The most anticipated PSP games of 2009 photo

When you're through laughing at the idea, we'll get right to it. Sony's handheld is a rumor mill favorite lately, and if you listen, you'll hear whispers about anything from a new model in the pipeline, to speculation about the platform being dropped entirely.

The PSP may or may not be skating on thin ice, but either way, it's not about to go down without a fight. In fact, there are several games that some of us are very much looking forward to this year, and you'll find them compiled after the jump.

5. DJMax Fever (January 27th, 2009)

The arcade-only Technika notwithstanding, this is the first official release of a DJMax game in North America. A mix of the original DJMax Portable and DJMax 2, Fever retains the frantic button pressing madness and breathtaking visuals of its predecessors, and won't cost me the extra cash associated with importing it from Korea. It's also got a buttload of unlockables, to keep you playing long after the songs have driven you mad with their catchiness.

4. Samurai Showdown Anthology
(March 10th, 2009)

While the PSP isn't exactly regarded as the friendliest platform for 2D fighters, it's hard for an SNK fanboy to shrug off the idea of having every game in the Samurai Showdown series in his pocket. Anthology packs a true arcade port of all seven games onto one UMD, and throws in wireless 2-player, with a ton of unlockables if you're flying solo. It also marks the first official release of Samurai Showdown 6 in North America. Not a bad deal.

3. Dissidia: Final Fantasy (Q2, 2009)

RFGO's Stella Wong has been rocking the Japanese version of this since its release, and I've been forced to suffer through hearing the classic battle themes from numerous Final Fantasy games while only understanding about half of the dialogue. The North American version is set for a Q2 '09 release, and it's looking both beautiful and action-packed. While I'm well aware that it's just another of Square's fanservice fapfests, I'm not inclined to care when offered the chance to see 20 years' worth of Final Fantasy characters beat the snot out of each other to the tune of some of the finest videogame BGM ever composed.

2. Prinny: Can I Really be the Hero? (February 17, 2009)

This one grants a secret wish I've had for years now. I'm a massive fan of Takehito Harada's brilliant character design, but as much as I love the man's art, I've never been able to stomach the tactics-heavy gameplay of Disgaea. Based on the Japanese demo I've been carting around for the past few weeks, there are some worries brewing about shitty jumping mechanics and redundancy, but when the combat and animation hit the sweet spot the way Prinny does, all the nasties fade away. The gorgeous overall visuals, clever humor and good music don't hurt, either. I'm thrilled to finally have a title in this series that won't make me want to pull out what's left of my hair, and from what I've seen so far, it looks like we've got an awesome little game on the way.

1. Hatsune Miku: Project Diva (Q2, 2009 [Japan])

Ha. See, the beauty of this is that it's my list and I get to pick whatever the hell I want. What I want is Sega's upcoming Project Diva, a Vocaloid-branded rhythm game featuring Hatsune Miku. There are very few things in this world that I love more than Miku, and I don't mind a bit that Sega's cashing in on her popularity. That's because they're doing so by pairing some yummy button-matching gameplay with new and original songs, as well as throwing in some customizable outfits for the young lady herself. It's a Japan-only title, but that's never stopped me before, and I'll be ready to pounce all over this as soon as imports start shipping in.

Honroable mentions:

The Red Star.
The game was fantastic on the PS2, and its jump-right-in, shmup-meets-brawler spirit is perfect for a handheld title. It's a truly worthwhile experience, and well deserving of a second shot for anyone who missed it the first time around.

Star Ocean: Second Evolution.
A lush, beautiful JRPG in my pocket? Yes, please.

Hammerin' Hero.
Atlus. Baseball. 'Nuff said.

5. CID the Dummy (Q2, 2009)

This game is added not only because the PSP's library is incredibly limited, but because I genuinely am interested in this game's backstory. It's set in a world where people have become so afraid of lawsuits, everything must be methodically tested for its safety. It just looks like any old PlayStation-era platformer, but hopefully it's amusing enough to have legs.

4. The Red Star (Q2, 2009)

I always wanted to play The Red Star on PS2 but never got around to it. I was actually incredibly surprised to see that it was heading to the PSP, because I did not know that. Still, now that I do, I am quite pleased and have added it to the list. At the very least, I appreciate the second chance to catch a game I missed.

3. Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce (March 24, 2009)

Strikeforce
is a Dynasty Warriors quite unlike any other, with all sorts of quasi-RPG elements and more than a few similarities to Monster Hunter. It's a four-player co-op game, so good luck finding four people with a PSP and this game. The big differences here include a large amount of customization, Dragonball Z-esque air combat, much tougher enemies and huge boss battles. It's another game I played in Tokyo and I found it quite interesting. Just a shame it's focusing on co-op, which only works in Japan as far as the PSP is concerned.

2. Dissidia: Final Fantasy (Q2, 2009)

It's basically just massive fan service, but there's nothing wrong with that. I got to play a little of this in Tokyo and it was pretty decent, like Crisis Core, only a bit more action-oriented. I'm a bit of a Kuja fanboy, so seeing him again will be the high point of this game. It looks beautiful for a PSP game, as is Square Enix's calling card, and it's probably going to inspire all sorts of horrid fanfiction. I'm in.

1. Prinny: Can I Really be the Hero? (February 17, 2009)

I love sidescrollers, I like Disgaea, so I am pretty certain that I'll love Prinny: Can I Really be the Hero? This is definitely my most anticipated PSP title of the year, although obviously that's not saying much. Provided that the sense of humor and addictive gameplay of the turn-based strategy titles are present in this portable spin-off, I think we'll have a great little PSP game on our hands.

5. Barnyard Blast: Swine of the Night (TBA 2009)

This is a novelty pick. I haven't the slightest idea what the hell Baryard Blast is about, but I will buy it. I made a promise to myself to buy more than five PSP titles this year. The title makes me think it's about zombie pigs attacking farm animals. I want that image stuck in my head until I pop in the UMD.

4. Patapon 2 (TBA 2009)

I loved the first Patapon despite my inability to beat the later levels. This one is touting some pretty cool multiplayer features, which may give me an excuse to actually seek a friend with a PSP.

3. Duke Nukem Trilogy: Critical Mass (Q2 2009)

Hey look, a Duke Nukem game in 2009. I don't know much about this title. Apogee revealed that the game has 3D graphics and multiplayer, which is substantially more than what Duke Nukem: Forever is offering. If anything, the game will feature potty humor and pig cops. It's a winning formula.

2. LocoRoco 2 (February 10, 2009)

I know the Japanese press has already knocked it around, but I'm really looking forward to LocoRoco 2. It's longer than its predecessor and has some pretty hardcore new gameplay enhancements like swimming and biting. Plus, it debuts at 20 bucks. Nothing can beat that.

1. Resistance Retribution (March 17, 2009)

Bend's handheld companion to Insomniac's Resistance 2 is looking like the hottest action title for the PSP since God of War: Chains of Olympus. The integration with R2 is a big selling point for me, but I also think the game's adult-oriented narrative and PSP-specific action won't disappoint. Check out that targeting system if you don't believe me.

_______________________________________________________________________

We're not the only ones who are still getting some use out of "Sony's paperweight." Here's what a few other Destructoid editors are looking forward to:

Jonathan Holmes: Cho Aniki, Patapon 2, Loco Roco 2

Colette Bennett: The 3rd Birthday

Nick Chester: Undead Knights, Patapon 2, LocoRoco2, Resistance Retribution

How about the rest of you guys? Anything you're looking forward to this year? Do you think 2009 will be the "year of the PSP," or do you think it's on its way out? Hit the comments and let us know.

I dunno about Samurai Showdown Anthology... Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX was borderline unplayable due it's supremely shitty d-pad, and using the nub was even worse.

I'll still get SSA though, because I'm a Genjuro/Haohmaru fanboy.

LocoRoco2 is ready to download. It's in the PSN store for 20 bucks. I'd say get it noa!! I love it.

Prinny: Can I Really be the Hero?, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, and Resistance Retribution are on my list too. Pretty good year for PSP already.

My PSP buy list this year will probably be Prinny, Star Ocean 2 and Final Fantasy Dissidia (soundtrack rocks if anyone is curious).

Barnyard Blast was a mediocre DS game. You can find it in the Best Buy $14.99 bins. It's pretty OK, has some funny references, but is largely meh. Don't pay more than $14. Stick with Metal Slug Anthology for portable run 'n' gun on the PSP.

Dissidia is great, it gives an awesome challenge and it gives me that final fantasy fix that I needed.

I can't wait for the Miku game too! I'm always interested in the latest rhythm games to come out.

Prinny, Parasite Eve and SO2 are on my list. Oh and Disgaea 2 whenever that actually comes out here.

Now I'm just waiting for Phantom Brave to be ported (And not to Wii >_>)

I generally don't like to use my fanboy horn, but are we still calling the PSP a paperweight? It has a big enough library to be interesting and I'm sure I'm not the only one with as many PSP games as I have DS. Actually, I think if you exclude ports of old Squeenix games, the DS and PSP have a roughly equivalent number of games to look forward to this year.

I think the idea that the PSP is failing/has failed is one of those perception-thingies...ever since FFT: The War of The Lions and Disgaea came out back to back,it's had a lot of great releases-- especially RPGs. Between FF Dissidia, Prinny, Star Ocean, and possibly the 3rd Birthday if it does indeed come out in '09, I anticipate getting a lot of use out of my PSP this year.

Actually IMO both the DS and PSP are kicking their big brothers asses in regard to quality releases.

@ thefit

The problem with this PSP is that it took forever to fill it's bucket of water. The DS is now filling it's 10th bucket and still going.

Anywho, I'm excited for a few of these titles.

Also, "CID the Dummy?"

@zockroach: It's not man, sorry to say. Phantasy Star on PSP is gonna be based more on Universe's mechanics rather than Online's. If you want something closer to the original, word has it that the recent Phantasy Star Zero on the DS is alot more similar. A friend has the import and he won't stop raving about it.

I'm not proud to know this, but that Barnyard Blast game has been out for the DS for a while now.

I've seen it on the shelf at Target amongst other PS2 and DS shovelware.

http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ds/barnyardblastswineofthenight

And this is the description on the back of the box:

"One Halloween night, young piglet Cliffy Belmart is caught tee-peeing an ancient castle ruled by darkness, and swept inside by horrendous creatures. Instantly aware of the peril, his father Robert Belmart equips with a fully loaded gun and rushes into 6 different worlds with tough monsters and bosses. Is Robert a bad enough dude to rescue his son?"

I love the crap out of Dissidia. I just wish I knew how to read the equipment...

Aside from that, the game's exceeded my expectations. I give it an "A". Can't wait for the English release.

Meanwhile, Prinny's game pisses me off. The platforming feels really stiff and the stages feel kinda bland. I want to love this game so fucking much, but it's just...meh.

You know how some platformers don't let you change your direction in midair? So you jump right, hold left, and nothing happens? There's a reason Super Mario Bros. let you change direction in midair. Over two decades ago. :(

You know what would be nice to see on that list MGS 1 on the PSN. Maybe I should play my psp more, I'm not really a portable gamer, but Patapon 2, resistance retribution and that Duke Nukem game would be interesting. Hopefully they have Duke Nukem 3D, that would be sick! I love that game.

I'm actually going to go on a limb and say I don't really like Dissidia. After a few years of Smash Bros, Budokai Tenkaichi and Narutimate Hero yet another two-attack fighting game isn't doing it for me. That being said, most you probably *will* like the gameplay, but having gotten halfway through the game before quitting I can definitevly say you should not buy it for the story.

I totally expected these lists to only consist of like 4 total games. I was pleasantly surprised with the variety here (it's still sparse but better than I expected).

I will definitely be buying LocoRoco 2 and Prinny, but I'll wait and see about Resistance and Patapon 2.

I already have The Red Star for PS2 (the only copy that my old EB ever got), but it's nice to see that more people might get to experience it's sweetness.

Ohh! And I just remembered that there are two Level-5 RPGs in the works for the PSP that are supposedly due in 2009! I wonder if there's any new info on them...

Actually, I think that d-pad on PSP is one of the better around.

btw, CID the Dummy is out, and it looks and sounds like sh*t :)

btw2, it would be nice to see revised list, maybe after E3, since the line up has been changed significantly.
