The Island of Rhodes reveals the God Of War 2 that could have been [Update] photo

Update: We were hoodwinked! The GameFAQs community figured out that clicking a sequence of greek letters that spelled "kratos" reveals instructions on how to unlock HD mode, and a new countown for what appears to be the official gradual announcement of God of War 3 inbound in two weeks. Kotaku has the scoop

After reading the boards and doing some poking around on various sites, it seems that by large, everyone was disappointed: TheeIslandofRhodes did not live up to the hype. What was worse is that the big countdown also failed to work last night, angering people that stayed up until midnight (it even jumped back 2 days momentarily!) while the few that did get in faced connection problems getting into the videos. Sorry, No God of War 3 announcement, no Hollywood movie details.

They probably weren't ready to serve the demand for the content, which is is typical when doing high-traffic video on the web. It's Victoria's Secret all over again! But I digress.

The site's redeeming qualities are commentaries by the game designers and director Cory Barlog, who confesses that the scope was far more ambitious than the game we played. Read on for things that could have been...

Among the many things said, here's the two that stung the most:

* Kratos was supposed to begin the level as a giant God; at the same size as the colossus for a huge opening fight that would have you destroy a giant city, but the art budget and time constraint (allegedly) prevented this. The David vs. Golliath sequence was supposed to kick in later into the fight where you lose your titan powers.

* When the decision was made to start Kratos small, he was supposed to be on a beach in Rhodes. In fact, large chunks of the Rhodes level were also cut out due to time/budget constraints. The lispy designers confess the crushing foot was supposed to come out of nowhere on the beach. They also wish the foot was covered in seaweed and drained water when it attacks the building since he's in the water

Production notes aside, there really isn't much here to see. However, I can't help but feel that the PlayStation 2 platform was not the ideal playground for some of their big ideas. You could hear how much more they wanted to put into GOW2 over and over on this site ... or take it as a mental teaser for God of War 3. Can't wait to see what this team can do when they go next-gen.

Final gripe: any viral site about God of War without Jaffe speaking off the cuff is bound to suck. It doesn't matter if he had little to do with the project and just goes on and on for hours about what he had for breakfast. We love that guy!

The PS2 is pretty much ancient at this point, as evidenced by how hard it is for it to run an ambitious game like Shadow of the Colossus. I'm still surprised it was able to handle FFXII so well, but SquareEnix seems to be good at bringing out the power in systems.

I dont know, I hate myself for saying this, but this game would have been IDEAL in the PS3, not only it would have shot down the whole "initial drought" thing, the game itself would have benefit greatly from it, ideas such as those are a breeze in the PS3 hardware, and some scenes would have looked way better. (like the scene where the horses pull the isles, I mean is exceptionally good, but the horses themselves look really polygonal and fake in the PS2)

Oh well, heres hoping for GOW 3 to include some of those ideas.

And yes still GOW 2 is a sure contender for game of the year, I have played both, GOW 2 is far better than 1 the level design and the story unfolding is just incredibly good in 2.

When I think about GOW 2 and other games that were made at the end of the system's lifespan like Shadow Of The Colossus as PS3 games I get goosebumps. The future of video games is so fucking exciting that I can barely contain myself

I would agree this was a let down. These are videos that could have been included on the extra DVD that came with the game.

didn't they pull the same thing in the first one, where they spent nearly the whole budget on the hydra battle in the beginning and then they had to scale down the other parts? thought they would have learned by now...

It was the same story with the original. None of the games have ever been what Jaffe and the rest of SCE Santa Monica wanted it to be.

Jaffe was too busy raiding the office kitchen for Cheetos.

He seems like a Cheeto whore to me. Like the fat kid in 1st grade that would share his Cheetos or Koala Yummies?

There is a second countdown, if you solve all the puzzles that are hidden. It is 11 days from today. They also tell you how to put the game into 640x448 mode. L1+L2+L3+[]+O on the SCEA legal screen. Hopefully this countdown is about something. There is a teaser image. all you can see is a "G" and below that "Ch"

Certainly hardware limits had their role in the cutting room, but I can't believe time and budget constraints were a critical negative factor for such a money-printing project. I would have given them all the money and time they needed.

Hmm. Don't think Duke Nukem Forever. Think a few months and a few bucks more. ;)

I don't think a beach and some dripping seaweed would have made God of War 2 much better. I know the devil's in the details and all, but seriously, the game was the tits as it was.

I just had a pretty sinister thought.

What about if Sony is secretly working on GOW 3 for the PS3 and its going to hit sometime THIS YEAR or early next? and thats what they are announcing?

Just imagine GOW 3 (or a PORT of GOW2.5) in the PS3 along with 300 in blu ray. that sounds as pretty nice xmas gift.

Of course is just wishful thinking but.. hey.. so it was GOW2 in HD.

In response to Niero's comment, I would have to agree. Many of the games at the end of the PS2's lifespan such as FF12, SotC, and GoW2 all looked amazing and played very well given the hardware. I could not even imagine how insanely awesome a sequel to Shadow of the Colossus would be on the PS3 hardware. I doubt they will ever make one, but we should still be allowed to entertain the notion even if it is wishful thinking. If they were able to adequately preserve how epic and badass it feels to scale and slay a colossus using next-gen graphics running at 60fps I would probably die of heart failure 30 minutes into the game.
