The mighty PS2 continues to trim down, after all this time photo

After getting wind of this piece of news, I don't know whether to pat Sony on the back, or make a spectacle of the whole thing. While the PlayStation 3 is still floundering about just trying to find it's legs after being all undersold and such, little brother PS2 is going through yet another revision for the better. How so? Well for starters, the new Japanese model (not yet announced for the US) otherwise known as SCPH-79000 went on a crash diet.

Considering it already weighed in at a svelte 900 grams I don't think anyone was poking fun at the poor thing's thighs. Nonetheless, it decisively dropped the extra 300 or so grams, and is enjoying the 600 gram life. The new PS2 is rumored not to be any smaller than before, but looks can be deceiving anyway -- so who cares? Not to be outdone by the console itself, the system's AC adapter has also dropped from 350 to 250 grams. You can thank slimmed down production costs over time, and a reduction of parts for this amazing feat.

Both console and power supply are reporting to be quite satisfied with their results, and are eager to continue carrying the full load until their big brother can muster enough interest, and let them sail off into the sunset all poetic-like. Does anyone else see the potential for further price cuts here?

[Thanks Michelle, Bitfood, Via IGN]

We really should consider an intervention, it seems the PS2 has a serious problem.

I'm at my wits end. I was getting worried after she dropped so much weight with the slimline... and now this? Somebody stop her before she morphs into an iPod. Oh the horror!

Body beautiful...

Maybe the decreased materials and shipping costs will help recoup production losses for the PS3? Can't really think of any other logical reason, as it seems a bit late in the game for a move like this.

Standard console cycle. Price cut won't come until sales start to drop off a bit. In the meantime, the increased margin will help offset PS3 losses.

They should add a screen to it and call it PSP. :D

the R&D branch of Sony is incredible. think of this as an exercise to how much smaller they can make their machines. since the PS2 & PS3 share similar structures, it's not entirely unfeasible to develop ways to shrink down the PS3 using similar techniques.

Personally, I'll hold out for a PS3 and go backwards compatible before getting this, but still cool.

Assuming the software compatibility improves. The emulator is good, but some *major* PS2 titles still don't work.

Unrelated: I wonder if the XBox 360 would get any smaller when it is redesigned, seeing how people actually do buy faceplates for their consoles. An internal power supply would be nicer than a smaller case, IMO.

Two things:

It's tiny, but will it be $99 now?

And, s0lesuviv0r, I will kill a man to get my hands on the Genesis CDX. Yes, Kill a man.

Must have ...

The PS3 isn't the PS2's "big brother", it's more like the PS2's "crazy steroid-bulked uncle who everyone tells you is 'really smart' but still works at Wal-Mart".

It's not that amazing, we're talking about something released 7 years ago. Looks nice though, and nice to see Sony keeping up with things.

Ahh, the Genesis CDX. I have one - and yes, I used to use it as a portable cd player too, since I got it for very little at a garage sale and didn't want to buy another CD player. Thing never skipped :)
