The glory days of G4TV remembered

8:40 PM on 01.02.2007   |   Faith

Ask any gamer that watched G4TV before 2005 about the state of the station's programming now and expect him to spit on the ground, set a picture of Kevin Pereira on fire, and then curl up in ball to cry about the good old days.

Basically the station sucks now and like all the other ex-fans of the station, FJR12 misses the great tech shows that once were G4TV. Watch his tribute to the cancelled shows that once held a place near and dear to the hearts of gamers everywhere.

Note that Electric Playground is still part of the G4 lineup, even though FJR12 didn't notice and added it to the montage of cancelled shows. There is still hope, at least until G4 ticks off Tommy and Victor further and they pull Electric Playground from the station like they did Judgement Day.

T.V. for gamers! My ass. At least it used to be. It all started to go down hill as soon as they changed screen savers to AoTS and got rid of Kevin Rose.

I'll miss you, 'tech TV'. I liked pulse, and Icons, and Screensavers, yeah, definitely screensavers. All the solutions to my pc needs, damn them for taking that show off ther air...

seriously, that video is awesome. I remember that episode when he started eating rocks. that is awesome. Tommy Talarico was my favorite character on G4. and the G4 birthday song, tears.

Acutally G4TechTV in Canada still rocks and I plan to do an article on it. Rogers Media saved the tech only channel TechTV and merged it with G4, but they only show the tech related shows from G4.

More later on.

I never had G4 because it was never offered by the cable company where I used to live (to put it in perspective, I didn't get Comedy Central there either, fascists), but I did have, and greatly enjoyed, TechTV. Everything from Call for Help and Screensavers and ExtendedPlay before it became XPlay (and when it had that nerdy girl in the glasses as Adam's cohost as well.) Hell, I even enjoyed Unscrewed with Martin Sargent.

I figured as soon as I heard that TechTV and G4 were merging that all the shows I loved would be gone and sure enough they were, in like, less than three months time.

I have G4 now but I can't honestly remember the last time I watched it. I think I saw Man Show airing and never went back.

It's a shame. RIP to two good channels.

I remember watching Screensavers a whole lot. They didn't always do deep things on that show, but there were many things that they showed me the way on with XP and linux that I do actually wish they were still on the air. Leo Laporte FTW!

I'm sorry, but G4 never had glory days. They've always been a retched piece of ass. TechTV on the other hand never had anything but glory days.

yeah G4 is pretty much a second SpikeTV with one show about games. Looking at the schedule for it now there is 7 hours before a show about gaming comes on. And Kevin P. does get annoying but he is who i first heard about destructiod from so he's not all bad.

G4 was never good, the only decent original content it ever had going for it was Icons. And they ruined that in the last year or so too.

TechTV on the other hand was gold. This magical Canadian G4TechTV sounds good Faith. Lucky!

And there's people who actually liked Pulse? I couldn't watch that even with the help of narcotics.

i loved G4... LOVED IT and part of me deep down always will

btw i LOVE arrested development but its still doesnt belong on G4

I think that most people originally from the merger thought the other was to blame. I was certainly on the TTV side, I have fond memories of channel 354 on DirecTV being my only channel on for weeks at a time.

In reality, it's Comcast, all the way. They bought TTV and threw G4 together. Their ultimate goal was to create a channel that creates money. Nothing more. They failed in their intial effort. Love it or leave it, neither channel was making good money. TTV was burning cash like crazy on huge tech giveaways. G4 was ridiculed by the gaming press for being little more than video clip shows and Tommy Talarico's ego.

So, merging didn't work. They trimmed shows, trimmed talent, and now they've earned the scorn of the community and they have nothing. Let it go as a shitty knock off of Spike TV. That's what I did, and now and forever it remains a blocked channel on my lineup.

G4TV=MTV, They both have followed the same path. MTV was all about music television, now its crappy t.v. shows. G4TV was all about video games, now it is all about t.v. shows. The only thing I like on that channel now is arrested development.

I remember the days when G4 was actually for gamers. Now it's SpikeTV2. Soon enough SpikeTV will go "RIPOFFS!" and buy whatever shows they can off the air. The countdown begins until X-Play is removed from the lineup because the head honcho is so screwed that he doesn't realize X-Play is the only thing that holds G4's ratings quasi-high. (Of course I'm going out on a limb here)

Oh do I miss you former host of Cheat, Cory Rouse (MUCH better that Ms. Slut) Former hostesses of G4TV.com, Former Host of Filter, Diane Mizota (as before, MUCH better than "IM CUTE LOOK AT ME YOO MEN I GOTS MEH BOOBS!")

G4 sucks now. I could go tune to it right now and then scoff and look away.

I was one of the people who had TechTV and not G4. As soon as the merger happened is when it all went downhill for me. I upgraded to a digital cable box just so I could watch TechTV, and around a year later that lame G4 crap took over.

The Screensavers was awesome (go Leo!), X-Play had Morgan Webb before she got mainstream and whored up, and Call For Help was just fun to watch regardless if you're a computer pro, or a new user. There was a lot of other greats too, but I can't remember them right now.

I haven't even watched that channel in a good year and a half at this point, and most of the time I forget that I even have it. It's sad, because a few years back, I was so excited to have a channel on TV that was dedicated to my interests.

Like they say, all good things must come to an end. I'll miss you TechTV.

G4 just needs to die, and I think it will soon. G4 and E! are going to be sharing resources and studio space soon. I can imagine that eventually G4 will be merged into E! and we'll have one less horrid channel to flip past. I still remember when TTV was ZDTV ans X-play was Gamespot TV....

It would have had better effect if he left out Sweat, Cheat, and Arena. God those were terrible shows.

On another note, somebody please get that man an English tutor before he decides to publish something else on the Interwebs.

Do they still have Cinematech? That was one of my favorite shows to watch.

This really makes me appreciate living in Canada because they still show gaming oriented programming and haven't replaced it with Star Trek and Arrested Development. Basically, it's still a channel about gaming and not so-called "male-oriented programming (SpikeTV clone)."

Cory Rouse is the most annoying person on Earth (Not saying the new host is any better.) Diane Mizota was a goddess you bass turd! I mean look at who replaced her, the slut trophy girl friend of Howard Stern.

I loved G4 back in the old days (I was in middle school mind you, 18 now). I had the miss fortune of never seeing Tech TV before its unholy merger with the now crappiest channel next the MTV.

I'd much rather watch Star Trek and Man Show reruns than looking at a bunch of MTV rejects pretending they knew half of fuck-all about video games.

To this day, I weep and mourn the loss of TechTV. You can't go wrong when every other show is hosted by Leo Laporte. Dude knows his stuff.

Yeah, G4 and TechTV used to be my favorite channels. Each one catered to a very specific audience, and it was great times. I remember learing how to build my first computer by watching Patrick and Leo on the screensavers. I learned how to diagnose various computer problems on Call for Help. I learned so much about the video game industry and the designers of my favorite games by watching Icons. Both channels were such a pleasure to watch, it's sad just thinking about their fate. I loved turning on the TV and seeing Dave talking to Bernie (that badger creature from EQ), It was so nerdy, and so so great. And during commercial breaks they would show high score videos and interviews with people in Ebgames stores and their opinions on games. It really felt like a gaming channel made exclusively for the hardcore gaming audience. But then the two channels merged...all the great hosts from TechTV were fired, and soon after, most of the G4 hosts as well. The programming became more mainstream, and then most shows were dropped. All I see now is Star Trek (not a fan, but not a hater either) and occasionally Attack of the Show. AotS is ok, but The Screen Savers was definately better (although I do have AotS to thank for introsducing me to Dtoid). Anyway, those days are gone and G4 is pretty much dead to me. I will miss you G4 and TechTV, you were both very dear to me. May you rest in peace.

i liked the old school G4 and i miss such great shows as Portal, Cheat with that guy who no one remembers his name, and of course Arena. but i believe that this is the natural progression, when i was twelve i was nerd, now that im older ive come into my own, i still enjoy all things nerd but now i also enjoy girls, booze, pop culture, entertainment ect. and i think AOTS is brilliant, but i agree some shows should be gone, ie trek, Man show, u know the bullshit

Well since G4 became what it was Im glad Allgames.com is around since it does what G4 was meant to do.. 24/7 gaming media. It was also created by a co-creator of G4.. Scot Rubin who left G4 after it became a pile of crap. I guess he had the same attitude most of us gamers did. If youre feeling a void in your heart where G4 used to be try Allgames.com. Gaming radio shows all the time. Good stuff.
