The Game Blame: Games blamed for vitamin D deficiency photo

Games are blamed for everything else, why not low vitamin D levels in U.S. children?

Videogames do a body bad, says a newly published study in Pediatrics. It says that seven out of ten kids suffer from low D levels, which could lead to bone problems, heart disease, and even diabetes. 7.6 million children could be considered deficient, and videogames and television are called out.

From Times of the Internet:

Low vitamin D levels were especially common in children who were older, female, African-American, Mexican-American, obese, drank milk less than once a week, or spent more than four hours a day watching TV, playing video games or using computers, the study found.

It's not games' fault if you don't drink milk or go outside! I personally fall under the last four categories, but I'm not going to blame games. Drink some Sunny D and game on, kids!

I have a new report, to be published on non-medical games journal Destructoid. It's called "Everything Wrong with U.S. Children: Reasons Uncovered." It's a one page report, with only one line:

Laziness

At least they said "watching TV, playing video games or using computers".

Kids don't go outside enough; I'm just sick of people blaming video games when Facebook and TV are just as much to blame, if not more.

It's easy to get vitamin D:

Go outside in the sun. Your body GENERATES vitamin D from sunlight.

I'm diabetic and I drink more Sunny D than most kids.

Most kids these days drink bad vodka. The shit they put in those airline drinks.

Nobody ever likes the good stuff, like Santana DVX.

What kind of sick fuck lacks Vitamin D? Orange juice is unarguably the most awesome drink EVER !

I have a big window. That's enough.

Yes, I close the blinds. But the window is still there. Sometimes sun comes through it.

Orange Juice does rule.

I wonder why no one ever points out that gamers are less likely to get skin cancer due to less sun exposure? If they want to make that argument, it really cuts both ways.

Sunny D is not orange juice; it's orange high fructose corn syrup water.

Vitamin D deficiency is something that happening all over the US currently. Not just kids playing games, my mother who is 52, and has never played a game in her life just got diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency.

This sounds dire. On the bright side, by simply reading this comment, you have fulfilled your daily requirement of vitamin H.

Not too long ago, I found out that I suffered from vitamin D deficiency. I have OCD, so I spend most of my time in my barely lit basement just playing videogames. The thing is, if you suffer from vitamin D deficiency, your mental condition will worsen as well, so it's not exactly helping much.

So lately I've been taking supplements and going through a diet change, while occacionally sitting on my porch in the sunlight. The changes that have happened are fenomenal! I'm more motivated, vigourous, active, focused, positive, and my skin is cleaner!

Things are turning out for the better! :D

I love how "covering up and wearing sunscreen" is a cause for this horrible affliction, yet, it doesn't point out that skin cancer doesn't just mess with your bones, it kills you dead.

If you want some vitamin D, eat some yogurt. It's a great breakfast.

I'm going to release a 1-page study which simply explains that "the problem with this child is most likely a result of shitty, inattentive parenting".

It will be my gift to science. Professionals can use it daily with no attribution or royalties necessary! Hell, take credit!

I live in Canada. Winter lasts roughly 6 months here and this summer has been unusually rainy. Let's blame video games for causing the climate change that led to this crappy weather :(

I'm not sure how reporting a correlation equates to "blaming." Obviously, games do not lead to vitamin D deficiency. There is most likely a third variable related to both increased game playing behavior and decreased vitamin D. No reason to get excited.

what else can we blame games on? gangs? the poor economy? people losing their job because of economy, er...i mean games? john mccain picking sarah palin? meth? the poverty in africa? the Israel/palestinian land despute? the 900 pound chick i just saw on tv? foxnews? the brady bunch? 9/11? guns killing people?(which i find funny because no one wants to blame the bullet makers for it but can easily blame pot for it).

god fuckin dammit, is this what our society has turned to? blaming everything else but ourselves? i can do it, i blame myself for my fuck ups, not my single mom who had 3 fuct up boys, not my dad who was not there, not my schools i gradated from, not the internet, not pot, not alcohol, not coke, not xanax. myself. i blame myself. can these fuckin cocksuckers do that?

I take vitamins supplements during the Winter and Summer time a lot. Not because of video games, but for the reason that my mother doesn't know how to cook for shit.

Putting sunscreen also makes you have low D levels. Parents should let their kids just enjoy the sun. If you're white you only need 30 mins of sunlight and for people with darker skin only need hour an long of sunlight.

I drink milk every day, the idea of not drinking it in an entire week is strange to me.

Fuck those assholes.

Don't blame games for the fact that your kids are fat as shit. Blame the kids for being lazy little fucks.

Sorry for the cursing :P

Correlation =/= causation. I didn't read the study, but it seems like the article (Times of the Internet? I've never heard of it and do not trust!) threw in the 'blame' for more hits.

What sick kinds of games are these kids playing that require you to eat absolutely nothing? There's no way that you can blame computers, games or TV for these kids just being stupid and not realising hunger = YOU NEED NOM NOMS
