The King of Kong review: Go see it, like, yesterday photo

Our beloved Tiff was kind enough to post the trailer for The King of Kong for us last month, and I've been patiently waiting ever since to see the full film in the theatre. What I was expecting was a light hearted tale about competitive arcade gaming. What took me by surprise was how affecting of a story it was. When you're laughing one moment and moved the next while watching a film, you know someone's done a good job. Add in that the film is about games, and my admiration of it soars even higher.

I only had the vaguest idea of who Billy Mitchell was before I had seen this film, but in case you don't know, he's like a hybrid of mullet toting proud American hick and Darth Vader. He also holds the top arcade score for Donkey Kong in the world (apparently it was increased by him recently, but it has not been offically approved yet). The story is about the duel between himself and Steve Wiebe, who currently holds the Guinness World Record for the high score.

Wiebe seemingly emerged from nowhere after losing a job and rigging up a Donkey Kong cabinet in his garage to perfect his game. In the long run he succeeded, and the story runs from there as he travels out to Hollywood, Florida to the legendary Fun Spot arcade to do it all live. To say that the story that naturally develops between Mitchell and Wiebe is fascinating hardly begins to cover it. The men are such complete opposites that the roles of light vs dark are inevitable.

Director Seth Gordon and Producer Ed Cunningham have done a clever and memorable job telling a hell of a story, making it well worth the ticket price. Some good PR chap made sure the theatre it premiered at in LA had a Donkey Kong cabinet in the lobby, and by the time I got back outside, it had gained a line of moviegoers waiting to insert their coins. Somehow it does my heart good to see the tradition of arcade gaming still thriving in the modern day, regardless of how advanced next-gen becomes. Now get out there and support flicks like this so we can keep arcades alive!

[Special note: Keep your eye open for special guests from The King of Kong on RetroforceGo! coming soon!]

Great write-up Colette. The King of Kong isn't being showed where I live so I will have to wait until I can see it.

P.S. May the arcade live forever!

I have been waiting anxiously for this film. Billy Mitchell is great example to all the cocky Halo "pros" what they will probably turn into later on in their lifetimes.

I hear the directors getting sued by a few people for how he's portrayed them in the film. Hopefully it'll get a UK release so I can see what the fuss is all about.

Colette, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I just had to create an account at Dtoid to correct all of the errors in your post (in descending order of importance):

1) Steve Wiebe, not Liebe. He even corrects people on his name on multiple occasions during the film.

2) Fun Spot is in New Hampshire, not Florida. Destructoid ran a story about Fun Spot about six posts ago.

3) Seth Gordon is the director, and Ed Cunningham is the producer. Close, though.

You're right though, King of Kong is awesome. I saw it twice before it officially debuted, and I'll probably see it a third time now that it's in its theatrical run. Right now it has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes... that's better than any movie currently in theaters.

On a side note, I actually met Steve Wiebe last week at the NYC premiere and got him to sign a Donkey Kong cartridge. Shockingly, he said that no one has ever asked him to sign one before.

I'm actually really excited to see this movie, and not so much just for the arcade concept but because of the story involved.

Psst... Billy was also the first person to ever get a perfect score in Pacman

@Twisted View - Well, thats what I get for writing a post at 2 in the morning. Thanks for the corrections. However, the film shows multiple times that the Fun Spot location is in Hollywood, Florida.

It has a 97%, but that is out of 32 reviews, other movies have about 130 reviews. And making an account simply to be a corrector of minor mistakes is ridiculous I hope you know.

I am in no way saying this film is bad, I have interest in seeing it, but saying it is better than say Ratatouille (which I believe is still in theaters) is ridiculous.

I'll see it. Is that all it is though? :l There's more to an arcade than a vintage 8-bit highscorer. I dunno I'd probably be more enthusiastic if he did both vintage AND modern arcade wonders. I saw a kid duelie the original House of the Dead on a dollar. The whole fucking game. A dollar.

Now would I want to make or see a movie about it? Hell no but you can put that in there, same thing with Street Fighter, the four player side screen X-Men Arcade, Guilty Gear, Elvis Pinball, DDR, Sega GT, like there's so much else out there. I dunno like I said I'll see it if I find it.
