The Mortal Kombat Podtoid commentary records tonight photo

It's that time again. After the spectacularly well-received Podtoid 95, we promised that once, every ten episodes, we would record a commentary track for a film adaptation of a videogame. This week, we comment on the first Mortal Kombat film, directed by Paul WS Anderson.

We still need questions, I think, but I doubt we'll actually answer more than one or two on the air. After all, we've got a solid hundred minutes of PG-13 sci-fightin'  to get through.

Still, you can always hit the jump and ask a question or two on the off chance. I doubt this episode will even half as good as Bisontoid given that the Street Fighter film is basically our own personal Citizen Kane, but it's worth a shot.

Seeing as how Mortal Kombat manages to stay true to the game while still having a moderately cohesive story that can entertain non-gamers, would you guys consider this the best game-to-movie adaption to date?

So here goes PST3K version 2.0

In the not-too-distant future --
Next Monday A.D. --
There was a guy named Rev,
Better known as Anthony.
Adheres to the words of Johnathon Blow,
tells us the indie games we should know.
Has a sister with a boyish face,
but his father didn't like her
and wants to kick her in the azzzzzz (METAL GEAR?)

He'll watch gaming movies,
The "best" he can find (la-la-la).
He'll have to sit and watch them all,
And tell us what's on his mind (la-la-la).
Now keep in mind he can't control
Where the hilarity begins or ends (la-la-la)
This is mostly due in part
the help of his podcast friends.

Podcast Roll Call:
Samit! (Sports)
Linde! (Hi there)
Jim Sterling! (BIAS)
Toooooooopher! (whore mouth)

If you're nitpicking what they speak and think
and other mundane facts (la la la),
Then repeat to yourself, "You're just a troll,
you should really just relax"
For Podtoid Science Theater 3000!

Mortal Kombat is undoubtedly the greatest VG movie ever made (so far), so i'm glad Podtoid are showing it some due respect. That said, I also have time (from a sheer entertainment value POV) for Resident Evil and DOA, so I wouldn't mind the same treatment for them.

I think Mortal Kombat was the best video game adaption ever. The first Resident Evil movie was good only up until the middle when the main charecter Kung Fu kicked a freakin dog. Then it got corny... So the best video game adaption is Mortal Kombat and of course the sequel sucked ass.

Watch the Othersiders!! That show is great past the past of greatness! not better than Mortal Kombat but still good.

This is gonna be cool. Also watch for Goro's transition from an intelligent (yet aggressive) being when he talks to Kano to some kind of wild animal during fights. All he says from that point onwards is "RAAAAAWR!".

Should we expect more commentaries to badly adopted video game movies not created by Owe Boll or have the words "Resident" or "Evil" in the title? I dare to dream some day that we can look forward to commentaries of such awful titles as Super Mario Bros, and Double Dragon. Silent Hill might be more or a challenge because it actually wasn't that bad, but I'd rather you didn't do Max Payne. I heard it was so bad you might not all survive.

A game notorious for its violence is released as a PG-13 film without a drop of blood, instead standing on the merits of, what, it's story? What the hell? Wouldn't the movie have been more fun as a bat-shit splatterfest a'la The Story of Ricky?

The 'who gets the first punch' end fight is pretty novel as a point of contention in an end fight. Agree?

Yeah, Mortal Kombat has not horrible acting, not horrible plot, and GREAT fight scenes which makes it easily one of the best videogame movies ever.

If you guys were looking for a good movie to MST3K, you should have gone with MK2. THAT movie was horrible in every way. It didn't even have good fights!

Christopher Lambert, we need more of him.

Who from the Podtoid/Destructoid staff best fits each of the Mortal Kombat film characters?

Also soundtracks for both movies feature amazing techno/trance/industrial music from the 90s.

Now, we know that Zangief can wrestle bears. He can also wrestle E. Honda.

Question is, upon seeing Goro, would he not wrestle him thinking he was in fact, a mutant bear? If this wrasslin' was to happen, would Zangief stand a chance?

Oh, and will you guys be commenting on Super Mario Bros: MOVIE EDITION next?

I have to ask a slightly more serious question than "who do you relate to as an MK character, der de dum dum der?"

Did you guys ever notice that MK, as a franchise, borrowed a LOT of it's themes from movies like Bloodsport. Therein the only purpose for the plot was basically having some convoluted reason on why ice ninja fights lightning god. So in a way it makes MK the perfect video game movie in how it goes back to the exact same format in which the games were based. AKA, story enough only to explain why aggressive blonde female is fighting metalfaced aussie. I love that fact about this movie and wondered if anyone else noticed this as well.

The best part of this movie is that it immediately moves into part 2 (time lapsewise) where johnny cage is immediately killed.

This would bring up an fascinating contest of wit. Topher vs Sterling. Make your top 5 fatalities a person using any video game character, any celebrity, any destrcutoid staff member etc....list them and have a "to the death" topic to vote for the most creative. Ok I'm dreaming that won't happen so...

For each podtoid member....what would your personal fatality be if you could have anything.

How great would it have been if there was a drawn-out fight scene consisting entirely of leg sweeps?

If you guys could pick one line as a "stinger" from the movie like they would play after the credits of every episode of MST3k, what would it be?

Alternatively: just do that.

In the 2nd movie Scorpion and Sub-Zero fought and I was upset that they didn't finish and i was into the fight, so my question is, if those to were to fight to the death, who would win??
