Northwestern University Labs have created an automated system that generates a virtual news show using the Half Life 2 engine. "News At Seven gathers stories from around the internet, does some text-to-speech transfer, displays it using a game engine, and even tosses in some blog commentary." When you compare what goes into it to Alyx's performance, the results are pretty impressive.
With a little bit of fine tuning, personalization, some scripted camera closeups, and a little more body language this could easily turn into what Ananova was supposed to be years ago. If our lovely Valve lady can accurately report world news while bringing down striders with a bazooka, Katie Curic's going to soon have a peculiar contender.
