The industry evolved itself right out of the good JRPG phase almost completely this gen. Remember that glorious 3-4 year span back in the mid to late 90s when Square could do absolutely no wrong, giving us a stable of RPG classics that stand to this day as some of the best examples of the genre? Those games are not contemporary.
If Square rolled over and died in 1999, it would have been a catastrophe. If they bit the dust today, I bet 80% of today's gamers wouldn't even notice or care. Square Enix is not contemporary.
the only game of theres that has a problem is versus
SE had eight releases in Q1 year. mostly divided between PSP and DS, And the honest truth is that the handheld market is THE market in Japan, and Japan tends to be their first priority 99.9% of the time. I imagine SE is pulling their hair out just to find a way to topple Monster Hunter there.
Also, they gave a pretty up-front preview of FFXIII-2 in Game Informer last month, forgoing the usual Famitsu drip-feed for something more substantial worldwide.
Still, I find it strange to complain about games that aren't out yet when you have dozens of games that come out each week these days and honestly more than anyone could hepe to keep up with.
Maybe SE should just do what Nintendo does these days - have a game in development for years and then announce it. That way things like Luigi's Mansion 2 come off as a total surprise and there's not that much of a wait for such games to happen.
What games besides Versus have we been waiting a long time for(thats been announced) Type Zero is coming out this year so thats all of that spiritual series excepting Versus. Almost every title they announce comes out the next year.
This was actually pretty decent though and not blind hate like I was expecting. I'm pleasantly surprised Jim :p
And the whole SE is out dated thing is ridiculous imo. Jrpgs were cool for a very brief period of time but now their not. So people who played the PS1 games like to take a dump on them when they were never fans of the genre to begin with.
They have the fucking audacity to announce AND release FFXIII-2 before it finishes Versus or that other damn game. Any form of sensibility they had as a company has long since been lost.
Well it uses a all new engine and has controllable cutscenes so that takes a long time.
Its the same thing as FFX-2 which came out right after X. 12 didn't come for many years after that.
And if you gave a fuck to finish that game, it wouldn't be a spoiler. Genius.
It does?! I'm at least 10 hours in the game (though I've been on a hiatus of the game for two months). Thank Jebus I have a short attention span or I would have been looking at the video.
@seamonkey420
I understand a lot of people like FFVII, but why keep asking for a remake? I'd rather Square work on something new than a game that most people who care about it own it. If you love the game so much, then the graphics shouldn't matter, and people will just complain about the differences like they did with MGS Twin Snakes, and if they don't change anything asides from the graphics then what's the point.
Besides getting that valuable outsider's perspective from within another part of their own company that would help their games sell better in the international marketplace, it could mean taking a completely new approach to older IPs if need be.
Yes, that means a Golgo 13 styled Number 47 in HitMan or Lara Croft being added into the cast of a Final Fantasy game. Seeing as how Final Fantasy Versus XIII looks like a near future Earth with magic and monsters and the Tomb Raider series is pretty much nearer future Earth with magic and monsters, Lara would fit right in. Plus, she is practically a more British version of Tifa Lockheart, anyway.
square enix is the sexy lady. you are the fool waiting with your dick hanging out.
also, can you drop the "thank dog for me" thing and go back to hurling microphones?
1. he can only eat 3 regular sized meals a day.
2. every day that he doesn't perform some type of excercise a meal is deducted from the daily maximum of 3 meals.
Just thought I'd throw that out there. Also, he'd make a great Elvis.
;D
They haven't announced anything else that is heavily delayed, and the December release of XIII-2 should show that they already are doing what you asked Jim.
This would have been okay advice in 2008. They games are almost all done though. Type-0 is done, and all that's left is Versus XIII, which is going to move into the spotlight very soon. Theatrhythm has been in development for a while now since it was originally a DS game, but they held off on announcing it until it was almost ready.
Tomb Raider was mostly all a CG trailer at E3 this year, with less gameplay shown than Versus XIII showed. It didn't get any complaints though because it's not obviously Japanese so you guys didn't pick on it your usual hypocritical way. Need I remind you guys again that they showed nearly 7 minutes of gameplay?
The ironic part is that everyone is begging them to show something on Kingdom Hearts 3 even though it's not announced at all. Hypocrites.
Stop making games no one asked for. A rhythm based Final Fantasy? A sequel to one of the worst reviewed Final Fantasy games in the last fifteen years, but not a remake of one of the most iconic games in the franchise? Four different Kingdom Hearts games, one of which actually explains SOME of the plot (Birth by Sleep), but not a true sequel in over five years?
Fuck off, Square Enix. I don't mind if you guys publish other people's games, because chances are those games are better than what you're developing, but Jesus Fucking Christ on a cross, stop doing stupid shit!
"Stop making games no one asked for. "
fsm fucking forbid that they let artists create new things. What is this industry coming to?
