I don't mind a serious story but I do mind the lack of ambition GTA IV had.
All I want from GTA5 is a return of all the cool stuff from SA that was striped away.
Running around with a dildo was available in SA, but out didn't mean the game had balls; it just meant it was getting too goofy.
Smashing people in the face with a floppy purple dildo isn't as fun when you're 'supposed' to do it.
Thanks,
The World.
And Jim, I totally agree with you, and though I'm not too much into Saints Row, I really love what Rockstar has done with GTA, and they really do compliment each other. People will complain, though.
So it goes.
Cliffy: No can't say I haven't.
JIM: Me either... he
It is like, go to any Saints Row board and there is always someone bashing Saints Row with GTA and all that crud. But their loss, as you said there Jim, those of us who enjoy and want both, we win twice.
When I poked it, it popped right back into place.
I didnt mind the more serious story of GTA4 and would actual like it to go even further in this direction
That being said the biggest flaw of GTA4 was it didnt have enough toys in the sandbox so that ever fresh feeling GTA has always been known for felt faded
Oh, and not only did I finish the game, I 100%ed it. A friend of mine did the same, and out of about five others only one didn't finish. Sounds like you have shitty friends.
On topic though, I'm right there with you.
I may not say that both GTA and SR are actual complements with each other. There are gamers who would rather take GTA over SR and vice versa for the very reasons you stated. However, gamers who don't care and would rather have both may see them as complements then. And those reasons why someone would prefer GTA or SR are the very reasons these games are different.
When you strip both games down to their very core, then you'll have the typical third-person sandbox game. If at that point is where we judge a game, then yes SR and GTA are both the same game. But has that stopped other games from being created that are identical to others at the core? No. Building up on that core adding features, and mechanics for the player helps give the game identity from the other games that sit right next to them. Rockstar and Volition handle both of their games in their own way, and this helps create two typical sandbox games different from each other.
That is of course the way I see games when it comes to "copying" and "knock-offs."
I disagree. I feel that Grand Theft Auto IV tried to have a mature story, but the bipolar direction it took (a serious story in a world of satire) didn't work. It was like putting Michael Corleone in Toon Town: it was off-putting, distracting, and in the end, you couldn't fully enjoy either aspect. Rockstar wants to give me a mature story? Great! Just insert the mature tone and smart writing of games like Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire instead of the saddening lowest common denominator jokes like those of GTAIV.
It seems to me that the clever writing that Rockstar had in Vice City and San Andreas was missing in GTAIV, but I think that's because of James Worrall's departure as co-writer of the series. Also, I feel that Saints Row 2 was, overall, better written than GTAIV.
@Naturality nailed it on the head (no pun intended). It's no fun to do zany stuff when the game is basically MAKING you do zany stuff. There will probably be a mission in Saints Row The Third where the only weapon you have is a floppy purple dildo. That will take all the fun out of using it. Saints Row makes being deprived seem too contrived.
When one wants a game that lets one violate the laws of civilized society as well as the laws of physics and common sense, there is the Saint's Row series.
Besides, GTA has floppy dicks on display, ones not hidden behind mosaic filters, either.
BUT - Nico Bellic has a compelling backstory and could be insightful at time. "War is when the young and stupid are tricked by the old and bitter into killing each other."
It also felt like Nico did not achieve the level of badassery I would have liked. Like, that big Russian mob boss still lives.
I will not waste my time explaining all the details why, just wanna agree with Jim. I love the fact that SR and GTA go different directions cause both things are great, if one of the games would try to do both, it would suck.
Will play both games.
Even though I read the review, it still didn't prepare me for seeing that baby in action...
Meh... it's likely that this game will have the same shitty driving and shooting mechanics as their other games. Still, I agree that it's nice to see some decent narrative in these games - there certainly are other games with no plot where people can simply wreak mindless havoc
Dick. :-)
And yes, I dislike franchises that takes a complete 180 in terms of gameplay. I want my games to be fun to play and not watch an emotional story of an immigrant who just wants to do the "right" thing. At least not when it's the cause to ditch everything else.
Saints Row on the other hand. I completely dislike the graphics. They are not bad from a technical standpoint but artistic wise it's so fucking boring to look at and explore. That wasn't the case in any GTA. I don't exactly know which target audience Saint Row has, maybe younger players, but running around with a giant dildo is absolutely no fun in my opinion. Maybe Saints Row 3 will have better gameplay but SR2 was just utterly garbage, buggy and bad to control.
There you have it. Thanks god for meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.......
Which is what I’m hoping for.
I only found Saints Row 2 about 4 months ago and I FUCKING loved it. Cannot wait for Saints 3.
Both games I will without doubt be getting, they are both sandbox but so so so different!
