I never had an inkling you'd be of the bi variety Jim.
Anyway good blog, saw a link to the Kickstarter on someone twitter. I wish such a thing existed in London, so called land of bohemianism, but alas it's hard to find that special someone of the same gender that also likes to stuff their faces with multicoloured cupcakes, wank to Miranda Lawson and assplode in general geekyness.
It's going to suck when I have to start labeling gamers as straight or gay tho, as that's been something I never thought in my life I'd have to do.
I'm not saying it shouldn't have the right to exist as I'm all about as equal rights as we cam get, but this still just seems head scratchingly weird to me.
Maybe ill start a Hispanic gaming convention since we are such an overlooked public demographic.
Either way, thank you for existing.
You don't have to. It's about acknowledging gay gamers exist to the point where nobody needs to be reminded and we can all indeed "just be gamers."
I don't share your enthusiasm for a racial or gender based con at all, because that does feel exclusive and does segregate the community.
Also I have to actually applaud Jim for not being combative and over the top this time.
To be honest I'm tired of all this 'gay' stuff, I understand LGBT folks want the same rights as everyone, but then women want the same rights, fathers want the same rights and so on. We're just never going to live in a perfect world unfortunately, but I think all these things like "Chick Fila" and now this convention idea are all just riding on the recent talked about issues bandwagon. If people never campaigned for Gay Marriage of whatever is was (I'm UK so not too up to date on US News sorry) then Chickfila CEO Anti-gay comments would never of come up and LGBT folks would probably still be eating there. Right now. Everything's relative.
Your post has helped me to understand the bigger picture. Thank you.
Id like jim to rent the revolutionary war costume, and deliver this address to free the gay gamer from the shackles of not being heard/represented.......
It wasn't the point. If you read a Sophie article and get pissed off at Sophie for being Sophie, you did kind of bring it on yourself. :-)
Besides which, hating on a fundraiser because you don't like who told you about it is too silly a point to address.
So thank you.
Always been a fan of your work Jim and it's so nice to see how much your views have changed and grown over the years.
It can be hard to admit your privilege and it's important to mention it in posts like this.
I don't know how many people will actually change their mind because of this, but it certainly helps.
Seriously...fine work.
A+++
(Also I think Gaymercon's a cool idea.)
and be able to game in peace
thank you
It's also important to consider that sometimes events like these are a really fantastic for those that aren't out or are out but don't feel like they fit in with the gay community around them (be it what they see in media or actual people they know).
Before i came out i would have killed for a place where i could 'feel part of the gay community' while it also it being about my hobby.
Personal identity is an incredibly difficult thing to work out, no matter if you're straight, gay, trans or whatever. It might seem like a small thing but stuff like this really do help.
I wholly support gathering many hispanic gamers in one place, that this white boy may be in his hispanic female gamer glory. I don't know if that's both sexist and racist because I'm too young and horny to allow blood to my brain.
@Jim
Thank you.
It's less about labeling and more like...well think about the idea of 'girl gamers'. A few years back or so, think about how uncommon it was to find a girl that was admittedly into games. Nowadays that label feels forced, and the idea of girls that play games isn't really a big deal anymore. It's kind of like inoculation - when it's more accepted that gay people are a part of the community, the label loses meaning and becomes unnecessary.
Wish there we're more people that would just seem something like "Gaymercom" as another con with a slight twist in it to draw that crowd towards it, like Minecon is for Minecraft fans, Blizzcon for Blizzard fans, Gaymercon (aimed mostly towards) gay people. Not everyone likes those games and not everyone has the same sexuality, so not everyone has to go to them, just what appeals personally to them. ^_^
But now I'm just summing stuff up with no real point since you pointed out everything above. x3 Just wanted to say good job is all. :)
And yeah, you know the rest.
People can make [anything] gamer convention, they can even make [anything] [anything] convention for all I care, like Hispanics who like strawberries convention, and while we're at it, people can [anything] [anything] [anything], as long as everybody is invited and no one gets hurt.
If heterossexual women have problems enjoying videogames at peace one can only imagine a homossexual gamer, trying to get on xbox live and 90% of what comes to his/her ears is "GAY GAYASS GAY FUCK YOU" from mouths of kids, much of those, came to say an event like that is "unecessary".
Fuck everyone who is against this. Fuck you a lot.
As a barely middle class wage slave just trying to make my way through the world, it doesn't help to be reminded constantly at how privileged I am to exist, and how I should feel guilty every moment of every day for all of life's ills.
I understand the need to express who you are and cherish the aspects that make you individual, but I really do wish for the time when we can just be people, on the same crummy rock in space trying to make the best of it. All this "you're with me or you're against me" just wears you down after three decades.
I don't see why people have a problem with people who are similar gathering in an inviting place to enjoy a hobby they all share. If you don't like it YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO. If you're actively angry about it then you're probably an entitled dick though.
Saying this is segregating is like saying PAX is segregating because it's meant for gamers rather than anyone who isn't a gamer. If you're not in the target group you don't have to go, but if you want to you still can. Just deal with it people.
Still, I just don't like this segregation as a rule. It seems every time someone makes their own club, even with the best intentions in mind, it ends up turning into a them vs us attitude. Religion and politics are the obvious extreme examples here, and we already have fanboys of consoles and genres to carry the torch of division, so why make another clique others can't be part of?
Again, I can't stress enough that my belief isn't that something like this should'nt exist, but that something like this more often than not just divides one community while bringing together another, and that isn't usually a good thing.
Anyway, I await your inevitable flames.
*zips up pyro suit*
Oh, and every straight dude who ever complains that non straight dudes (gay guys and women, primarily) want a little attention from developers and the community should be forced to read this article, specifically your thoughts on the concept of privilege.
Anyway, thanks again. It's nice to flip through my RSS on a not-specifically-gay blog and see these issues being discussed. +1 for Destructoid.
That said I don't see any reason they shouldn't throw a convention if they feel the need.
tl;dr Don't call us f-gs or dy--s and we won't feel the need to "rub it in your face" as much.
I can tell you that this post fabulously describes why, as a gay man, I think Gaymercon is necessary and why "well, they can go to PAX and E3" is a really poor response to it. I look forward to seeing you at PAX later this month so I can thank you in person for this post, for Podtoid, for your articles, and for just putting a smile on this gaymer's face so often.
