Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Here it is folks, the first gameplay footage of Mega Man 9 for WiiWare. There's really not much to it and the entire video is covered with lots and lots of text. This video, in my professional blogger opinion, has to be the biggest tease ever made for a game.

The graphics are exactly what you would expect since they're going for that 8-bit retro feel and the music sounds absolutely amazing. Wow, I can't believe I'm about to say this, but this is the first time in years that I'm actually excited to play a new Mega Man game. How about you?

I'm so glad the music is 8-bit, and it kicks much ass.

Great move Capcom.

Woah, this looks pretty cool. But the only way I'll play it is if it has Okkusenman in it

One thing I can't understand about Japanese videos. They always put a little video under their essay. How do they not get annoyed at that?

That looks really sad and uninteresting, I don't see anything new or fun. It's just more of the same little blue guy jumping from platform to platform going pew pew. Snore

damn. there's so much negativity.

i don't think capcom made this game for you, the people who started with X and moved on to something better. they made it for the people who have loved, to death, the NES originals. i'd like to think that they did it to PROVE that they can still make one. it's for all the people that complained they should go back to the "classic style" and they literally did.

who knows? maybe right after this one, mega man 10, or whatever, will be an HD super well drawn flashier version of classic mega man

They don't need to prove they can make it. I could make that game and I dropped out of college (for software engineering) half way through. It's really not that difficult.

I've been hesitant about this game, but then they used the old sound effects for shooting and damaging the enemies from Mega Man 1 and 2 as opposed to the sound effects used in 3-6 and I got a little exited.

I hope the levels aren't just rehashes from old games like the screenshots make them out to be.

I'm still excited as hell for this. Only because I hope it resparks Capcom though. Hopefully they go back to their roots and find a way to come back out with new Megaman games that are awesome after this. Really, I never got into the 8-bit Megamans. I just loved what came after.

@iwontusemyname: There is a reason why I dropped out, I'm way to lazy and unfocused to make a complete game. Programming is monotonous and complicated problem solving, and while making a 2D sprite based game is relatively simple, to do anything besides create one scene where the player moves a sprite around is more effort than I'm willing to put into it. I do however have a grand idea for a game that will never reach fruition because of my faults, but it would be glorious if I ever got it done.

I can't freaking wait. After all these dreadful years, it seems like Capcom is finally listening to the fans. The greatest part is that they are sticking to the Megaman 1, 2 and 3 styles and not the later stuff.

Why is there a delay between screens? What's the differences between this and a rom hack?

Do you people seriously not understand the difference between this and a ROM hack? I'm not looking forward to this game, but come on, people. Think smart. Use your heads.

I'm a little disappointed actually. I was hoping that they would go with a 16-bit look(SNES era sprites are 16-bit, right?).

That being said, I like the music in the trailer. I certainly hope if "feels" as much like Megaman 2 as it looks and sounds like it.

So Syn you talk a lot of crap but can't back it up at all. Wow.

I, for one, am hugely excited about this. I love the way Capcom is going about it. Artists revisit older art styles all the time. Filmmakers experiment with old style dialogue and filmmaking techniques. Musicians resort to 8 track recording to get "authentic" old sound. Why should video games be any different?

This shows the progression of video games as an art form, another tool in the repertoire of game makers.

Dang, I can barley see the actual gameplay but it looks alright.

I understand the appeal of the 8-bit look, 8-bit music, and even the 8-bit level design...

...but this is also 8-bit code. Full-page screen scrolling? Flickering? Jerky movements? Oh, please. We hated that crap back in the days compared to the ultra smooth scrolling in other, more modern games of the era. Why would we like it now?

My take is that it's just an experiment to see if they can get half-baked, half-assed ROM ports off Virtual Console and on to WiiWare, so they can make more money. I certainly don't think they care enough about the actual gameplay to make the game good if it's just a marketing query.

I'd pay for a modern game with an old fashioned graphics style, like Fez. Hacking an old game is just yet another bullshit test of people's tolerance, because they can't be bothered to do anything... you know... new. That's what Revolution was supposed to be about, right?

It's been a whilie sense I've played me an 8-bit Mega Man game. I loved Mega-Man 3 when I was a kid, but by the looks of it this game is a step backwards. Hell even Mega Man 4 looked better. I know they are trying to go for the old school feel but I would rather they had gone more towards the later portion of the 8 bit era. They learned how to push those 8 bits far, why are you giving me a NES launch title rehash?

Looks awesome. But I'd have to hear how long it is. But I wouldn't want another five minute WiiWare game. Too many games are coming up short on WiiWare, Such as Star Soldier R, POP, And Protothea. Looking forward to it though.

I haven't heard much about this game, but I can honestly say I won't be able to sleep well until I get this game. I haven't had this feeling for a Mega Man game in a long, LONG time.

@skruloos: Honestly what difference does it make? You want me to write a game just to make you look like an ass? What exactly would this accomplish? The point I was making is that they aren't putting any effort into this game to make it interesting and a drop out could duplicate their work.

Seriously though, this is a bit of a copout. Take off your rose-colored retroscope and realize that even if it IS a great game, it's still - for better or for worse - the same thing that you had 20 years ago.
