The Great Retro Quiz! .07: Contra photo

The Contra series has been on my mind a lot this week. Not only did I play a ton of Super C and Contra III: The Alien Wars, but Konami had an expanded, playable version of the upcoming Contra 4 at E for All and, to put it mildly, the game is amazing.

So to celebrate this mad love for the series, I figured a retro quiz based on the original game was in order. And when I say “original” I actually mean Contra for the Nintendo Entertainment System, not the true original arcade iteration. So, keep that in mind when taking this quiz, as both versions have significant differences.

And since I was at E for All, this week’s prize is a hodge-podge, if you will, of various swag from the big event. From a couple Wiimote keychains to a set of wooden Rock Band drumsticks, there is something for everybody (even huge people, care of some ridiculously enormous t-shirts). Just post your answers in the comments below and whoever gets the most correct will win (in case of a tie, I will pick a name out of my trusty war torn bandana). Check my community blog tomorrow (10/25) for the results and to see how you did.

I'm not even going to attempt this one because I know I will do a terrible job. Contra was one of the games my dad wouldn't let me play as a 4 year old, and he sold it when I was like 5 or 6, so I never really got to experience it. I think I'll have to go play my emulator all night tonight.

I'd just like to add that my answers were from memory as well, Spykron...this happens to be one of my favorite game EVAR (along with basically any other Contra game). I play through this game or Contra 3: The Alien Wars whenever I have a half-hour to kill.

CONTRA! I just re-purchased this game and played through it a few times this week! I also fired it up to answer one and flipped through the manual for another.

Cool, I never thought you would remember... your roots. lol jk. It turns out a Fat Man Plays With His Wii wasn't the best blog title, I figured that out after IGN kicked me out. I like Destructoid way more though, it doesn't reek of deception and previews praising the next game-movie tie-in only to slam the games later.... yet...

Also, cocks. Finally, I found the holy grail on the internets. I never thought a site like this could exist.

I wouldn't think he would count the boss battles as "rooms" but if so then yeah, 15 would be D. Otherwise if you just count the "rooms" as the vertical stages with the energy fences the answer is B. I think either answer would suffice.

Yeah, I've only played this game technically once. I own it though but I only played it once and with a friend. So I'm not even going to try this (even though I played only a couple of months ago). Not one of my most often-played games on my list. But I do look forward to Contra 4 and having a multi-player mayhem. So I'll have to skip out on this one Chad, sorry. I don't seem to have much luck with hat picking either it seems...
