The Limited Edition Simpsons Xbox 360

Had it not come from Microsoft's PR agency, I'd think it was a photoshop job. The Simpsons Xbox is very real, folks. Oddly enough, today's announcement of the rare limited edition console has absolutely nothing to do with the upcoming game we featured yesterday. Instead, this block of cheese simply features the movie logo and Homey's gigantic forehead. From the press release:

The Simpsons" will take Xbox 360 by storm later this summer in advance of the famous Springfield family's big-screen debut on July 27, 2007. Xbox 360 is partnering with FOX to help promote "The Simpsons Movie," offering fans the chance to get their hands on one of 100 limited-edition "Simpsons" Xbox 360 Pro (20GB!!!) consoles through a series of special events and promotions.

I must admit, the "Homer Xbox's" shade of shock yellow doesn't look that bad to me -- and looks quite spiffy on the controller. Almost edible. Say it: I am a banana!

Another perspective just hit my inbox from Tempus: "Why must we be forcefed multiple consoles. Core. Premium. Elite. Simpsons. It doesn't quite fit. M$ are selling out with this!" What do you think?

[Update: crazy high-res version attached.]

@ Tempus's other perspective: It's not like Japan doesn't get a million special limited versions of every console ever made. I don't see why, when America finally gets a few limited edition versions, it has to be seen as "selling out." I, for one, wish more of these special editions would come out.

Makes me want something with Mustard. Hahahaha. Cool nonetheless, though I doubt I'd ever want to sport it. :P

My point is that it is Microsoft who have done this. Granted, had Nintendo done a similar stunt, more people would have been at ease with that due to their multiple coloured product ranges over the last ten years.

Here's how I see it;

Nintendo release different coloured consoled in order to meet customer demand and give consumers a product that feels more "personal" to them.

Microsoft release different consoles as and when technology changes (over 18 months... gawd I hope 1337 360 isn't a sign of things to come in this business) and now Microsoft have signed an agreement with Hollywood in order to promote the Simpsons movie.

Nintendo do it for the right reasons. Microshaft are getting publicity whilst plugging Fox. That is all.

Don't really mind the yellow per-say but the Simpsons branding instantly makes it...

oh, lets consult the thesaurus for a replacement to the obvious term, "lame"...

hmmm... no really exotic words here so I'll go with, "unpleasing".

Umm... EA pays their employees pretty well. They've made a lot of a changes since the overtime scandal from a few years back.

@ Tempus: But what about Nintendo of Japan's numerous game/license specific consoles? The Char Anzable (Gundam) Gamecube? The Final Fantasy DS Lite? The Spongebob GBA? Nintendo has done it for "the wrong reason" as well. Heck, keep in mind that they usually have some product to go along with those releases, so they stand to make more money if the in-product advertising works and the consumer buys the advertised product.

@ Necros - the difference is that for the most part, Nintendo's console variations and themes are to tie in with game franchises. Microsoft have tied their console to a movie. Now that's selling out. Nintendo were advertising within their industry, promoting the games. Yes it could be considered selling out but now we've got a software/hardware company sponsoring movies and giving consoles away in an attempt to make everyone think "Ooo M$ are really rather nice to us" (Which they are for the most part but that's another story for a rainy day)...

This is just as bad as the spider-man spaghetti you get in stores.
