The first official Dead Space 2 trailer has finally crawled its way online. The new game follows Isaac Clarke once again and it appears that he's not all right in the head. The trailer shows the conflict going on inside of Isaac as it cuts between Necromorphs and Rorschachs like the ones we received over the weekend.

Check out this clip from PAX 10 for more on the survival-horror space adventure and check back sometime next month for a preview off Dead Space 2. Be sure to visit the official Dead Space 2 website as something neat should be happening pretty soon.

AMAZING! Do we actually hear his voice too, or is it the psychiatrist speaking the entire time? It's hard to tell with all the creepy Necro-noises...

Yeah that's his voice there for a second.

Nice little teaser, hopefully E3 will give us a lot more details.

I loved Dead Space. I beat 4 times. I bought it thinking it would be fun but might just end up being Resident Evil knock-off in space. I thought it would just be something to play before the "real" RE came out. Turns out Dead Space was a better Resident Evil game that RE5! After being so disappointed with RE5 it just made me want to play Dead Space again. I hope this sequel doesn't go the same route as RE5 though. The first game had some genuinely scary and tense moments and I hope they continue in the second game.

Totally agreed. I've heard too much about how they're focusing on more action now. I don't want a different version of F.E.A.R. I want more dead space, more of that fucked up level of paranoia, and not entering any rooms with the lights off for a couple of days. This trailer doesn't really point in either direction imo though. You can't gain anything real from what is essentially a teaser.

Well at the end it says "reborn as one 614" meaning that they'll show something more during E3? But I'm going to love knowing Issac more deeply than what the last game had... seems like Necromorphs are gonna be contaminating the cities now eh?

@everyone,

unitology, they practice unitology in the dead space universe. either way, how the hell are you getting an 'action vibe'? we haven't even seen any gameplay. besides, the first dead space wasn't exactly a survival horror in the traditional sense either, it was an third person shooter/action adventure with horror elements. i played the game on the hardest difficulty and never found myself lacking ammo or really having to conserve health/stasis.

that being said, it was my personal GoTY and i look forward to the sequel. i really do hope they flesh out the unitology aspect, and it seems like the game has a lot of fiction to expand on to create a really interesting story.

@twelvefiftyone They did those inkblot things. The very first teaser of Dead Space 2 was an inkblot with unitology writing on it, which we had to figure out for ourselves. Followed by more inkblots. This isn't the first teaser we've had for Dead Space 2. maybe they've moved past the whole "mysterious that helps explain tidbits of the game's story" and decided they need to show game footage now, IMO.

Nice to see Isaac is still alive and the story is progressing around this Ripley type of character.

As usual the Audio Designers/Engineers are doing a top notch job in delivering what makes this game the best "horror" title in existence.

This game needs to be played loud.

I agree. The reason I found Dead Space to be so immensely refreshing was the slower pacing and the anticipation of combat.

I also think the more action-oriented approach is reflected in the new futuristic design of Isac's suit. Dead Space had this kind of theme of an engineer being greatly outmatched and using his ingenuity to create improvised equipment. His armor was bulky and crude. He moved with this great sense of weight. The new design is more slick and futuristic. Hell, we've already seen that he has jets in his boots!

I hate being "that guy" who just shoots down sequels because they are different, but the developers have already touted that the sequel will be more action-packed and Isac returns as this avenging figure. I just think that what they've said and shown of the game thus far, doesn't really match what made the original so good.

I find the combat in Dead Space to be a little weird. Enemies would attack you and knock you down. Then they would back up and wait a while for you to get back on your feet then a couple seconds later they would attack you again and repeat the process. Then when you finally lose all your health, the enemy would actually use their "finishing" moves on you. Issac must be made of fucking iron to withstand that much punishment from these aliens while other humans in the game gets diced in seconds.

You know what this reminds me of? The transition from Alien to Aliens. The first one was a straight up horror movie that focused around the crew dealing with a foreign monster that stalked them and killed everyone except for one person who stepped up to do the impossible. The sequel focused on Ridley's psychological trauma from the event, and clearly showed that she'd had to go back and face the menace again to really come to terms with it. It was far more action-oriented as well, but still very tense and suspenseful in many parts.

Becoming more action-oriented is not necessarily a bad thing. Remember System Shock 2, the game that largely inspired this franchise? By the time you reach the endgame, you're probably feeling pretty badass from all the abilities and powerups that you've attained over the course of the game. But it never really lets up on the horror aspect because your supplies are so limited that one more encounter with an enemy still could be your last if you panic and something goes wrong. Plus, the nature of the enemies themselves continue to provide scares as well.

I get what you're saying about the move from Alien to Aliens, but I'm one of those people who think Alien i immensely superior to Aliens too. I think a huge part of my enjoyment with survival horror games is uncovering the mysterious events that are taking place. Usually in a survival horror game, there's some kind of outbreak or mysterious events that takes an average joe and puts him into a horrible, unnatural world, and he has to make due with the few every day items he can find. I like the player character's unfamiliarity with the enemy and the situation he/she is in because I like to vicariously experience the player characters horror of exploring that unfamiliar world. That's why I like the first three Resident Evil games the most. They're all about people who are unfamiliar with their situation. When Leon Kennedy ends up facing zombie-like enemies in RE4 he takes it all in with this sort of cool calm that just doesn't evoke the same kind of emotions as when I watch someone in 1,2 or 3, freak out because the freaking living dead are walking around and eating people. The same goes for Isaac in Dead Space 2. He's faced the Necromorphs before, and he's obviously all the wiser for it, with more fancy weaponry and is now returning to actually fight the aliens. I just don't think it's a good premise for survival horror.

Who is buying this simply to support Activision's arch nemesis EA?

C'mon, I know you people are out there...

Whereas Dead Space is possibly the most polished survival horror experience out there, it never really warranted more than one play through from me. While I do value atmosphere and tension over action, I will still be interested to hear what this sequel has to offer.

This going to be very lovecraftian design it seems.

Hero is plagued by terrible images caused by an 'alien' marker that reveals far worse than man are coming to kill him. Of course you just know it will all be in his head.

I wouldnt even compare this to alien, thats just dumb. while there are obvious styles shared, its painfully obvious that the main source of inspiration for this game is Event Horizon, which in turn, was inspired by later lovecraft.

More action is good. What made Dead Space so good compared to RE5 was that it didn't shy away from action. Instead of giving you bad controls "to increase the feeling of tension" while you fight slow, stupid enemies who sprint up and stop 10 feet from you to mill around so you can shoot them more easily, Dead Space gave you good combat controls and made the enemies actually attack you. In Dead Space, there was real tension; you were worried about enemies jumping out because, when they did, they did so with the intent to fuck your shit up with a spike made out of their spine instead of brandish a hatchet in a vaguely threatening manner.

More action doesn't mean they are eliminating the horror feel, but that they are cranking up what made the first game so intense.

@SWE3tMadness: I was thinking the same thing about the transition from Alien to Aliens. Seems like Isaac is hardened a bit and the intensity will be ramped up to reflect that.

I want a really creepy, disturbing survival horror game and maybe this will have some moments like that but if it's more action-oriented, I'm fine with that. I enjoyed the first one quite a bit and am looking forward to seeing what this one has to offer.

Also, Aliens > Alien though really they are two separate beasts but hey since opinions are vital for the internet there ya go.

While I share some of x1251's concerns, I'm sure Alien fans were just as worried about Aliens after seeing its trailer...

My point? Sure, it's different, but different isn't always bad. Isaac may be more of an action hero this time around, but it might make for a better game in the end (just like Aliens was a better movie than its predecessor, in my opinion).

I'm still excited.

Wow, great parallel. Alien and Aliens are significantly different, and Dead Space reminded me, in a way, of Alien. If Dead Space is going to change a little into Dead Space 2 like Alien changed a little into Aliens, I'll probably react similarly. I'll miss some of the nuances and atmospheric emphasis from the first one, but I won't be able to ignore the pretty undeniable awesomeness of the new one.
