One of my biggest concerns with Splinter Cell: Conviction is that it will be too much like prior installments, even though the goal seems to be making a brand new type of Splinter Cell game, or at the very least, an all-new Sam Fisher.

I realize such sentiment will anger fans of the series, but as a non-fan of the franchise, it's how I honestly feel. The closer we can get to Batman: Arkham Asylum in terms of combat -- probably the only stealth I've ever truly enjoyed -- the better.

In this behind-the-scenes video, we get to hear about how Sam is now faster, and more brutal when dealing with enemies. Since he's no longer taking orders from anyone, these changes had to be made. To me, it sounds like Ubisoft Montreal made the right choice in that regard.

If all else fails, you need to watch the video to hear scripted events director Sean Stanek say "Shit man, that's Sam Fisher in that booth!"

We'll see, I remain skeptical on this

So many people bitch and moan about the system that was setup in the original and passed to it's sequels. The way that if you're spotted you have to start from a checpoint and try again.

So my reply as a fan of this games series is this: How many classic games from the past did the EXACT same thing if you'd die?

I've made my case.

@crusnchill They changed that in Chaos Theory. You could get spotted more than three times and still play the mission, but it crippled your mission rating severely.

Anyway, I CANNOT wait for this game to come out. I've waited too long. xD

This might be a long post. I love Tomb Raider and Splinter Cell highly and just woke up so I might go on more deeply about this than I should.

The thing with the Splinter Cell series detractors that I usually hear is hating the trail and error of getting spotted and then memorizing it to get back the next time.
Uh, you're playing it wrong.

If you blaze through and then remember it the second time through, of course you won't enjoy it.
Splinter Cell has never been a run and gun. It's actually more of a puzzle game with human enemies as the pieces more than a shooter.
As any big fan of the series realized, if you play it like the stealth engine it was designed for, you won't even have to fire a shot (at least in the past, that seems impossible with the new game from what is shown).
But Splinter Cell had a unique gameplay compared to other games. If you want to run and gun, go play a game of that type, there's plenty to choose.
My only worry is, as I hold the Splinter series up there as one of my favorite series because I like the patient slow pace of it's structure, is they will make it too much of an action based game where it becomes....just another action title.

Heck, you want a more action heavy and dumbed down and forgiving version of stealth, go play Assassins Creed or Uncharted. But why turn Splinter Cell into a gun version of Assassins Creed instead of letting each title have it's own slight distinction in feel made for a slightly different audience?
Splinter Cell was never meant for the mainstream in the way of a Halo was. It was the hardcore stealth title, like Ninja Gaiden is the hardcore action title.

Speaking of which, it's kind of like if Ninja Gaiden is too hard for an action fan, go play Wet, which is easier for more people to enjoy (and there's nothing wrong with that). But you don't dumb down Gaiden in response!
When you follow those rules, obviously most times the motivation being to up sales despite having a series already selling well, you would end up with so many games aping each other so often that every game is the same with only different graphics.
And in many titles, we're already getting there.
So far, I have faith and a reserve on this new Splinter Cell and give them the benefit of the doubt given their history with the series that they know what they're doing, no matter how dangerously close this is appearing to be a third person viewed Rainbow 6 (Which again, if I wanted a Rainbow 6 type experience, I'll go play Rainbow 6).

But I also keep having Resident Evil 5 pop up in my head. I mean, I really enjoy that game, but it's not Resident Evil in gameplay. It's more Gears Of War with some Resident Evil movements left over.
Great game on it's own...yet the more adventuring styles of old had more distinction to other games out there. Though God no, don't ever go back to the camera of old.

Here's my plead if someone from the developers reads here:
Pleeeeaaase, Ubi, as someone who has bought, not rented but bought, the whole series on day one....change is good for the sake of evolving, just please don't make this into Sam Fisher: Arkham Asylum. I already have a Batman I can go play.
What makes the series great is that it plays different from other titles. That's a positive mark, not a negative. Don't read too much online posts to think that's what everyone wants. Keep the perspective that, purely off my gut, I'd bet most posters either rent or buy old 90 percent of the time.
Don't ditch your cash cow. I buy.

One of my friends work on that game, and by the way he talks about it, I have no doubt this is going to be one of the best 2010 games

As another day-one-entire-Splinter Cell-buyer-and-lover, I think this is a great move for the series...It was starting to get a little stale.

After Metal Gear Solid on the Playstation ONE, we expected better than that. Oh and the first and second Tenchu games as well. Classics can get away with it, but once innovation happens, the whole "I see you, you start over" gameplay is considered a flaw. P.S. also Hitman.

P.P.S.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand Metal Gear back in 1988 didn't have that mechanic.

The game looks amazing!

One one fear?

That they make the game too easy. The last dev walkthrough showed Sam clearing out every room with the 'Mark and Execute' feature.
Obviously the developers are not going to show Sam dying... but Ubisoft have had a habit recently (Prince of Persia) of making their games more accessible to the casual market and, in turn, making them too easy.

I like this, but I wish people stop saying it's too easy. I bet you £50 there's going to be achievements or a score where you have to play the game without killing people (just like Chaos Theory and Double Agent). They're showing all the action to get a new audience interested, but I'm sure there's plenty of stealth approaches that we haven't seen yet. Anyway, I'm glad it's moving on with the gameplay. I just wish more of Splinter Cell's fans would do the same.

Michael Ironside has the best voice... they made an inspired decision when they chose him back for the first Splinter Cell. The whole stealth aspect aside, I think it's commendable that they're trying to make close quarter combat mesh seamlessly with gunplay. I can't think of a game that has done it well. The Bourne Conspiracy was fun, but a little repetitive. I'd like to see comprehensive takedowns in SCC that don't rely on me building up a meter, just pure button mashing skill.

Can't wait for this game. Batman was fun and all but Sam Fisher vs. Batman would be a sick matchup.

My friend was actually a Krav Maga master. His arms were massive. He started to teach me some techniques, but my friends lack of understanding made him really mad. He nearly killed my other friend with a kick when he backed off on holding the sparing bag.
