Motion driven QTEs at least feel a bit more involving than tapping a button. Feels good to set up a suplex or lop off someone's head with that setup. Very cathartic.
I don't see why The Last Story would even bother with motion controls or why that would be great news since its an RPG. RPGs don't really lend well to motion control in the first place.
But whatever makes people who spaz about motion controls happy, I guess.
If i look at her bare back I'm thinking of something entirely different. I'm not going to to elaborate on that here though, it's not safe for the ears of the kiddies, this a newspost about a Wii game after all...
Let the self-loathing/flagellation party begin.
Honestly every game should be multiplatform, it's like if you needed 3 different Blu-ray players in your home to play disks from different vendors...
Why does it make sense to put a game on a system where motion controls are its biggest advantage only to ignore that very advantage? (re: putting games like Monster Hunter on Wii)
To me, the Wii's biggest advantage is its low development costs. If the Wii wasn't so cheap to develop for, there's no way we'd have The Last Story, or any of the games I mentioned earlier in this post (other than Smash Bros.). They'd all be "too niche" to risk a PS3/360 game's budget on, but too expensive to develop for XBLA/PSN.
The Wii's second biggest advantage is its huge install base. There are about twice as many Wii's out there are PS3s or 360s, and it costs a fourth or a fifth to develop for the thing. That means that sdds are on the Wii if you're hoping to at least make your money back on a new game.
It's a similar thing with the DS. The touch screen may be the feature that got a lot of people to buy one in the first place, but the reason 3rd parties support the DS is because 1) everyone has one, and 1) it's cheaper to develop for than the PSP.
So yeah, the Wii's motion controls were once a major selling point, and I'm sure they're still important to the non-gamer crowd, but from where I stand, they were never much of an "advantage" for traditional game developers or self-identified gamers.
From a fiscal standpoint, it certainly makes sense to put experimental games with smaller budgets on Wii. However I was looking at the capabilities of the system more from a raw design standpoint, rather than a businesses perspective. Ultimately, I think you may be right. While its very romantic to think that games should always fit their platform regardless of cost, it's not realistic.
To play devil's advocate, wouldn't a platform like PSN or XBLA be a more appropriate for low budget games than the Wii? The strength of those platforms is to push games with off-color/risky experiences. Although, I'll freely admit that a game with the scope of TLS would be a tough proposition as a downloadable title, particularly regarding pricing.
You could make an argument for The Last Story being a better fit for the PSP, at least in Japan, but given how Japanese gamers seem less and less likely to give new IP a try, I'm not even sure about that. It seems like Japanese gamers will only give new IP a try if the game plays like exactly like something they're extremely familiar with (like God Eater plays like Monster Hunter) but even that can be a real tough sell. And in the US and Europe, the PSP is pretty much a non-entity at this point, so don't count on any sales outside of Japan.
So yeah, that's more or less why I think Mistwalker knows what they're doing by putting The Last Story on the Wii. Hopefully in the future, games of this nature will have more of a home on XBLA/PSN as well. It sucks that so many people are going to miss out promising games The Last Story, and a lot of great, SD-budget games, just because they don't want to buy a Wii.
Belly dancing, playing maraccas/jingle bells, tempting beggars into doing one's bidding with a cluched fist full of what could be gold coins or other bits of metal (even ammunition),shaking spears at people, shaking people down for loot (literally!),knocking down temple pillars with one's bare hands, disciplining unruly pets/children for NPCs,agitating hornets/bees in nests before tossing it at enemy mobs, preparing volatile contents under pressure to detonate, sprinkling pixie dust hither and yon and making medieval milkshakes...and that's just for starters! Some people have no sense of imagination.
As long as The Last Story has pointer controls (and a Western Release),it won't be a total loss.
