Final Fantasy creator, Mistwalker head and RPG legend Hironobu Sakaguchi has stated that he may very well be retiring from the scene after The Last Story. Pay close attention to this Wii exclusive, as it could be an icon's swan song.
"This is a title that myself and the development staff are putting 120% of our energy into," says Sakaguchi. "I'm fully pouring everything into this one title, and the feeling of it maybe being my last title is strong."
Speaking as a fan of Mistwalker, this is pretty big news, and it makes The Last Story even more interesting. This RPG is definitely in my top five most wanted Wii games right now, and I really hope that, if this is going to be Sakaguchi's last, that he goes out with a bang.
Of course, Sakaguchi had also planned to retire after the first Final Fantasy, and we all saw how he stuck to his guns there.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Anyway...I liked Blue Dragon, but it was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too easy. And I adored Lost Odyssey. If this is even 3/4 as good as Lost Odyssey, it'll be one hell of a swan song.
Yeah, I didn't either.
This is a bit different. As far as I know, while Mistwalker hasn't had a smash hit (even with the incredible Lost Odyssey), it's not in any sort of financial danger. This sounds more like a planned retirement than a forced one, so you can't really compare it to what happened with a Final Fantasy.
However, I will agree that even if Sakaguchi does retire (and it will be a sad day when he does), it probably won't be the last we see of him. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up freelancing and contracting part-time on projects in the industry.
I think this means he's probably gonna have a produce role instead of as an active designer. I highly doubt he's going in to full retirement at 47.
No.
This time it seems different though...

I'm finally going to have to retire my slim and ridiculous hopes of Project Dream getting back together to work on a new Chrono game. At least he looks to be going out with a bang, I can't wait for this game.
soo, that'd be pretty funny if he made a Last Story 2.. then 3..4..5.. and so on.
