The Gamers Desk is looking to make couch-based PC gaming more comfortable photo

Here’s another product that falls under the “It’s so simple, why didn’t I think of it?” category. Manufactured by LapWorks, the Gamers Desk is essentially three connectable pieces of plastic that provide a surface for a mouse and keyboard or a mouse and laptop to rest comfortably on your lap. This product is being specifically marketed towards gamers that keep PCs hooked up to the huge HDTVs in their living rooms, though I could see PS3 Unreal Tournament III players getting a lot of mileage out of it too.

Curious as to how it might feel, I took a board about the size of the Gamers Desk, put it on my lap, and sat my keyboard and mouse on it. While it seemed (and probably looked) a little weird at first, it did feel surprisingly comfortable. I couldn’t test how it might feel with a laptop on it (because I don’t have one), but I do worry that depending on the model and time used, it could really heat the thin plastic up -- not to mention feeling uncomfortably heavy after a while.

My only real problem with the Gamers Desk is the price: $39.95 for three pieces of plastic seems rather steep. Still, if you’re one of the aforementioned gamers that keeps their PC hooked up to a big TV and is looking for something a bit more comfortable than a coffee table, this might be it.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA—June 19, 2008— LapWorks™ Inc., the market leader in ergonomic and heat- reducing laptop desks and stands, today announced its initial entry into the PC Gaming market with the portable Gamers Desk. As PC gamers move to their couches to play First Person Shooter (FPS) and other high precision games on their HDTV or laptop screen, the Desk provides a comfortable, ergonomically-sound, wide flat platform across the lap with ample space for a broad gamer keyboard and optical mouse or a laptop and external mouse. Measuring 26 ¾ x 11 inches across including a 6 x 9 inch mousing area on either end, the Gamers Desk is made of high-impact ABS plastic, comes in modernistic ‘gun-metal’ gray and retails for $39.95 directly from LapWorks.

“LapWorks’ Gamers Desk makes a timely entrance into a converging market where many traditional desktop PC gamers are moving with keyboard and mouse in front of the TV, once the sole domain of console games,” said Jo Jo Marks, director of marketing for Ideazon, maker of the popular Zboard Gaming Keyboard. “The Gamers Desk helps bring PC gaming into the living room, where gamers can leave their desks behind and use a wide platform to handle a keyboard and mouse on their lap.”

Avid PC gamer and Gamers Desk beta tester Alex Artigues talked with LapWorks about PC gaming trends. “PC gaming in the living room has to date been limited because not all video cards were powerful enough to drive an HDTV display, HDTVs were too expensive to gain much traction, and it is a pain to use a keyboard and mouse on the coffee table or couch.”

Artigues added that advanced FPS enthusiasts may prefer the precision of a mouse over console game controllers which have few buttons and joysticks with a limited range of motion.

“We wanted PC gamers to be able to play in comfort and with control wherever they are,” said Jose Calero, president of LapWorks. “Whether gaming on a couch or in an easy chair in front of a big-screen TV, or at their PC, the Gamers Desk supports all gamer keyboards with plenty of room for an optical mouse.”

The Gamers Desk arrives in three parts which are easy to assemble. Two Futura MouzPads snap easily into place, one on each end of a Laptop Desk Futura. LapWorks also provides four locking plugs which can hold the MouzPads in place semi-permanently.

LapWorks designed the MouzPad so heavy-handed mouse users won’t inadvertently snap it off, while also being easy to remove simply by lifting up its outer edge. If precision gamers find that they require a stronger hold, they can use the locking plugs.

Visually aesthetic with a bursting oval-shaped pattern and open ventilation slots which allow heat to escape, the assembled Gamers Desk is rigid, thin (1/4-inch), lightweight (1 pound 9 ounces), and foldable in the middle for easy transport and storage. Soft non-skid rubber pads on the middle portion of the Gamer Desk keep gamer keyboards or laptops from slipping. There are four utility holes for cables, pencils, pens, etc. It carries a 6-month warranty.

LapWorks expects later this year to launch the Gamers Desk in colors and patterns similar to the recently-announced Painted Laptop Desk Futuras. Pricing is undetermined at this time.

Not NEARLY enough space to move the mouse around.

why not just reappropriate a breakfast in bed tray? It even comes with the slot to keep your red bull in!

@kielejocain

I guess it would depend on the width of your keyboard, but that's about how much space I use to move the mouse around on my PC desk.

@Yoj1mb0

I know what you mean. It looked kind of awkward to me too until my cheap, five-minute experiment.

that mouse top looks so small. How will this work for us left handed fags?

I use three snack trays in a semi-circular pattern when I game. Keyboard on the left, laptop on the middle tray, and mouse on the right.

Total cost: $23 bucks. And plenty of room for snacks.

kinda want as well. However, for the price I would have hoped for something a tad more comfortable looking on the underside.

Maybe they should cross this product with this one:

I'd switch that out for a well endowed upper half, Niero.

I have a feeling that after a day or 2 of playing games with your wrists at 90 degree angles, you'll wish you never spent $40 on this thing. Unless carpel tunnel is your thing.

I have to agree, way too small mouse room. Needs to be about 2x that size.
I'll also agree a better solution is to get a breakfast in bed tray.
I'll also say why not just get a proper desktop monitor? They're cheap as piss for giant ones compared to HDTVs. Like 5 times cheaper.

That's the same viewing size as an HDTV with the increased distance between you and it by being on the couch back from the TV, at a teeny tiny price tag in comparison.

niero its not too bad for 40$...yes the bottom should have a little cushion for the pushin'

I can work with the given mouse space, but more would be better.
It would be cool to try out but i know i would rather stick to my setup.(which fucking owns thanks to dtoid)

Its a known fact that PC gamers are homosexuals. Not that there is anything wrong with that. (i added that last part so nobody would be offended).

Uhh... I got one of those TV trays that holds my mouse and keyboard, amongst other items like ashtray, remotes, and my highball glass. It cost 18 bucks, AND it comes with a stand, so that if you're prone to getting a twitchy leg during a heated up duel such as I've been known to do at times, it's not gonna mess up your aim. Also, much moar mousing surface than this thing'll give me. But then again, I guess I never was one for lapboards.

Nice idea but going from a 44 x 35cm mouse mat to that would be like... It wouldn't work, simply put.

I suppose if your mouse has the capability, you can adjust the sensitivity to compensate for the lack of space but that might be pushing it a little.

It'd be alright for doing less mouse intensive stuff I guess.

I don´t know you, but I like to rest my forearm (is that how it´s called) in the space between the mouspad and the end of the desk.
I can have my keyboard on my laps, it´s not unconffortable.
But having the mouse on my lap it´s like you are having your hand on the air the whole time, I would get tired really soon.
And yes, the space for the mouse there is too narrow.

Y'know that would be a good idea if it weren't for the fact that you can only move the mouse about two inches.

You're probably better off using a smegging coffee table.

The keyboard lifts up and under it lies the real mouse pad.

Good for MMORPGs and non competitive FPSers. just good luck trying to read the on screen chat.

That looks pretty dumb, however they make lap pads for writing that have nice cushy bottoms already. Might be a good idea for my boyfriend, since he plans to get a wireless kbm set to go with the new (used and super fucking cheap) HDTV the computer is hooked up to...

6 x 9 inch mousing area

Oh' dear, if this is for the "high-precision" activities described, I doubt that would quite accomodate the user.

Since when has "gun-metal" grey been modern?
