The Future: You can now pause an Atari 2600 photo

If you're like me then you started gaming on the Atari 2600 back when gamers were gamers and men were men. The one I played was in a relative's basement that I had to walk up hill barefoot in the snow both ways to get to, and I had some epically long marathons on that sucker. No breaks. Why? The Atari 2600 didn't have a pause button, and that meant that sometimes you just had to man up and hold it in like a real American.

Yeah, you whippersnappers don't know how good you've got it. Back in my day we couldn't stop the game for nuthn'. But these days everyone is weak and mollycoddled little Nancy boys, so I suppose that explains why someone has finally developed a way to pause Atari 2600 games.

The wimps over at Atari Age have created a kit that lets you pause the games or, to put it more accurately, freeze them into oblivion until you come back. If you're a little ladies man like they are, all you need to do is plop down $20 and do some soldering, and you can go to the bathroom all you want without have to worry about any asteroids ramming into your ship. If you're a manly man with electronics, but still a girly man when it comes to gaming, you can even follow the instructions to make a kit yourself.

The kit was created by Victor Trucco, who based it off of an "Onyx Jr.," a Brazilian Atari clone console from the 80s, and the only Atari system with a pause button. Quite impressive for someone who can't control their bladder long enough to beat an entire videogame in one sitting.

I'm with you, sir, I too began on a 2600. One still under the "Video Computer System" label, or whatever it was before they differentiated the model for the 5200. Not only that, but I was man enough to have it in my own house. I had to walk that hallway uphill both ways in the snow, but so help me, I did it.

Also, SNES had already come out. I may be a youngin', but I still started on the 2600. Retro before retro was cool. Hell, retro before retro was possible.

The header image seems backward to me. Wouldn't it be more American to be able to pause your games?

I believe that the first game system to natively support the ability to pause was the NES. The Onyx Jr. is the earliest system that I know of that does it all.

If anyone has proof of otherwise, feel free to prove me wrong.

@ norton - Colecovision let you pause before NES. No proof, just childhood memory.

It never even occurred to me that I couldn't pause my game. The need never arose and so the thought never entered my mind.

Interesting.

@sakesushi
No becase manliness. Didn't you read the article?

I've got two 2600s right now. One of them works fine, and the other is a fickle bitch. The later one is, ironically, a later model. I've repaired it a half dozen times, but it never quite works right. The idea of soldering in a pause button and risking destroying my one good Atari terrifies me. The idea of paying 20 dollars to add a pause button to the other system, that only works when it feels like it is also terrifying.

I think I'll stick to not drinking beverages while I play Towering Inferno. Or next time I decide it's time to pop in Adventure, I'll get me a bedpan.

Nah. Real men back in the day racked up enough spare lives to allow for a bathroom break. :P

My first console was a 2600. NES came out about 18 months after I got it. It was all downhill from there...

My old Intellivision had the "1 + 9" pause on the keypad. Glad Atari finally caught up.

(I'm sure George Plimpton is rolling over as we speak)
