The most played Wii game in America? Super Smash Bros Brawl photo

So many people I know refer to their Wii as a "dust collector" that it gives the impression people aren't playing the system that much, but from the way I've seen people dedicate themselves to 12+ hours of Super Smash Bros Brawl at the NARPs we've had here in Miami, I know some people are certainly spending a healthy amount of time with their Wiis.

It was not much of a surprise to see Brawl at the top of a list recently posted by Kotaku (Via Wii Nintendo Channel) of the most played Wii games in the US (as of August 1st). Here's the rest of the list in order:

2. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
3. Animal Crossing: City Folk
4. Fire Emblem: Raidant Dawn
5. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
6. Call of Duty: World at War
7. Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility
8. Rock Band 2
9. Rune Factory: Frontier
10. Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga

There are definitely a few titles that I never would have guessed in this list, including Harvest Moon and Fire Emblem. I know both franchises to be quite good, but somehow I would never have guessed them to be this frequently played. What do you play the most on your Wii?

Not surprising, but its good to see Rune Factory and Harvest Moon there, I didn't even know they were THAT successful.

I actually just did like a 10 hour Harvest Moon ToT session yesterday. The goal-oriented progression in that game is scary addictive.

Yeah, I'll bet. I even played it for like 100+ hours, and I hate Brawl. Don't play it anymore though. I played Melee again 2 months after Brawl, and it was as if Melee was the sequel that fixed everything.

But these aren't the shovelware that the Wii is famous for.

@gamadaya: If you call overpowering Link, making at least 3 characters useless, making the clones virtually identical to the first characters, choppy hitboxes, and uninteresting stages a fix, then I'd rather Hal Lab not fix anything at all. The only things I miss in Melee was the black hole effect that could crash the Gamecube, and Brinstar Depths stage.

These numbers are surprising, considering console perceptions.

Also, I think the two Harvest Moon (yeah, lets count Rune Factory) titles getting mad play shows that there are people hungry to get their long-form-game on with their Wii even.

Give me cell shaded Oblivion Wii! The Market says it will tolerate it!

I have probably contributed quite a bit to that Brawl statistic. At my university it is basically the staple drinking game/after class game/any spare time and the room has more than one person in it game. I'm actually playing it online right now waiting for my opponent to pick his character and I'm sure to play it tomorrow for the Wii FNF. Everyone I know plays the hell out of this. This does not surprise me at all.

Everyone I know who owns a Wii and isn't a (game journalist) plays it all the time. At this point in the consoles life cycle, it's got more good games on it than the PS3 and 360 combined.

Ah, that's better.

Holmes.

Definitely has a lot of good games. It's just fashionable these days [going out of style thankfully]. The first year the Wii didn't impress and this 'collect dust' meme got way to out of hand by those who felt 'betrayed' by a major corporation. They never really got over it, ignorance is bliss.

I haven't invested nearly as much gameplay hours in Brawl when compared to Melee. However, I prefer Brawl's character roster and stage selection over Melee's.

I recently dusted off my Wii to play Twilight Princess for my first time. So far, I'm totally impressed. I'm even day dreaming of playing it right now. Unfortunately my wife has the TV, but I know once Hyrule has been saved the Wii will sit in the corner once again.

@sporelink

Going to go out on a limb and say its one of two things. The Wii's being used by the majority of people who own Wii-Fit etc. haven't connected it to the internet. The games in this list either have an online multiplayer mode or are the type of games where the people who buy them are the type who will bother to connect their Wii to the net. The other being maybe the people who buy Wii-Fit used it once or twice and haven't bothered with it for a while. Not seeing Mario Kart on this list is weird though.

Hey, a new Harvest Moon game was one of the reasons I dropped the money on my Wii. Too bad I was sorely disappointed, but then again it's hard to rival the glory that was Harvest Moon: Back to Nature. (or 64)

I'd say out of any of the titles I own, Brawl comes in at the top in terms of total hours played.

And what's up with Call of Duty: World at War? Who'd think that a downgraded port would be that popular?

"Everyone I know who owns a Wii and isn't a (game journalist) plays it all the time."

The key words there being (who isn't a game journalist) because normal people play their Wii's just as much as (if not more than) people on the 360, or PS3. I don't own a Wii, but my nephews do and they play it way more than I do my 360. I'm actually surprised at just how little I've played my 360 over the past few months.

Most gaming journalist live in a different gaming world than we do. They get free games sent to them to review. A Steam press accounts. Microsoft sends them free XBL membership, and point cards as well. We don't have that luxury, so really we can't even relate to them anymore!

Someone made a good point about this daa relying on having a wii setup to hit the network, which I guess skews the data yeah?

but... I just find it hard to believe that alot of people don't have their wii hitting the network, like, at all. WiFi seems so prolific, in my mind.

But that's a good qualifier to highlight regarding this data

I have to wonder what the list is relying on: Time played, or number of days the game has been booted, or?

Because if it's total time played, I'm surprised Rune Factory Frontier isn't higher up on that list. It sucks down time like no one's business. 45 hours in the first year of the game, and I'm not past Autumn 11 yet.

01) Tatsunoko Vs Capcom: New Generation of Heroes
02) Fatal Frame IV
03) Monster Hunter 3
04) Phantom Brave: We Meet Again
05) The Conduit
06) Wii Sports Resort
07) Excitebots
08) Super Smash Bros Brawl
09) Animal Crossing: City Folk
10) Trauma Center: New Blood
- I seldom play Super Mario Galaxy because I love it too.
- I did not find No More Heroes enjoyable.

@Loogibot:
"If you call overpowering Link"

I have honestly never heard anyone say that about Link. I've been playing Melee for a long time, and in my experience, neither pro nor noob has ever called Link overpowered. And I really missed the speed of Melee, and the fact that wake up game played a huge role. As for stages, I really didn't play many. Final Destination and Battlefield were enough for me.

@RIMoonlight:

The reason Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is not on the board is because:

'most played' At max, Metroid Prime 3 has about 14 hours of gameplay. Double that if you play hard mode. After that, the replay value is gone. It was one of the easier Metroid games out of the entire series with not much replay value. Granted you could collect stickers for your ship, this was too easy to do and you could get all of the stickers in just a few hours.

The difficulty was not good enough to give it a high replay value.

Fire Emblem is time consuming, and I love it. I still play it to this day.

I'm surprised Super Mario Galaxy isn't up there. To get all of the stars takes quite a bit of time, not to mention the secret stars that you have to wait for comets to attain.

@ Jonathan Holmes:

Agreed 100%. As someone who owns both a Wii and a 360 and has full access to a PS3, I enjoy the Wii the most due the the great library of awesome games that easily conquers the 360s and PS3s. 80% of my gaming is probably done on the PC with another 15% being on the Wii and 5% being on 360, PS3, and older consoles.

Very impressed Fire Emblem is up there, thena gain, that game takes so much play time to beat, and then you're generally tempted to play again, so maybe its not tha surprising.

Also find it strage that SMG isn't on there, I'm on my third playthrough now personally, although I generally play The Conduit more than it recently.

As far as I can tell there's not a single true "Shovelware" title not that list. Makes me glad to see that people playing wiis are actually playing some decent quality games. I still don't get why people say stuff like "I'm going to have to dust off the Wii" or "I never play my Wii" as though it's some sort of badge? I think it's sad that some people have to brag to the internet that they're somehow more of a gamer by saying they wasted money on a console they never use.

@Coffeesash

What kind of games are you playing because I can easily find good Wii games without really trying and I'm realitively picky. People who don't like Wiis are usually the ones who don't like a lot of different genres so although the Wii may have more games for everyone the Xbox/PS3/PC has alot more for certain genres. (BTW not counting you in the category in the above statement as you not bragging about it as some do)
