After being awash in next-gen buffoonery day after day as part of my responsibilities as a Big Important Internet Guy, it's nice to settle in with a nice pile of classic games and return to a time when men were men and two dimensions reigned supreme. 1UP's Retronauts: Bonus Stage is an integral part of this escapist routine, especially this episode in which Jeremy "Deathgraw McSlaughter" Parish and crew discuss the Mega Man series, which eventually degenerates into a discussion almost solely about how awesome Mega Man 2 is.
(Fun fact: Mega Man 2 is the best game in the smattering of MM games that Capcom has pumped out since the original's inception. This has been proven, you know, scientifically, with beakers and weights and whatnot. It is, as I have mentioned, a fact. A fun one.)
So hit play on that there video player and delight in a return to yesteryear -- the Retronauts crew really knows their business and tend to be a pretty good listen besides. Bonus: it's the only time you're ever bound to hear "arthritic midget" in reference to the Blue Bomber, unless you're speaking with the Rev. Anthony who calls everybody an arthritic midget.
I'll go along with 3 being superior for gameplay. Slide Move added and still new at that point. Rush introduced with full movement Rush Jet (Probably the best iteration of it), and round upon round of stages to play.
Megaman 2 had, only slightly arguably, the best music of any one in the series, though MagnetMan is nigh on classic.
i liked mega man 3 because you could actually control rush jet. after 3, rush jet automatically went right leaving room for us to fuck up. plus, it had the retro bosses from 2.
Man, I love Retronauts and Retronauts: Bonus Stage. Parish definitely knows what he's talking about. One of the few podcasts I regularly listen to - next to Podtoid, of course.
@ Aaron Linde: Hmm, allow me to rephrase? I liked Jeremy Parish back when he was far more cynical and much less serious. Back in the early Thumbnail Theater days. I'm not disputing that he's not an intelligent and potentially likeable character, but I just don't like what he does now as opposed to what he used to do.
Scott Sharkey on the otherhand, is just pure awesome, poured into a jeans-and-t-shirt combo with a sport jacket. He's so dreamy. I wish he'd ask me to prom.
To everyone saying Mega Man 3 was better... Quit being wrong. Sliding and the Rush the robot dog does not make that game more awesome than the awesomeness that was 2. It was just awesome.
Seriously, 2 is the best one. It's proven by science.
I'd say that 3 was way too easy to be considered better than 2. I still dont get why in Japan its Rockman, and that they didnt just use that name in North America as well.
screw that noise! rockman sounds like he ROCKS... well i think that proved whos right. anyways im pretty sure he was originally named rockman cause his name was rock before he became a fighting machine, not that any of that matters.
So whats the deal with Dr. Light, he's kinda big, shouldnt he be Dr. Heavy? just sayin
XD at tarbaby-man. Megaman 2 is certainly the best in the original series. Is the love for the X series in the 2nd part? Also love the tidbit about the Captain N Megaman at the end.
2 is not the best. I don't know which is the best, and two is definitely up there, but I don't think it can be the sole owner of that position. When bosses die in very few hits from the correct weapon, the skill required for them drops pretty hard. And sure, I could just not use the right weapon if I want a challenge, but I don't feel like finishing this sentence. "I don't wanna" might work.
3 was very difficult but not TOO difficult. A seasoned vet like me, that would actually go to the grocery store with his mom at the age of 4 wearing a blue shirt, pants, and gloves, could still struggle on some of the bosses or traps, but not because they were cheap or annoying. Just nice and challenging.
And look at the storylines. In 2...you fight Wily and win, the end. In 3, Protoman trains you and then saves your ass as Wily's castle is destroyed, and the ending reveals that while you thought he was your enemy, he and Mega Man are really brothers. DEEP!

Boo-boo-booboo-boo
Megaman 2 is, of course, merely 2nd place.
You bastard.

I mostly watched it for Scott Sharkey. :)

i may be 18 years too late, but was metal man supposed to look like a doctor?
