"Well I don't have much to say, but I'm the 'typical' straight white male, yet I feel quite the minority compared to LGBT folks. Sure mathematically you're probably right but it's all about perception and the crowd I hang with, the websites I go on."
I don't know what websites you frequent, but assuming gay people comprise 3 percent of the population, if gay themed content was 3% as prevalent as straight themed content was in the general media, there would be A LOT more gay exposure. Two companies make some gay themed ad and some sitcom adds in some token gay side character, and people act like gays are taking over society.
Growing up, you get more and more interested in your hispanic heritage but have no where to begin. You feel that it's really important to you that you understand your culture. You can't talk to the crazy hispanics down the road because you feel you have no common ground, they don't celebrate any hispanic holidays as far as you know and plain don't want to have anything to do with anyone else. They're really intimidating.
Now let's say there is a hispanic group in your town where you can meet other hispanic people that are nice, around your age, that know lots of customs, they're social and you know you have other common ground with (because you all play games).
Would you go to that group?
That's how a lot of gays feel. It's not just about straights vs gays, it's also about gays figuring out who they are.
Regardless, only the most ignorant of people refuse to acknowledge them as part of this community. IT'S JUST LIKE REAL LIFE!
Mr Sterling, you're good people. I'm so sorry I called you fat in your Vanquish review :(
*hugs?*
Because you're not separating yourself. You're having a gay old time and welcoming everybody from all walks of life to join in. I see it as nothing but inclusive.
Gaymercon, you find...
Freeman: Ridiculous
Why?
Freeman: You are going to relegate ones gaming to a convention?
Come on.
Freeman: What do you do with yours? Which convention is Straight Gamers convention? Come on, tell me.
Im Asexual
Freeman: Ok, Which convention is for asexual Gamers?
There isn't one.
Freeman: Why not? Do you want one?
No, no.
Freeman: I don't either. I don't want a Gayming convention. Gaming is universal.
How are we going to get rid of Bigotry until...?
Freeman: Stop talking about it. I'm going to stop calling you a Asexual Gamer and I'm going to as you to stop calling people Gaymers. I know you as (Random person). You know me as Morgan Freeman. You're not going to say, " I know this Asexual gamer named (Random person)." Hear what im Saying?
*Not actual interview.
I just want to say the "argument" that peoples opposing view is invalidated by privilege isn't a good arguing point, its not even an argument at all in fact because it disallows a lot of people from entering the fray and discourages discussion. Being privileged does NOT make your point of view lesser than another persons.
Thank you for this article Jim, I hope it helps educate some of these folks.
Being Progressive is fine, it's a hundred year old political ideology in America. However, it is a political ideology. I come here for gaming. For a review of a game I much prefer Destructoid to anything on the NYT or The New Yorker. However, for a defense of Progressive values, the gay marriage debate, and for insight and viewpoints on such, why would I come here?
Frankly, much of what your doing on this site could be considered http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda
The difference is that Chik-Fil-A is using their money to lobby against the rights of others. The law should protect the rights of the few, the marginalized and the underrepresented from the oppression of the many, the bigoted and the cruel. This is why people are actively against their stance. Whereas this convention is about openness, inclusiveness and awareness for those marginalized people.
I wish people would stop relating the two, they couldn't be more different.
"People can make [anything] gamer convention, they can even make [anything] [anything] convention for all I care, like Hispanics who like strawberries convention, and while we're at it, people can [anything] [anything] [anything], as long as everybody is invited and no one gets hurt."
Nothing about anything you just said makes any rational sense. Please try to make more sense in the future.
Here's where you sort of lost me. I sometimes play magic the gathering at my local card shop. It's a group of about 20 plus people, and having met most of them I can tell you there are people of all types just in that group alone. Old, young, conservative, liberal, male, female, white, hispanic, gay and straight. To me, I just can't see us branching off into multiple subgroups of magic players based on those criteria. To me, we all play the game.
I can see where you are coming from tho, and for someone who is lost joining a club like this is a great way to build esteem and confidence, but I guess looking back upon history in general you find that these things serve to divide communities more and more over time. It's like a double edged sword.
See it as your group is a place to learn how to play magic. You'll still hang out with everyone else, but you also have a group of people you talk and play magic with.
Gay people include themselves into everyday culture more than ever, but sometimes it's good to be able to meet people that can talk and play gay.
Its just an arguing technique I heavily dislike because it does imply that someone like me, a straight white male, doesn't understand if I disagree. I get the idea of trying to understand (I honestly dont think its quite that amazing of a leap to imagine things...) I just don't like the maybe unintentional implication that if you disagree then you cant possibly understand.
If it's to talk about their sexuality, then why is it a video game convention?
I don't get this either.
Of course, some people use it like a stick to beat others, which isn't good. At its best, it's something to be acknowledged in order for you to start seeing why something that's not a big deal to you might be to someone else.
Great post, Jim.
Good stuff though!
I gotta go play the VIDEOGAMES (in a gay way probably) so I'm done here after this. But yes, if Gaymercon goes down, I have every wish to attend.
Person B - So do I. They're great!
Person A - Oh, but uh, I don't feel comfortable talking to you about video games because I'm gay and I feel lonely and vulnerable. I will go lock myself in my room now.
When companies advertise to black people, I don't feel offended or isolated. When companies advertise to children, I don't feel offended or isolated. When I watch BET or Cartoon Network, a foreboding dread and loneliness doesn't overcome me (or, I imagine, anyone else with sound mental faculties). I find it odd that homosexuals would feel offended or isolated by advertisements directed to heterosexuals. I would have figured we all just tune out advertisements as static bullshit, regardless of their target demographic.
Are gaming conventions overtly marketed towards men? Yes. But quite frankly, anybody should be ashamed and embarrassed by being surrounded by half-naked adults pretending to give a shit about whatever you like in a cynical ploy to get you to buy it, regardless of anyone's sexual orientation involved in the equation. It's why I do actually dread being inside a Hooters, despite it being specifically designed for my demographic.
I'm pretty much just rambling. I don't know what my point is. I don't see the merits in one side isolating themselves. I also don't see the merits in the other side pushing them away. I guess I just wish a lot of these so-called adults who populate this industry--both those who produce its content and those who consume it--would begin to act like adults. This is a multi-faceted statement, and it is aimed at whoever wishes to take offense to it.
The difference is that Magic the gathering is pretty much inherently asexual (I think, I've never played it). Video games are a much broader media form that DO in fact deal with sexual topics, and DO have sexist/sexualized differences (most of the time you play as straight white males, and usually females are sexualized ridiculously.) There are gay movies, and gay Themed TV shows, but gamers in general still seem to cause a huge ruckus just because Mass Effect 3 lets you have gay sex, and I can only imagine the people that would constantly post about a gay protagonist is pointless because they are forcing homosexuality down our throats, or how games shouldn't have to deal with homosexuality at all, ignoring the thousands of games that take straight themes for granted. I would agree with you that it would be a little ridiculous if someone said they were a gay tetris player, but a gay gamer seems legitimate. (then again there is a big problem with homophobia and screaming "FAGGOT" over online games, so even a gay tetris player group I could understand)
I want to make an aside though, and say that I hope someone does a documentary on the convention, and names it "Modern Gay-fair".
I just joined because i didn't know any gay people and wanted to make some gay friends. I made lots of other friends already but didn't really have any gay friends at the time. It was nice to hang out with guys that talked about other dudes like i saw them.
I'm not really sure how to explain it.
