With BlizzCon going down this weekend in Anaheim, we're sure to hear lots of news pertaining to all the Blizzard franchises we love. I selfishly was looking forward to Diablo III news most of all, and that's just what I got: Diablofans reported a new class was announced for the game today, The Monk! Check out video of it after the jump.
Checking out the Korean section of the official character page reveals a closer look at the character, who is the third new addition to the game (the only returning character from Diablo III so far is the Barbarian). Blizzard still has not confirmed an exact date for the game's release, only saying it is coming in 2010. Just looking at this character screen makes me remember the days of choosing my character from the Diablo 2 character select screen. Ahh, please be kind, Blizzard, and give us this game sooner rather than later!
That's cool and everything, but I really just want to hear about some abilities. Is it weird that I would rather see a random skill tree than class names/images?
You know you should be a tabletop gamer when . . .
I am pretty sure Hellfire was actually a 3rd party expansion, not an official Blizzard product. So, they may technically NOT be double dipping. Still, I hope the monk plays differently than D2's Kick-sins.
Sounds a lot like a new coat of paint for the Assassin... mixed with a few other skills. I don't know, am I the only one seeing old rehashes and amalgams of previous characters and skills in ALL of these "new" classes? O_o I don't know, maybe I'm just paranoid. Still looks pretty damn interesting. Though I sure do miss the rendered cutscenes and the FMVs...
Tiger Strike, you say? Assassins were probably my favorite melee class!
Too bad there wasn't any actual gameplay footage (yet) of the Monk like there was with the Wizard announcement... and it sucks more that it'll be delayed until 2011.
Based on that trailer, though, the class looks to be a mix between Assassins' combat (burst of speed, tiger strike) with Paladins' auras in some form.
Here's to hoping the Rogue class returns as an archer, but with a melee/stealth tree-line of abilities for actual assassin-like gameplay!
I agree that I hope there is no gameplay mechanic connection between the D3 Monk and the D2 Assassin. I tried so hard to like the Assassin, but I just couldn't get past the attack chain limitations. It's entirely possible I just never got one to a high enough level to get the full potential...*shrug*.
I certainly remember D1s Hellfire expansion. Meh....
nostal: it's not just you. personally, i normally find Blizzard puts out some really top-notch FMVs for their games, well directed and with solid acting. watching this video, i was reminded the whole way of Dynasty Warriors... not a good thing!
The longer they tease D3 without actually releasing it, the longer they can sell the Diablo Battlechest for the same $40 that it's been selling at for the last decade.
It just screamed Avatar with a beard minus the arrow on the forehead. I dunno. I really really want D3, but so far, the only class that looks interesting is the wizard. Barbarians were never one of my faves from the previous game and the witch doctor looks boring.
I really hope they have something similar to the Paladin because that was my all time favorite class.
Plus, I know the game's not close to being done, but the graphics in this trailer looked pretty bad. The Monk's staff and his fingers seemed really blocky with harsh angles. But I'm sure by the time the game's ready to come out stuff like that will be taken care of.
As much as I enjoy Diablo and generally enjoy Blizzard's art direction in its games... these models look way too heavily-inspired by Guild Wars to me, oddly.
on another forum, someone commented, properly correctly, that the graphics in the trailer were basically all in-game graphics, rather than fmv stuff. which makes sense, since they certainly look it.
up close, these character models dont look that amazing, sure, but keep in mind that most of the game will be played at a bird's eye view with a load of enemies on screen - you have to expect that, when you zoom in on things, they wont look *quite* as attractive in that perspective. personally, i think the game looks quite attractive when actually watching some of the gameplay videos, so it works well enough for me.

This time it's going to be the happy rainbow unicorn level.
Double dipping, Blizz! ;D

too bad blizzard's definition of soon is like 3 years later
I remember hellfire and it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the headline. Talk about a nostalgia bomb.

True, it was developed by Synergistic Software/Sierra, but still!
i'm sure it's just an aberation, but, ick.
LMFAO

Yes. That and, well, WoW. The gameplay footage is generally top-notch, but...
I am sad.
omfg..common...the first videos of d3 looked 100 times better.
wtf..
