The future of gift giving: Wii's new 'gift' feature photo

I've always said that gamers are the easiest people in the world to buy gifts for: we always have a massive list of "wants," and so many games are made these days that we'll never catch up. We're coming around to that time of year again where we start to think about gift giving, and now it looks like Nintendo has found a way to make a buck from your kindness.

A new feature has just been unveiled that lets kind-hearted Wii-owning gamers send other Wii owners a game as a gift via the Wii shopping channel. You'll be able to purchase and send the game to another online user, and when they accept the gift, the download of their new game begins.

"We think this will be a breakthrough in encouraging customers to spread news of fun games word of mouth," Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said. "We also hope to spur more users to connect their Wiis to the Internet."

Just think about how handy this will be if you forget one of your friend's gifts this holiday.

Hopefully we'll see this feature enabled before this holiday season rolls around. As of now, no launch date has been announced.

I've already heard people bitch about this new feature and how it doesn't do anything special, nobody will ever use it, and who would want those games anyways but I think it's pretty cool.

I don't think it's the most amazing thing ever that will cause everyone to buy a Wii but it's a nice little touch on top of a lot of other nice little touches that round the system out even more nicely.

How about you fix the storage issue on Wii, because there is not enough space. It is a good feature, this gift giving thing, but it isn't going to make anyone buy the system on its own. The good thing is it doesn't have to.

Well, the only other option before was to buy them a points card, so I guess this will work out ok.

So, can you send games you bought for yourself to other people when you're done with them? As in, it leaves your account, and goes to theirs?

This is really cool. Yeah, it's not entirely a new idea, but it's not that widespread yet, so I have to give props to Nintendo.

That's a fun idea. Again, they need more memory on the wii... I'm sick of deleting channels to make room for new ones.......

So are we gonna be able to give away games we already bought or does the option to give as gift only appears when you're buying a game?

@Das Inchworm
Agree

This would be totally awesome if you could "gift" games you had previously bought and are now finished with.

What if someone doesn’t accept the gift?

“Hey, you tried to give me Donkey Kong Country?! Well, (A) I already have the game, and I still play it on my SNES, and (B) you only wanted to spend $8 on me? You cheap bastard!! I fucking got you Rock Band and this is how you reciprocate?! Fuck you, dude!”

this would be cool if the VC games werent just straight emulations and allowed multiplayer co-op...if that were the case if i wanted to play with a friend in street fighter i could just gift him the game and we could duke it out...

sadly this is just going to realistically do nothing unless you have siblings or friends that you want to gift a game that you think is cool

XBLA would be perfect for this feature...

also is there a regifting option...because sometimes people dont always like their christmas gifts

Finally! Now I can buy people Zelda II and send it to them so they realise just how good it actually fucking is! If there's one game that never got a proper sequel that Treasure should totally bone up and do, it's Zelda Fucking II!

I wonder what happens if you gift a game to someone who's already downloaded that title? Neat idea, but I think I'd like even more if we could just gift them Wii points so they could buy whatever they want.

If you gift someone who already owns a game, I expect that they would give them the points credit. If they don't, that would just be stupid.
