Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Post Dragon Age, Devs: "We regret to inform you that due to our artistic integrity at stake, we chose to keep our creations (especially our most chaste and treasured character, Morrigan) fully clothed, so that it did not detract from the serious storytelling and morality mechanics we created".
Yea, the PR/Ad Campaign was fairly terrible.
And I guess we're not motherfking ready.
Mass Effect didn't shy away from showing that blue chick's tushie during the sex scene and it was not rated AO. Does the ESRB have some kind of rule that says "you can only show a butt during a sex scene if it's painted blue"?
Agree. They're gross and seem like a really awkward imitation of what a bunch of virgins think sex might be like, when they come together and talk about what they've seen in R-Rated movies.
...
Thank god I am on PC and we get mods... as soon as a decent one comes out I am getting at least topless sex scenes, if not the whole shebang. It kind of looks awkward either way I am sure, but at least one of them is slightly realistic.
If these guys are serious about helping the medium "mature" in these areas, they need to work on making the subject believable in the first place. Otherwise it's pretty much just furthering the notion that it simply cannot be done within the context of a videogame.
On the other hand, if Naughty Dog were to attempt it I'm sure they'd garner better results, seeing as their characters at least look half alive and can emote convincingly.
Let me just say that I wholeheartedly endorse this pc self-affirmation. Although from the looks of things, it probably won't look much better than the Witcher. But I swear to GOD if the ESRB gets it in their head to fuck with the rating retroactively because of nude mods like they did with Oblivion back in the day, I gotta say. I'm gonna be a little pissed.
No, get out of the mods directo- NO DON'T LOOK AT THAT
Also, the sex scenes in Origins are terrible. They should have just omitted them entirely. They don't even look human once they take their clothes off. Morrigan is mostly bare in her clothing, but once she takes it off, her shoulders and arms suddenly mutate into a man with bitch tits.
Keep in mind nudity and full frontal are not the same thing.
Mass Effect had nudity but the camera angles hid a lot. That was what we wanted to show.
Of course we're aware of the ESRB but honestly it has very little effect on our development. We do what we feel is artistically correct for each product.
I agree. People compare the situation to books and movies, but in my opinion that's a very unfavorable comparison for games. In movies, you're watching actual humans pretending, in books, it's up to your own imagination to visualize the scene. Games just throw awkwardly animated puppets onto the screen, and insist on being taken seriously. Sure, I take that as seriously as the sex scenes in Team America: World Police.
I'd much rather not have them at all, than have them done this poorly. Maybe an implied scene would be more effective for what the developers are trying to convey?
i know im a nerd perv
It was just clever marketting though, same with the "New Shit" soundtrack to the trailers. Making it appeal to more than just the people who would buy it anyway.
Even if that involves tits.
But yeah, I still need to finish this game.
I mean, if we're striving for an artistic representation of what happens when adults fall in love and physically show that for one another, how does wearing underwear and a bra fit in?
I'm sorry Christina, but I'm not buying it. The excuse, that is, not the game...which I did buy and I love. :) To me, it's not a big deal. It's just like, why include it if it is going to take you completely out of the experience by being so awkward and self-aware of the need NOT to show anything? Like others mentioned, it doesn't fit in with a game where you run around with blood all over you from the dozens of creatures and people you just slaughtered...nor does it fit in with Morrigan's character in particular. If it's going to be that way, why not just skip it altogether? I don't see how that could be an artistic choice, and the only logical reasoning was that it was ESRB concerns-related.
I agree with the others. Until games can take themselves seriously enough to treat the situation appropriately and treat gamers like adults, why include these types of scenes at all? It's just a visual reminder that games are still not treated like other artistic mediums are, and is about the polar opposite of immersive. Honestly, it was more funny than anything.
That said, I'm going to create a female rouge next and go after Liliana.
My guess is that the campfire screw scenes looked EVEN WORSE with nipples and made people playing the game feel even more awkward and worried that someone would walk in, look at the screen, and sneer and ask "what the #@#$ are you watching? Lol!" than they did with the underwears.
And for the record one of the best movie directors of all time; Alfred Hitchcock knew that the 'theater of the mind' is better than anything he could show for certain parts of a film. You know why sex scenes look tacky and poorly done? Because they don't belong there, and when people try to put them in it always is strange.
Thank you Bioware for giving us a good story, not just some gimmicks.
There was nothing clever about the marketing campaign. It was trashy, and the Marketing Director even admitted that was part of the allure, and he hoped people would like it based on how bad it is.
But the thing is, Bioware is not a trashy company.
You would say that though. The game itself might have been targetted at you, but the adverts weren't. That was the genius behind it, to in a way "trick" more people into buying the game.
See, I thought about that.
I know the secret of marketing (hint, Brutal Legend - guard the truth of RTS), but even the target meat-head audiences didn't like the outdated Marlyn Manson songs, and stupid videos.
"You talk about us?"
"Well yeah. You stripped down to your wool posing pouch and ground into her like a horny dog with a leg while we were all standing right across from you by the fire, what did you think would happen?"
Just so you know, you could give most of the posters on this site 500 pounds and a blowjob and they'd still find something to complain about. This is a cool site, but it is absolutely brimming with some of the most self-important gamers you'll ever come across.
