I mean the criticism seems to be about not being fun to replay, the optional 3D effects and "Candy". I don't really get this review.
Anyway, I was never a huge fan of this game to begin with (profanity is no substitute for wit) but it's a shame they didn't retool it more extensively for the HD port. It seemed fairly popular at the Eurogamer Expo recently though, so perhaps there will be some interest in it anyway.
MAG
Killzone
Socom
Not to mention Resistance 3.
Move still rocks Jimbo, Move still rocks and it doesn't make you ride horses or stroke furry animals or DANCE. It's just found it's place as "optional control scheme" rather than "OMG YOU NEED THIS IN YOUR LIFE IT'S AMAZING!
Sharpshooter too. I <3 Lightguns.
Even the original Wii Version was rated at a 7/10--a well deserving score for a cult of a game such as this. I said "ouch" because of the way the game was handled. for instance--"Playing The House of the Dead: Overkill a second time round, I found it significantly less entertaining than it was on the Wii. Much of this is due to the shock value fading away as the endless stream of swearing and sex jokes fails to maintain the element of surprise. Initially hilarious, the vulgarity comes across as rather desperate on a second playthrough. The relative ease and simplicity of the game compared to others in the House of the Dead series if far more evident, too.
This makes it sound like it isnt capitalizing on what made the game interesting, if feels like theyre just throwing a bunch of swear words.
so, yeah. OUCH
Yeah, that doesn't make a lot of sense. I get the feeling it got an automatic reduction because it said Move and 3D enabled on the box, both of which Sterling hates.
I don't get why the customer is assumed to have played the Wii version just because the reviewer has. Perhaps this should have been reviewed by someone who had not played the Wii version? This was actually more of a "compare and contrast" article than a review.
Considering what your saying, and the fact that the Wii version got a 7 like Epic-Kx said then I'd say either take the 6.5 given and run with it, or squeeze blood from a stone and bump it to the level of the Wii versions 7.. A 9 however is probably going way too far.
Additionally, the Move support is spot-on and clearly the best way to play the game, especially if you have the benefit of a Sharpshooter peripheral. Next to Killzone 3, which is just fucking sublime with a Move controller, House of the Dead might just become my favorite reason to own a Move controller.
As for Move, I don't think I've ever said I hate it. Like pretty much all Sony products, I like it as a concept but hate the way people use it (or rather, DON'T use it). Besides which, this can be played with a SIXAXIS too, so claiming I didn't rate it higher because I hate Move is a silly thing to say.
Overkill's alright. I think the Wii version plays a bit better. I'm sure if you dislike that assessment, you'll still be alive tomorrow morning.
Yessir. It came free on the disc of the PS3 version of DS2. Liked it quite a bit.
@Jim
Glad to hear 3D has grown on you a bit. I'm a HUGE fan of it, but even I don't want 3D to be the future. I'd love to see it continue to be supported in games that make sense to have it, but I don't want gaming to be 3D or nothing. Options are good. Mandatory is bad.
Other on-rail FPS titles like RE: Darkside Chronicles and Dead Space: Extraction were much more enjoyable.
IMO it failed more due to being yet another on rails FPS on the Wii than due to not having the "family experience"
will pick this up once i got a Move.
same with No More Heroes Paradise :D
I agree with the way Jim reviewed it. I think most people want to know whether this is better or worse than the Wii version, and whether it's worth revisiting, or if this is a good version for newcomers, and he covered both of these. I think the score was fair too it's only .5 below the original score.
In my opinion if you are a newcomer and want to know more you should just read the Wii review, and then compare it to this one.
I might pick this up if it drops significantly. I still have yet to play the Wii version even though I borrowed it from my sister a few weeks ago,
That is why I thought it was a little weird that the score was so low since it is essentially the same game and one of Mr. Sterlings favourite Wii games.
That's bull... I enjoyed the Wii version so much, I played it over and over again. Also the "Extended Cut" doesn't force you to use the 3D, does it?
The sharpshooter feels ten times better than the wii to play with. The graphics are much much improved. There are extra levels and difficulties and crap loads of things to collect. How this gets a worse rating than some ****** 480p piece of trash is beyond me. That's cool, you can rate Skyword Sword and what not 10s and 9s but on some of your TVs these games look like utter trash because really they are from 10 years ago in capabilities.
I would like some God**** objective criticism of the graphics, sound if applicable, and the overall package and how it feels with the sharpshooter. The wiimotes are garbage and have never felt very comfortable to me. I love the Move controllers. But IDK I understand if you may not like a huge glowing ball in the dark or something just say so. But don't say it is less accurate because it is not. And does this run at 60fps?
Man, for being in the industry some of you guys come off as extremely indifferent and totally sloppy at times. That's okay but....
Also the frame rate would slow down to a crawl in the Wii version, especially in local multiplayer or when playing the dual-guns mode. Is this still a problem with the PS3 version or has this improved?
Calibrating the Wii remotes for an HDTV can be a pain in the ass, how was the accuracy of the Move controllers? You mention the game can be played with the regular controller, but often the reticule for such is slower and makes the game more frustrating, is that the case with Extended Cut or is it fairly similar to playing with the Move?
As someone who has replayed the original multiple times, I did not really get a sense of why exactly you did not think this version was worth re-playing, aside from the obvious dislike for the character Candy.
Just my 2 cents. Don't care about the score, just didn't get the info I was hoping for from the review of the game.
