It seems that the direct sequels to many ridiculously popular videogames during the retro glory days were unfairly chastised by the public. Super Mario Bros. 2, at least in America, was completely different from the original hit and audiences were not afraid to express their dissatisfaction. Even Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest rubbed players the wrong way with its confusing set of goals and (gasp!) non-linear gameplay.
Out of all the older sequels, though, I think Zelda II: The Adventure of Link for the Nintendo Entertainment System suffered the most backlash. And to be honest, I don’t understand why. I love the second Zelda game and truly feel like it introduced some elements I would love to see implemented in future games in the series (experience points!).
Do you love Zelda II like I do? If so, do you consider yourself an expert? Heck, even if you don’t care for it, do you at least remember it? Take this week’s quiz to find out how amazing your retro memory is!
Also, there is a prize this week! Actually, prizes! Just leave your answers in the comments and whoever gets the most right will win a Link plushie that is almost too cute for words and a Link phone strap that I also happen to have on my own cell phone (making it cool).Yes, I know, both of these things are not very manly, but, hey, it’s what the mysterious prize machine spit out this week. I don’t argue with advanced, slightly effeminate technology. Check my community blog tomorrow (3/13) for the dramatic results and to see how you fared.
Get out that Triforce of Wisdom and ... good luck!

I actually like Zelda II more than the original. Sure it was different, but to me it still felt like a Zelda game.
Leveling up got to be a pain in the butt though, once you got things to level 6 or so it started taking forever. A buddy and I figured out a nice trick to make getting those last few experience levels simpler though. When you beat the first few palaces jump past the statue and exit without putting the crystal in the statue. Then when you have that many experience levels left to get, breeze through the palaces and THEN put the crystal in place. Gets you an instant level up that's a lot faster and safer than grinding.
