The hacked Wii browser... sucks

5:07 PM on 11.23.2006   |   Gregor

It is with great sadness I say this, but the makeshift Nintendo Wii browser really sucks. You have to set up a DNS redirect through your PC which changes the address that the Wii Shop channel tries to go to. The problem is that it crashes often and can't load a lot of images, which is why the Destructoid home page featured above appears rather... naked. You can't use text entry either, so no searching or logins. Should I even bother mentioning that there isn't a spot for URL entry?

The makeshift browser is constantly being worked on, so hopefully it will continue to improve, but until then the internet utters a collective, "Meh." The real Wii Shop says that the Opera browser should be coming Dec. 20, and every minute seems longer than the last.

I thought the Wii was about playing games? I'm confused as to why we need browsers.

Because the PS3 has a browser.

But the PS3 isn't about gamers? The Internets have confused my priorities.

I not sure if you're digging a hacked portal for not being a fully fledge web browser or the hackers to going to such extremes for such little reward. Personally I find it interesting to hear what people have found behind those front ends.

Summa, you or I may not need one but I expect some people may prefer the web on their tv and at the touch of a button rather than at a desk on a pc.

Summa, it's there for the same reason we have cameras and random shit on cell phones. They are supposed to be for calling people, but more shit gets put on because the companies can.

Actually I'm excited to see if people can make decent use of the Wii remote in flash games. I might even learn to make some myself if it becomes possible.

Summa, apparently so. Could also try more /funny and lay off the /flamebait.

Issue of needing a broadband connection aside. I see perhaps some of the older less technically savvy people being happy to use a browser on the system, communicate with relatives etc. For anyone reading these forums its kinda pointless although its nice that Nintendo have finally accepted to keep up with the Jones' instead of just saying NO WAY.

Yes, because Grandma and Grandpa will #1) have the Wii and #2) figure out how to browse the Web with it.

Lay off the NintenKool-Aid Jelster. Gramps ain't buying a Wii.

1) Why not? You continually approach this subject like a gamer when its quite obvious that Nintendo has made many efforts to offer more than that with the Wii.

2) Press power button, click envelope for email, news for news, weather for weather oh and web for web. While you could argue a PC is just as easy the maintenance, cost, viruses etc are all things many people (not just grandparents) don't want to play around with.

BTW - Branding me a fanboy because I pick up and chew out on your flamebait is a bit childish. Doing so and then following it up with some baseless prediction you can't substantiate kinda makes you look like a jerk.

I want porn on my Wii goddammit. That's the reason why they want a browser. It's all about the boobies (until "Interactive grope simulator" comes out...)
