The Great Retro Quiz! .12: Sonic the Hedgehog photo

I have a friend who is a genius at Sonic the Hedgehog. She played it religiously in college, but even today can sit down, load it up on my Virtual Console, and still remember where every single jump and power-up is in the game. If there is ever a sequel to The Wizard, I think I have a candidate for the main character. She’s so bad.

Do you think you all know the SEGA classic well enough to impress her (she is single)? Get that Binaca ready and test your knowledge by taking this week’s quiz, obviously all about the original Sonic the Hedgehog for the Genesis.

As with every week, just leave your answers in the comments and whoever gets the most right will win! In the event of a tie, this week I am going to try something a little different. Instead of just choosing a name at random, I have included a tiebreaker question at the very end of the quiz. You don’t have to answer it -- as it won’t affect your total score -- but if there is a tie, whoever gets the bonus question right will be the champion. And if there is a tie on that question ... well ... after my head explodes from all the stress, I will probably just pick a name at random again. It’s the circle of life, my friends.

The swell prize this week is a 2000 point gift card for the Wii Shop Channel that you can use to download all the games in the Sonic collection (hopefully ignoring Sonic 3D Blast, as that game is just terrible). Check my community blog tomorrow (12/6) for the results and to see how you did.

It was Sega's way of saying that the Genesis could process and calculate faster than the SNES. Sonic is faster than Mario in an 16-bit world after all.

Goddamn, I used to think I was great at bullshiting(I can get perfect scores in Game Informer's quiz's without knowing anything about the games in question) but these quizes have proven me wrong.
If you do something on say, Resident Evil, I am almost positive I can get a perfect rating.

Shit, I need to play more retro games.

19. N/A There IS no boss in Scrap Brain Zone. There is however, (c. 3) see-saws under the STAR LIGHT Zone boss. And if you mean the number of springs under the Final Boss used in Scrap Brain Zone Act 3, there are 8.

20. c. However, another way to do this with 1 ring is to jump onto a bed of spikes so that the recoil will cause you to fall on ANOTHER bed of spikes. In the American version the temporary invincibility will NOT activate and you will die immediately.

This can be found in Green Hill Zone Act 1 at about the 18 second mark at the first drop where two beds of spikes are between a yellow spring.

Jump on the right spike bed from the left and enjoy death's sweet embrace.

And, for good measure, BLAST PROCESSING.

I actually finally beat this game for the first time a couple months ago. If you didn't play any other Genesis games you'd almost swear the sound chip was comparable to that of the SNES. Sadly, not many others were able to work the Genesis sound hardware as masterfully.
