This has to do with you trying to take a swipe at all the people that now realize that you rate any mildly difficult game far lower than it should be and refuse to admit that you suck at the game, instead acting like it's the game's fault. Unfortunately, everyone still knows that is exactly how you play games so this rant is largely pointless.
Bragging about high scores and gaming ability, within reason, has always been a part of gaming culture. Have you ever been to an arcade? That's probably the thing I miss most about arcades, the atmosphere of friendly competition and boasting when people pull off cool shit. Games aren't for "nerds" like you say. People can brag about that kind of stuff and lots and LOTS of people seem to care, so you are not speaking for everyone. Have you ever watched Evo before? Lots of people seem to love watching people who are extremely good at games.
Vanquish was perfectly balanced. Kirby was far, far too easy - unfortunately decreasing my enjoyment of an otherwise amazing game. Demon's Souls was definitely hard, but it was hardly the soul-crushing, life-changing experience that nearly every reviewer made it out to be. Some of the articles coming out at the time, you would have thought that reviewers had a near death experience and re-evaluated their life while playing Demon's Souls. It just wasn't THAT hard.
In the end, the irony of you complaining about assholes is just funny.
People like you are beyond myopic. You isolate a small section of games I've rated poorly and use them to whitewash the entire situation. It's pathetic compartmentalizing on the most blatant level and it amazes me that you people constantly buy your own blinkered shit.
The thing I like about this video more than anything is that last line. Not because of the line in and of itself, but because of the sheer disgust with which it was said.
Also, I'm pretty sure the Sonic rape was supposed to induce revulsion, ration.
As a lot have said, there are two ways to approach this.
A) "Dude, I finally beat (insert game) on (hardest difficulty)." *intelligent discussion of tips/strats/etc. on how it was done follows*
OR
B) "Dude, you can't beat (insert game) on normal? I beat it on (hardest difficulty) in (plausible but embellished amount of hours). You must suck. Why do you suck at this game? Go kill yourself. Etc, etc, etc.
A is a decent fellow and a good member of the community.
B is a douche bucket who needs to be raped repeatedly by howler monkeys on acid.
Simple, see?
glad you finally pointed that out. Awesome vid.
Leaderboards are fun. I care. I am that type of guy.
Demon's Souls was easy ON THE FIRST PLAYTHROUGH ONLY. It requires timing and caution, something that games nowadays don't do for fear of being called boring and slow. You still have a lot of leeway to mess up. It just required a different mindset than most are used to.
My brother took 20 hours to realize that defensive was the way to go in that game. Before that he just kinda rushed in and tried to kill everything.
My friend took a mere 10 minutes to figure that out. Basic problem analysis and solution.
Everything else is difficult if you don't have that patience and cautiousness.
Also you sounded really off near the end. I don't think that was the tone you were going for. You sounded... childish. Could be my inner snob though.
You do everything you can to draw the criticism, so I don't know why you act so upset about it honestly. Licking Vanquish, fucking Sonic. You're putting up huge blinking lights begging people to keep talking about it, then seemingly getting frustrated when they do. Not sure what that's all about ...
I haven't played Splatterhouse yet, but from your review it didn't seem like it was a difficult game. You kind of described it as a relatively simple beat-em-up. How it can be considered a better action game than Vanquish and Castlevania is lost on me completely. It's not graphically, not musically, certainly not art design or character design, not the depth of the combat system ... not sure what it could be really, and same with Fist of the Northstar. The only thing that even makes sense is that you didn't like them because they were tough games, and they are tough games.
I haven't seen any other kind of logical explanation for why someone would rate them like you did. Bi-polar disorder maybe? How you can appreciate Demon's Souls and Bayonetta one day, then turn around and slam Vanquish and Castlevania the next day I will never know. Even if you thought Vanquish was too short and didn't have any power-ups I could see you giving it a 7 or something. Those are both slightly valid points that Bayonetta is better at doing. But your criticisms of it were just totally all over the place and made it seem like you didn't even know how to play it.
I'll continue to TRY to logically interpret your opinions and reviews so that maybe one day I can finally read them and predict some kind of slightly consistent pattern and get something from your reviews that might help me decide what games to purchase. You make it damn near impossible though.
I really hate elitist jackasses who think games are easy when they aren't, though I guess it is everyone's opinion. (Like I think SMT games aren't hard) Still, when someone says a game like VVVVVV or Super Meat Boy is easy I'm calling blasphemy straight away. Seriously, there are just some games out there you can't call easy without looking like a complete ass.
P.s. I am not awesome at games... I still get my butt handed to me by many games that others find easy. I am just methodical which makes some games much easier.
Other than that I think the Sonic raping part should be added to the intro.
@Zeevo: ... what the hell? I don't even know.
All I saw is that you hate walls of text, which makes sense considering your awful grammar, and your total lack of reading comprehension. I would hate walls of texts too, so I understand.
I have to say though that when someone pulls something so completely, totally, utterly unrelated to the conversation out, like your completely unprovoked and unproven accusation of racism (what the fuck? I'm still in shock) ... then maybe it's more projection on your part.
Go back to school for a few years and then read my post.
"You and Enzi feel attacked by the video, because Jim is describing you."
Not really. My whole point was that this was never even about people bragging about scores. Who on Earth would actually get super-offended by that anyway? It's totally childish.
This was about Jim wanting to pick a fight with people who think he reviews only easy games favorably. I'm definitely in that camp, and the video was clearly meant to try to discredit a view that I, and many others share. Why am I an asshole for responding? The entire video is a rant directed at people he disagrees with. A rant that is much more offensive than anything I have done, if you want to keep tabs on it and police people.
So basically what you're saying is "BAWWWWWWW, JIM DOESN'T LIKE WHAT I LIKE! STOP HATING THINGS I LIKE! I'M GOING TO WRITE A NOVEL SIZED POST TALKING ABOUT HOW MUCH JIM SUCKS CAUSE HE HATES WHAT I LIKE! BAWWWWWWWW!"
Seriously, why do you care what he thinks about games? He has a different opinion then you. Deal with it.
"The Jimquisition: Nobody cares how good you are at games"
Who is the "you" in this sentence? Presumably, it is people who like difficult games. Should I not respond then? Jim's ENTIRE rant is about his criticizing people who have different opinions than himself. That's the entire point.
So I write a few paragraphs and I'm "not dealing with it." But Jim fucks a Sonic doll and he's "dealing with it?"
And maybe you should try reading a novel sometime. It will probably do more to help your ADD than the Ritalin.
If you're dealing with it, then why are you responding to his video? You're getting into this argument about how he likes certain games that you don't like. How is that dealing with it? You sound like the type of person in high school who's all "I don't care about that person", then suddenly "Oh my god, that person is such an asshole!"
Also thank you for the advice, but I knew my ritalin wasn't working a long time ago. Though a bit advice for you: you don't need to write a thesis paper sized post to state your opinion; a few sentences will do. Now if you will excuse me I'm off to do something better with my time (goes off to read "Of Mice & Men" for the thousandth time).
Jimquisition is Jim picking an opinion that someone else has that he disagrees with, and then he videotapes himself freaking out about it for comedy. The entire nature of Jimquisition is based on confronting people that he disagrees with, rather than ignoring them like you advise. Take every single thing you keep asking me, and first you should ask it of Jim, since the article itself is apparently offending your sensibilities - and you would have to read the headline first before getting to the comments.
"If you're dealing with it, then why are you responding to his video?"
If he's dealing with it, then why is he even making a video?
"You're getting into this argument about how he likes certain games that you don't like."
He doesn't like how some people think, so he gets in an argument about it.
I often admire pro gamers - like people playing ogame in top20 or people in south korea who make a living from gaming.
gaming is a common free time killer you have to be really really good at it to gain the right to be proud of your gaming skills ^^.
Your problem seems to stem from a very black-and-white view of this industry, where games are easily separated into "hard" and "easy." You will never understand my reasoning if you continue to read into the reviews on such a vapid level.
Expecting me to love one hard game because I loved another hard game is inane and incredibly shallow. Every review explains perfectly well what I like and dislike about each game. I'm sorry that you want all reviews to be the same across the board and for reviewers to like the things you like, but we don't cater to that here.
There are so many sites out there that will uniformly rate highly all games that the common consensus deems "great." On Destructoid, we rate what WE deem to be great, not what commenters on NeoGAF think. I apologize for that, but that's what we do.
Because people care about their OWN progress, not other peoples'.
Nice try, kid.
