The Last Story may be Sakaguchi's final game photo

Final Fantasy creator, Mistwalker head and RPG legend Hironobu Sakaguchi has stated that he may very well be retiring from the scene after The Last Story. Pay close attention to this Wii exclusive, as it could be an icon's swan song.

"This is a title that myself and the development staff are putting 120% of our energy into," says Sakaguchi. "I'm fully pouring everything into this one title, and the feeling of it maybe being my last title is strong."

Speaking as a fan of Mistwalker, this is pretty big news, and it makes The Last Story even more interesting. This RPG is definitely in my top five most wanted Wii games right now, and I really hope that, if this is going to be Sakaguchi's last, that he goes out with a bang.

Of course, Sakaguchi had also planned to retire after the first Final Fantasy, and we all saw how he stuck to his guns there.

I really hope this isn't some marketing scheme to generate interest, because its working! It does make sense that it would be called "The Last Story" then but I'm not holding my breath.

That's sad if it's true. Love everything he makes. I even enjoyed playing Blue Dragon. It would be cool if he somehow patched things up with Square and made his last game a Final Fantasy game.

Well, to be honest...Final Fantasy was supposed to be FINAL. It just ended up being a surprise hit and saving the company.

Anyway...I liked Blue Dragon, but it was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too easy. And I adored Lost Odyssey. If this is even 3/4 as good as Lost Odyssey, it'll be one hell of a swan song.

But...that's what he said about FINAL FANTASY! And look what happened!

Anyone else notice that "Last Story" and "Final Fantasy" are essentially the same meaning for a two-worded title, but changed up with the magic of synonyms?

Yeah, I didn't either.

All of what was then just squaresoft was ready o close up shop. Final fantasy was to be their last game, expecting it to sell poorly as the studio was essentially out of money

sofik you dont know shit about our (greek) retirement plan so please stop talking when you have your facts wrong. we have 65 as the least possible age anyone can retire, and a minimum of 40 years of work is also in effect, so yeah. stop your whining. and our debts are from the EU's NATO's exploitments of our needs and of the banker's and "analysts'" economic attacks against our country. open your mind, its not the people, its the fucking oligarchy that is running us,so please receive a royal fuck you from me, a greek guy who greedily eats your taxes and farts money

OK, back up a second before people start getting into an uproar. This retirement and his "first planned retirement" after Final Fantasy I are two very different things. With Final Fantasy, Sakaguchi was worried his retirement would be forced because Square's finances were so bad due to a string of flops. If Final Fantasy didn't do well, the company was going to go under and Sakaguchi wouldn't have a job any more.

This is a bit different. As far as I know, while Mistwalker hasn't had a smash hit (even with the incredible Lost Odyssey), it's not in any sort of financial danger. This sounds more like a planned retirement than a forced one, so you can't really compare it to what happened with a Final Fantasy.

However, I will agree that even if Sakaguchi does retire (and it will be a sad day when he does), it probably won't be the last we see of him. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up freelancing and contracting part-time on projects in the industry.

@sofik88 stop writing stupid words. I want to see you living in Greek, working your ass off and gettin 400€ paid for it. If u don't want to work 'till your death, then stop earlier. Its that simple...

Of he does retire from this, no one better make a sequel. I'm now far more interested in this game, even if that was the point. This guy is legendary and if he goes, then it best be as good as it can get.

It would suck if the game was called "The First Story". Then he couldn't retire.

yeah that last line was a bit weird. he made Final Fantasy as his last project since he didn't have any planned finances for another

I think this means he's probably gonna have a produce role instead of as an active designer. I highly doubt he's going in to full retirement at 47.

Yep sofik, this isn't the best situation at all, that you are living in, but jeleousy will change nothing. Wouldn't you retire with 47 (or even earlier) if you had the chance. Ask yourself. BTW, I want this game!

Well, the reason he planned to retire after FF1 was because of Square's economy. They had only money and resources enough for one last game, after several games with failing sales numbers. Fortunately they made surprising amount of money and success after FF1, so he continued, because they could.
This time it seems different though...

valouris is right. The Greek bailout isn't a bailout of Greece. It's a bailout of Greece's creditors. A bailout of Greece would wipe all of that debt out and recapitalise their banks. It would be helpful to Greece, in the long run. What this is doing is making sure Greece keeps paying back their loans, mired in debt that wasn't of the citizens' doing, particularly.

You've got five most wanted Wii games, Jim? The gameplay in this one doesn't look that great. I'd much rather have had Lost Odyssey 2.

This better not be part of the hype automobile. If this is true and if he does retire after this, I'm taking every single game that he's made, find his retiring spot, then promptly splurge all over them, all the while he watches from his tied-up disposition.
