The Golden Compass announced; Harry Potter fans rejoice photo

Magic spells. Talking animals. Escapades through frozen wastelands. Got a chubby yet? You can have all this and more in the upcoming game The Golden Compass, based on the first book in the award winning His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman. Pullman's fantasy series definately will make Harry Potter fans wet their pants, and surely the game and upcoming film adaption will be no exception.

The game is slated for a Fall 2007 release date and will be avaliable for PS3, PS2, Wii, Xbox 360, DS, PSP and personal holographic eyeball projector. I made that last one up, but if there was such a thing, you can be sure this game would be avaliable for it. On a more thrilling note, Daniel Craig will be playing the role of Lord Asriel in both the film and the games. Sounds like good motivation for both male Bond fans and women furiously masturbating over the new 007. How did I change topics from a fantasy world of armored bears to furious masturbation?

I loved this book. I'd recommend it to readers of any age, though it is technically written for young adults.

And the polar bears are armored, not mechanical. Panserbjorn, to be precise. And I want one.

Furious Masturbation would be a good name for a band

Does the holographic eyeball projector project a holographic eyeball, or project holograms onto the eyeball? Or both?

"How did I change topics from a fantasy world of armored bears to furious masturbation?" Is there a difference?

They should make a Game and movie around Gene Wolfs books. Any.

Anything Gene Wolf writes SHITS all over Pullman. Pullman is a joke.

Right, question: Why the did they rename the first book to "The Golden Compass" from "Northern Lights" for the US? Do they think the US cant quite get to grips with aurora borealis or something?

The book is an allegory of "Paradise Lost". Except rather than be all evangelical like Lewis, Pullman is an atheist. He points out the flaws of organised religion within the book, claiming that God is dead, there exist homosexual angels, and so forth.

The books seem like they're written for kids, but they're pretty damned adult in theme.

Yeah, though I read somewhere they are taking the "versus God" bits out? I thought that was the whole point in the books.

I'm sorry, mentioning masturbating and bears in the same sentence, and no one's brought up the 1000 lbs elephant in the room?

(sigh) okay, I guess I'm the only one...
I don't know if we're allowed to BBCode in YouTube, so here's just a link instead.

I'm kind of insulted you'd compare greatness like His Dark Materials to kiddie-pandering crap like the Harry Potter series, really. His Dark Materials actually is, y'know, written by someone talented. Not someone pulling Deus Ex Machina out of their butt every time someone gets in trouble.

@ Mxyzptlk:

Admittedly, don't get me wrong, I actually DO enjoy reading the books. But as an avid reader, English major, and aspiring author myself, I can't deny that they aren't the most well-written things on the market. Rowling uses deus ex machina -constantly-, which is more than enough reason for me to discredit her. And yes, I know you were probably joking, but what the hell. XD

Real title's northern lights. Silly yanks... Well, this'll probably suck, but I'm going to look forward to it anyway in the very, very minute chance it won't. Fucking love that book.

Let it be known I would slaughter every single one of you for a daemon.

Definitely joking. :) I enjoy the series, but there's certainly better stuff out there for younger audiences. I'm just glad it's gotten more kids interested in reading. A friend of mine actually created www.ihateharrypotter.com to troll Rowling fans and encourage them to check out other titles.
