I'm loving these SNES write ups - I can't wait to see what's next!
I believe that the lack of gaming decadence during my childhood is what fueled my passion for gaming. Just the chance to play anything was revered, as I could never afford to bathe in video games. When you don't have the luxury of having something on top, you're forced to appreciate what you do get that much more.
Also I agree with you Tony anyone who thinks there's a console war between the 360 and PS3 is clearly out of their minds.
Amused with the snes. So were my friends that came over, so I can relate to the staying up really late to play final fantasy or donkey kong! Great times have been had thanks to the snes!
Excellent write up to bring back memories...vectorman was cool though...
and here in Brazil it's exactly like that, everyone loves Genesis (Mega Drive here), loves soccer games, Pump It Up and Counter Strike. And i don't know why we love these things so much!
As such, I have much fonder memories of the SNES than I do Genesis. Something about Nintendo in the 16-bit era is just fucking golden. They were better, hands down.
Oh and nice write up, keep em coming Dtoid. In my case my cousins were the sega kids so I played sonic whenever I went over, and they would play contra 3 and DKC whenever they would come over. Good times all around.
I'm also kinda surprised that people want an SNES for Zelda because it's an open world game. The Genesis had some really good open world games like Landstalker, Beyond Oasis and a few others.
Note: SNES owner at the time.
Appearently today its in which one has the better, less shifty online services (and it looks like, generally speaking, no one wins in this fight either).
"Perhaps this is purely anecdotal, but have you ever noticed that Latin-American gaming trends are the polar opposite of those in the States?"
Actually I have, and its kinda funny others have too. I almost want to blame Latin-American's penchant for revolution, but I also don't want to get my ass kicked.
"Being the greedy little brat I was, I would frequently suggest to my parents that they gift me an SNES to supplement my Genesis. Yeah, that wasn't happening."
My cousin had both and it was his dad was pretty successful.. And the only reason I ended up with both is because somewhere along the line he gave me his Genesis.
And its funny how I'm kinda stuck in the "only can afford one home console at a time" predicament again.
"he would frequently bring up his love for The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Admittedly, the concept of an open-world adventure with no explicit level structure sounded absolutely boring."
But you were once a happy little Nintendo player right? Link to the Past really isn't much different from the first Zelda, so I'm kinda confused by that (other then those types of games just boring you in general)
"Had the situation been reversed, it might have been the Genesis upon which I gazed with the same wide-eyed wonder."
See, this is my reason for being so enthralled by the genesis, even after I had one, I kept getting SNES games and rarely ever bought any Genesis games (only 3 I remember buying, that my cousin didn't give me, where Comix Zone, X-Men and Eternal Champions). For some reason the Genesis was like some unknown territory, and even today I'm intrigued by it somewhat, even though I still don't track the games down and play them.
Great Article Tony, a really awesome read.
Mexico was a Super Nintendo territory, without any doubt.
A friend from my block had both SNES and Genesis, and with him I played several of the best games of both systems. I had only the SNES, and it was awesome, but yeah, Genesis also had some great games.
SNES was vastly superior. It looked better, played better, sounded better. But I did eventually get my own Genesis just to play some exclusives.
This is something that cannot be doubted: SNES won. It was superior. Vastly so.
This being said, the Sega CD has so many hidden jewels, that it's a damn shame that the FMV crap and general shitty library brought it down.
Oh, but how I wish SEGA was still around in console form.
But you were once a happy little Nintendo player right? Link to the Past really isn't much different from the first Zelda, so I'm kinda confused by that (other then those types of games just boring you in general)
ALttP was my first Zelda. I couldn't play the first two even if I wanted because they were only available on the Famicom Disk System at the time, which I didn't own.
I never owned an SNES or played it more than a few times when it was out, but I've played many of its games and I have to say it is the better system by far. It's weird that some of my favorite games like Super Metroid and A Link to the Past are for a system that I never even owned. Even better, though, is that I know for sure that nostalgia's got nothing to do with it.
OT: Genesis was a marvelous machine, if SEGA hadn't screwed up with the megaCD and the 32X, now we would have a SEGA console and wouldn't have to suffer this painful forsaken.
Anyway, I was a Genesis guy, too and I'm not really sure why. I can't really remember asking for a Genesis OR an SNES. I had a regular NES and then a Genesis appeared. I even got the Sega Channel around the last couple of years of its life. That thing was awesome.
I think both systems ended up being pretty damn even really. I mean, even back then, Nintendo had its staple of classic games that EVERY Nintendo platform since has had (Zelda, Super Mario, Mario Kart, Kirby), but Sega had it's own list of awesome games that really didn't have any analogs on the SNES.
Things like Comix Zone, Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy (Treasure was a pretty awesome developer), Ecco the Dolphin, and Sonic Spinball.
The only time I can remember gloating to SNES owners about what I had and they didn't was when Mortal Kombat came to the Genesis WITH blood and had the gore removed for the SNES.
Good times...
You said you were looking for a Zelda-type game from Sega, well here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StATbJTqL0Y
I can't believe I've never heard of this. It really is the same damn game as Zelda 1 with slightly better graphics.
Wow.
A nice Zelda alternative on the Genesis is a game called Crusader Of Centy. Highly recommended.
I still get a sick satisfaction to this day when I think about how often I was poled fun at for not owning the "cool" system (the Genesis) and finally knowing now that I was RIGHT! In the end, the Super Nintendo was the better system! I miss those days...
SNES Mortal Kombat - Dude kicks you in the chest. Wait, what? That's not even a fatality! He does that all the time anyway!
Advantage: SEGA
The simple reason?
Better Mortal Kombat port
Better Street Fighter 2 port
Every Sports Game was better on Sega
