The Getaway won't go away: PS3 sequel still coming, possibly a movie too photo

The last we ever saw of The Getaway on PlayStation 3 was way back in 2006, where Piccadilly Circus was shown off in impressive, supposedly real-time glory. Of course, that was two years ago, so you'd be forgiven for thinking the title was scrapped. You'd think wrong, however, as Sony has come out of the woodwork to confirm that the next Getaway sequel is still coming.

Screenplay writer Katie Ellwood has confirmed that the game is in development, and has promised that the PlayStation 3 will provide a more engaging experience than ever before.  "We can stream a wider variety of dialog and animations to progress the story and characterization rather than breaking the flow of the game play for a cutscene," she stated. "If games are about immersion, then we are now about to deepen that immersion."

As well as the game, Ellwood also claimed that Sony is looking into a Getaway movie, revealing that the House of Blu-ray is sniffing around several production houses for a film that ties in with the third chapter of the franchise.

No details have been spilled as far as a release date go, but Ellwood promised that the game script is an exciting one, and hinted that they have a writer on board that will be just as thrilling. That's all for now, but if Katie's "watch this space," comment is anything to go by, we could be hearing something sooner rather than later.

The PS2 games weren't even very good, were they? Of course, when has that ever stopped a developer from making a sequel.

everything about the getaway games always screams win on paper, but the execution always blows. the first ps2 title had amazing characters, london looked good, the game had a much more realistic feel than anything GTA has ever offered, but the game plays like a soggy peanut butter sammich. and then the psp release... we'll just pretend that never happened. hopefully they'll get it right this time.

I remember first playing those games. And like the first big shootout i would get shot to shit. And then i would ask myself, Where are the fucking health/med kits? And i wasnt until i died numerous times. That my character leaned against the fucking wall and magically his bullet wounds were healed.

I dont read instruction manuals im cool like that....

P.S.This game could make a really good movie if Guy Ritchie directs it.

Anything would be an improvement on the PS2 games.

This game will make the "Lair" controls feel great.

I only remember playing the demo of the PS2 original, and thinking that the controls were absolute crap.

I only played the second one on PS2 and I did enjoy the atmosphere, characters, and how they managed to include absolutely no hud at all, but I do agree that the controls where pretty awful.

I enjoyed the second one, to an extent. Compared to other sandbox games *cough GTA cough* it wasn't as good. But I like how they did try a few new things, like the HUD-less gameplay, and the story was alright. But yeah, the controls were crap, and it was actually a pretty tough game.

The first 2 games were shit, why would anyone get excited about this one? It's not like "teh Cell powerz" are going to turn them into a competant development studio.

You be better off watching the Steve McQueen/Ali MacGraw classic (Thank you, Sam Peckinpah!), than wanting to play this unconnected series of games.

(The '94 remake with Alec Baldwin/Kim Basinger, not so much)

I'll remain a little optomistic, most likely I'll have to play a demo or listen to how others liked/hated it before I consider picking it up based on how bad the others were.

I only played the original Getaway, and at first I thought it was ridiculously hard, what with no HUD and no healing, and then later I learned that to heal you just need to lean up against a wall, and then instead of thinking the game was ridiculously difficult, I just thought it was stupid.

It's funny though, now the standard is "hide and heal," and it doesn't phase me. I guess just the fact that you have to lean against a wall throws me off.
