The Bungie weekly update was a big one for Halo fans this week. In this weeks update, Bungie talks about their co-op pains, their podcast, the tweaks the Energy Sword is gong through, their latest contest and of course, the WETA designed Warthog.

Um. The dudes at WETA made a Warthog. I don’t mean that they made a big plastic thing that looks like a Warthog. I mean they built a fully-functioning, four-wheel steering, powerful, off-road vehicle with a machine gun on the back. At the correct scale. If you live near Wellington, New Zealand, you might even see some crazy machine-shop dude from WETA fishtailing around your base, ahem, I mean neighborhood.

I want to move to New Zealand and get hired by WETA so I can be the tester guy. What's that WETA? You want me to put on the MJOLNIR armor and test drive the Warthog around the track? Okie dokie!

Also, after the jump is the video called Arms Race showing some footage from the Halo movie. I thought I'd include it since this video never made it on the site during the chaos of E3. Expect a video of the Warthog in action too in the coming weeks.

All it needs now is spinning rims. If I had the money, I would totally buy it off WETA.

Yeah, that's pretty sweet. Just a side note, my understanding is that the Arms Race short isn't, in fact, comprised of scenes from the Halo movie, since it has yet to find a studio willing enough to gamble on the sure-to-be big budget film. Universal and Fox dropped out when Jackson selected unknown Neill Blomkamp to direct.

Arms Race is more or less a tech demo to give fans and film studios an idea of how Blomkamp, Jackson, WETA plan to handle the adaptation. In my opinion, it looks promising as hell and proves that Blomkamp isn't the wild card that Fox and Universal may have pegged him as. I wrote up a post on this subject, along with links to Blomkamp's other short films. You can see it here. I suggest you take a look at his other stuff. He's got a really unique style that's really raw and gritty. His technique lends a very real sense of credibility to his works. I'd love to see what he can do with the Halo franchise.

Why call it a Warthog? It definitely looks like a Puma to me...

I always thought the Peugeot Hoggar looked a bit like the Halo Warthog.

God, that halo movie demo is embarrassingly lame. I guess some things just don't translate well to real life. Like the simpsons, it's not pretty in real life. The warthog though, is pimpin, gotta get the hypno-rims for it y'all.
