There was a statistic posted on Dtoid a few days back saying that something like 70% or more of 3DS owners had purchased this game? They just don't have a lot of options right now. The early adopters of the 3DS were starving for content and this is the first they've gotten.
Nothing wrong with the 3DS, nothing wrong with the OoT remake. Not saying that. Just... putting things in perspective.
No, you really can't... the fantastic new controls, upgraded textures, mirrored Master Quest, outstanding 3D visuals, boss gauntlet mode... All these are things you can't get on any of those other platforms. This truly is the best version of OoT. Hands down.
Honestly, some of the HD packs for emulators look better than this. But that's nitpicking, it is better on the 3DS overall.
That's very true! I have to think, though, if those (mostly) aesthetic changes are worth almost 300 dollars. Which actually they are except I don't have 300 dollars to spend on it!
And I think people would have bought Zelda OoT 3ds even if there were 20 other great games. Its a big name.
It's going to be interesting to keep a watch on the OoT numbers going forward, to see if it helps drive new hardware purchases, and if people who buy into the 3DS later pick it up new.
Just to place things in proper perspective, though, just know that Zumba Fitness spanked Zelda last week to take back the number one spot, and will likely continue increasing the spread. Just think about that!
Its a remaster. Halo Anniversary, MGS Twin Snakes, etc are remakes.
This is the same as the PS3 collections only with one game and not not 2-3, unfortunatley for the same price too.
There's some truth to your statement, but this is Ocarina of Time the legacy and fanfare to this game is gigantic. Even if this was released 3 years into the 3DS lifespan it would still be selling great if not better considering how much larger the install base would be.
According to Wikipedia as of December 2010 Game Rankings and Metacritic both rank the original Nintendo 64 version as the highest-reviewed game of all time, with average scores of 97.48% from Game Rankings and 99/100 from Metacritic.
I never played this game before (didn't have an N64) The reason I got it was because I wanted to see if it was worthy of all the praise. Honestly I wasn't expecting much because alot of times when I play old games I'm a little disappointed, but this game is without a doubt amazing, I'm really surprised at how well it's held up. 13 years of innovation have passed, and in that time gaming has made enormous leaps forward. Unfortunately games don't always age well, there's some games I really enjoyed that are only half as old, that by today's standards aren't as good I remember them to be.
This game really is something special, and anyone who is denying that is just being cynical because of its popularity. I really am surprised at how fantastic this game is, I've played Okami & Wind Waker even the original NES Zelda before so this style of gameplay is nothing new.
Sorry if that came off as a little bit ranty, I generally like your input and agree with alot of the things you say. I don't think you we're trying to knock down the game or anything I was just trying to point out how the sales to this game are due to how often this game gets praised. I'm pretty sure everyone has seen OoT on so many list of greatest games of all that it gets a little irritating how frequent it's at number 1, but the game does deserve it. This is a wonderful remastering of one the most beloved games of all time, the reason it's selling so well is because many people are eager to relive the experience and others want to see what all the commotion is about. Sure some may be more drawn to it on account that it's the best game on the system, but even if there were 20 other great games available it would still be doing remarkably well.
I guess I'll just never understand this bizarre mentality where people think 3DS only has to play 3DS games and they're cranky they can't play consumer whore every week with it.
I got four 3DS games and a zizeable DS backlog to work with on top of the DSiWare and VC games. I'm just not short on things to do here.
You are 100% right.
I'm a veteran OoT lover player, in contrast you are one of the lucky ones who recently got to experience the game for the magical 1st time this year.
I have replayed OoT (original and ports) quite a few times over the years. It doesn't show age in gameplay. It's graphics are of the near highest quality for an N64, and the art direction is what sticks. I believe people like to say some parts of the game are dated just to search for something imperfect that might go hand-in-hand with a 13 year old game. The overall design still bests every other action-adventure game out there to this day. And Action-adventure is my favorite genre so I can definitely compare.
Ocarina is one of the most emotional journeys in gaming and everything about is sentimental from the music to the locations to the rewarding puzzles and finally the brilliant ending. It sells well once again, not just because it has so much soul, but because it is one of the greatest experiences in life.
You're both absolutely right. No "Best Games Ever Made" list would be completely without Ocarina of Time. There's really no arguing that. And Scissors is right in that sales figures would be even higher if the 3DS install base were larger.
However, the figure I'm pointing to is the percentage of the install base that bought this game. Here's the link to the article I mentioned...
http://www.destructoid.com/ocarina-of-time-3d-sold-to-20-of-3ds-owners-204708.phtml
So as you can see, it was 20% of the install base. Massive oops on my part, 70% was clearly a stupid number and I suck. Point is, that's a HUGE percentage when you think about it. Can you even begin to imagine a game on another system selling like that?
Think of it this way. The Xbox 360 has sold 55 million units, according to wikipedia. Lets say for argument's sake that Portal 2 is the best game on the platform (it is, btw). To have sold, based on percentages, as well as Ocarina of Time, Portal 2 would need to sell 11 million copies. 11 MILLION COPIES. And that's just on one console. In reality, Portal 2 has sold 3 million copies at retail (not including digital sales).
What can we learn from this? Well, is OoT a better game than Portal 2? Arguably, yes. Is it WAY THE HELL better than Portal 2 as the sales by percentage of install base would suggest? No. It's not. So what's making up the difference? The answer to that question is, I think, pretty clear, and simply indicative of the state of the 3DS at the current moment.
None of this is surprising as Captain Reggie himself admitted that the system launched with too little software support. This is just a good numerical way of quantifying the problem as it stands.
Yeah but it's a game in desperate need of an upgrade. I suggest adding a second tier & giving the pawns jetpacks.
That would make it worth owning a second Chess board for me. But then again, I'm afraid of grabbing three friends and throwing down in one of those four-player Chess games they sell. Because I'd be walking out of that game night with three less friends.
Yeah, chess really add something to bring in the younger gamer. Strategy isn't really contemporary...
Well I was going to say that but you said it first ^^
Not to knock on OoT or anything because it is a solid game but they really should be trying to get as much quality NEW content as they can for their NEW system.
I'm with you there, but it's Ocarina of Time. If you have a 3DS and love Zelda, you're an idiot for not buying it. The subtle improvements made to graphic and the dramatic improvements to inventory make it the definitive version, even if you still love the 64 classic.
So ghey.
Suppose the fact that no other games worth buying have been released in the last month or so, and won't be for the next few weeks.
In the Summer drought, even Link can be King.
Majora's has some of the most compelling stories in the entire Zelda franchise, along with a unique take on gameplay and a persistent world. It's a rare gem within the gaming world and is hugely entertaining, challenging and rewarding.
@Tristrix retort: Double bingo.
Both bingo'ed.
@Sexual Chocolate: Ghey? Really? I tend to try and keep things classy, but you're a moron. A narrow minded, fanboyish moron that fails to recognize the greatness of a widely acclaimed series for all the right reasons. Unless you're not refering to the series as "ghey". In that case, I stand corrected, lower my head, offer my hand and apologize.
People have fond memories of the game, and wanted to experience it once again.
I'm sure the Halo CE remake will sell well and the inevitable remake of FF7 will probably be huge unless square fucks it up.
I also liked Majora's Mask best, it is unique to this date. OOT was just more of the same, good stuff but it didn't blow your socks of if you played A Link to the Past before.
But still, looking back I like the 2 N64, the NES and the first GB one the most out of all the Zeldas. The new ones are just more of the same and couldn't bring anything really gamechanging to the table and sadly often lack the atmosphere the old ones had.
Also apparently some people here think that sales say something about the quality of things. This is completely fallacious, and I'm sure if you tried hard enough you could come up with countless counter examples of things which sold great and are not 'good'
Just because Ocarina of Time sells good, doesn't mean anything about whether its a good game or not.
