the US.
@ Xzyliac:
Not sure what point you're trying to make. That all wars are equal? If so I would have to disagree. Some wars are more justified than others, and beyond the reasons for going to war, some wars are simply conducted in a much better way than others, both tactically and ethically.
You can agree or disagree but no American war has ever been conducted in a way that I think justifies a level of "comfort" except maybe that we haven't come out of them completely clusterfucked.
I guess the reason I said it is because I don't see how playing as America in any war can make you feel "comfortable". Especially when your justification for feeling uncomfortable is you're playing as America.
war itself makes me feel the same way, the reasons behind it, is something i can sympatize with in a case-by-case basis
Also increases the likelihood of both armies being treated neutrally by a crazy ammount.
In the first 3 games , you played has the Germans , the British , the Americans and the Russians.
You even have missions with the French resistance, Polish army and Romanian army. I don't think you guys need to worry to much about the Vietnam war being wrongfully portrayed. These guys know their stuff, and they try to emphasize more on the military aspect of the conflict than on the humanitarian side.
I love the Men of War series for that.
You apparently didn't play the first Men of War. You also apparently have never played a PC game, considering you said "$60". As for "pointless".. what the fuck does that even mean? It's a video game.
Anyway, this looks interesting.. I'll throw it up on my radar.
to be honest starcraft 1 was already obsolete by the time age of empires 2 came out
it became ancient when games like company of heroes and world in conflict came out
and starcraft 2 looks outdated as hell and its far from the kind of experience i expect from next gen strategy games
but well thats just me
I don't think the United States, in a general sense, were "dicks" in their role in WWII. In fact that's probably why game developers stick with WWII so much, because it's the last war the US fought in that wasn't morally ambiguous.
Having said that, I find your argument that wars "should all make you feel uncomfortable" really compelling. Perhaps the fact that I don't feel uncomfortable killing Nazis says something about my own conventionalized and over-simplified conceptions of war. :/
Naw, we were assholes in WWII. We were on the right side but we were definitely bakchanded about it.
Maybe she means that we waited until we were actually attacked to join?
@Xzyliac
Just wondering, do you think everyone in every war was an asshole? Or just America? (im not trying to challenge you just wanna know)
Yeah, I have no intent to offend or challenge your views, but is there any war in the history of human conflict you can think of where the means were justified, or do you just think every time America happened to be in a war was for unjustified reasons?
If not, than I suppose Churchill's quote fits the best. "You can count on Americans to do the right thing...after they've tried everything else."
Thanks
