The first official Dead Space 2 trailer has finally crawled its way online. The new game follows Isaac Clarke once again and it appears that he's not all right in the head. The trailer shows the conflict going on inside of Isaac as it cuts between Necromorphs and Rorschachs like the ones we received over the weekend.
Check out this clip from PAX 10 for more on the survival-horror space adventure and check back sometime next month for a preview off Dead Space 2. Be sure to visit the official Dead Space 2 website as something neat should be happening pretty soon.
Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

And wow @ the helmet on face
Nice little teaser, hopefully E3 will give us a lot more details.
Don't blow your load too soon, it's just a teaser bud.
I was going to get the first one today, but....does it focus on scientology as stated up there???
Totally agreed. I've heard too much about how they're focusing on more action now. I don't want a different version of F.E.A.R. I want more dead space, more of that fucked up level of paranoia, and not entering any rooms with the lights off for a couple of days. This trailer doesn't really point in either direction imo though. You can't gain anything real from what is essentially a teaser.
unitology, they practice unitology in the dead space universe. either way, how the hell are you getting an 'action vibe'? we haven't even seen any gameplay. besides, the first dead space wasn't exactly a survival horror in the traditional sense either, it was an third person shooter/action adventure with horror elements. i played the game on the hardest difficulty and never found myself lacking ammo or really having to conserve health/stasis.
that being said, it was my personal GoTY and i look forward to the sequel. i really do hope they flesh out the unitology aspect, and it seems like the game has a lot of fiction to expand on to create a really interesting story.
As usual the Audio Designers/Engineers are doing a top notch job in delivering what makes this game the best "horror" title in existence.
This game needs to be played loud.
I agree. The reason I found Dead Space to be so immensely refreshing was the slower pacing and the anticipation of combat.
I also think the more action-oriented approach is reflected in the new futuristic design of Isac's suit. Dead Space had this kind of theme of an engineer being greatly outmatched and using his ingenuity to create improvised equipment. His armor was bulky and crude. He moved with this great sense of weight. The new design is more slick and futuristic. Hell, we've already seen that he has jets in his boots!
I hate being "that guy" who just shoots down sequels because they are different, but the developers have already touted that the sequel will be more action-packed and Isac returns as this avenging figure. I just think that what they've said and shown of the game thus far, doesn't really match what made the original so good.
Becoming more action-oriented is not necessarily a bad thing. Remember System Shock 2, the game that largely inspired this franchise? By the time you reach the endgame, you're probably feeling pretty badass from all the abilities and powerups that you've attained over the course of the game. But it never really lets up on the horror aspect because your supplies are so limited that one more encounter with an enemy still could be your last if you panic and something goes wrong. Plus, the nature of the enemies themselves continue to provide scares as well.
I get what you're saying about the move from Alien to Aliens, but I'm one of those people who think Alien i immensely superior to Aliens too. I think a huge part of my enjoyment with survival horror games is uncovering the mysterious events that are taking place. Usually in a survival horror game, there's some kind of outbreak or mysterious events that takes an average joe and puts him into a horrible, unnatural world, and he has to make due with the few every day items he can find. I like the player character's unfamiliarity with the enemy and the situation he/she is in because I like to vicariously experience the player characters horror of exploring that unfamiliar world. That's why I like the first three Resident Evil games the most. They're all about people who are unfamiliar with their situation. When Leon Kennedy ends up facing zombie-like enemies in RE4 he takes it all in with this sort of cool calm that just doesn't evoke the same kind of emotions as when I watch someone in 1,2 or 3, freak out because the freaking living dead are walking around and eating people. The same goes for Isaac in Dead Space 2. He's faced the Necromorphs before, and he's obviously all the wiser for it, with more fancy weaponry and is now returning to actually fight the aliens. I just don't think it's a good premise for survival horror.
C'mon, I know you people are out there...
Whereas Dead Space is possibly the most polished survival horror experience out there, it never really warranted more than one play through from me. While I do value atmosphere and tension over action, I will still be interested to hear what this sequel has to offer.
Hero is plagued by terrible images caused by an 'alien' marker that reveals far worse than man are coming to kill him. Of course you just know it will all be in his head.
I wouldnt even compare this to alien, thats just dumb. while there are obvious styles shared, its painfully obvious that the main source of inspiration for this game is Event Horizon, which in turn, was inspired by later lovecraft.
Ive been trying to pause the video just as the unitology symbols pop up...
Anyone had better luck than me?
Im looking forward to it, I enjoyed the first Dead Space quite a bit.
Have I missed something, or has it been confirmed yet whether or not they will be making it available for the PC? :/
More action doesn't mean they are eliminating the horror feel, but that they are cranking up what made the first game so intense.
I want a really creepy, disturbing survival horror game and maybe this will have some moments like that but if it's more action-oriented, I'm fine with that. I enjoyed the first one quite a bit and am looking forward to seeing what this one has to offer.
Also, Aliens > Alien though really they are two separate beasts but hey since opinions are vital for the internet there ya go.
My point? Sure, it's different, but different isn't always bad. Isaac may be more of an action hero this time around, but it might make for a better game in the end (just like Aliens was a better movie than its predecessor, in my opinion).
I'm still excited.
Wow, great parallel. Alien and Aliens are significantly different, and Dead Space reminded me, in a way, of Alien. If Dead Space is going to change a little into Dead Space 2 like Alien changed a little into Aliens, I'll probably react similarly. I'll miss some of the nuances and atmospheric emphasis from the first one, but I won't be able to ignore the pretty undeniable awesomeness of the new one.
Also, this game is going to blow the shit out of EVERYTHING, I swear. I can't get enough of this franchise.
