Lol.
I loved Duke Nukem 3D when I was a kid. But then I grew up.
And Duke didn't, really. None of his game is an evolution of anything in particular. And it's biggest sin is that it is overly long and incredibly...just boring. It's bland. Ugly. Half of the darker levels suck because you can't even tell what you're actually looking at, and then using Duke Vision just makes them suck more.
Mario has actually grown up, his games have evolved and even branched out to be really successful franchises. And frankly, Mario isn't trying to be a parody of anything. He justa Mario.
Anyhow, like I said before. Let people defend Duke to the death, it's not going to change the inevitable, that he's pretty much lost now as a relic in the history of gaming.
I've always thought games like Serious Sam (coming out a full 10 years after Duke's first foray) and Bulletstorm were parodies of Duke, himself being representative of a younger, more immature era of this industry. Having said that, I'm not a fan of those games either, probably since they weren't funny or celever either
To everyone saying Duke isn't satirical: Read a fucking dictionary. I think the series flew WAY past your head if what you get out of Duke Nukem is "All men should tear the heads off small animals and sleep with every woman in the world" and not find that in the least bit exaggerated.
1. Duke Nukem the -character- is a white trash action hero. He was a novelty in his time and therefore embraced by gamers everywhere young and old. He was cool when Howard Stern was cool, he was everything exaggerated about the male id. His time was 199X. It is now 201X. If Duke Nukem didn't have the guns and the babes and the prestige, he would be in a trailer park, beating his wife. Take that same personality and apply it to someone without the fame and godliness, and you have trash. Now that his character is presented again, the glaring inconsistencies with his narcissistic personality type are glaringly obvious.
Also, he runs away like a little bitch to refill his ego. Cool story bro.
2. Duke Nukem Forever - the game - is bland, mediocre, and shows signs of it's developmental stress. The game they showed in 2001 looked way cooler and smarter than this festering pile of shit that Gearbox decided to finally unleash upon the public. It is also stuck perpetually in old game ideas, but none of them are executed very well. The game sux shit.
So, there are my arguments. They are consistent.
"This article is just another example of why video games will never be held in the same regards as film or literature. Gamers and gaming critics are just way to inconsistent with their arguments to ever be taken seriously."
eh... movie critics are all over the place too. it's all subjective.
the difference is that film and literature evolved from an art form, and then became entertainment. video games are the other way around.
I think tha main problem is that DNF was not tastfully made and that is Gearbox's fault cause well they sort of suck at making games, not that boarderlands was bad but it really was just a diablo shooter with some cell shading.
Not to mention the story was not that great
Duke makes me laugh.
Laughing at references to old movies? Sounds like a parody, and sounds like you're wrong.
Whats your point? Jim isn't a videogame character. But if he was he would be a lot funnier than Duke. I've laughed more with a short Jim video than with Duke Nukem 3D from start to finish.
Cunt.
In any case, I really enjoyed this - please do write more in this manner.
In many Jimquisitions, he also acts out other things, including pretending to be a furry in a Sonic hat fucking a plushy Sonic. Well, hopefully he was pretending. Please, for the love of god, have been pretending, Jim.
Look, the point is that Jim clearly doesn't take his persona seriously. It's hard to think of a single Jimquisition where he stays serious, ranty, and holier-than-thou throughout.
The point with Duke Nukem is that it's not a persona. That's not an act he puts on and then he's relatively normal the rest of the time. He's not presented the way he's presented for contrast or to create humour. That's what he is. This is the world he lives in. People think he's awesome there, and we're supposed to believe it too.
Duke Nukem is not awesome. He's gone beyond So Bad It's Good to straight up Bad.
Points: Jim makes them.
The worst case I can think of would be Teri Hatcher's role in Tango & Cash, and even then, she still serves a plot point and uses her job as a stripper to help Stallone and Kurt Russel evade police capture. The problem with women in Duke Nukem's world is that they're all just pointless T&A, alien impregnation targets, or some combination of both.
It was kind of laughable for a game or two, and worked a bit better when they were making fun of tit-tastic anime and video game characters in the similar title, Shadow Warrior, but now it's just gotten to the point of being offensive. Had anyone wanted to make things a lot more parodic and a lot funnier, they would've thrown in a bit where Duke was in drag, or actually gender-swapped. "I finally got me some of these!" "Oh, they're real, and they're fantastic."
I like to think Gearbox was primarily working with the groundwork already left by 3DRealms, so I don't blame them entirely, but I wish they'd been willing to put a little more work into fixing something so obviously broken, both on the content and the technical fronts, even if it meant further delaying the game's release.
And, @Shinobi13, you sound like part of the reason garbage like Family Guy is still on the air. Please stop, and take some time to look up "parody" in the dictionary.
Many and myself said it above, you can't view Duke as conventional character that you see in a movie so don't review Duke as a character. But you know what, lets start reviewing oldschool video game characters. I want a review from Gordon Freeman, Mario and the ship from Space Invaders.
though they very well may have failed, duke nukem guys are making fun of 2nd and 3rd tier action heroes (Lundgren (whom i love), the Boz, and innumerable other stiffs who tried to be one of the big boys, but couldnt pull it off.
the big muscles and blond flattop arent action hero tropes? the womanizing? the cigars, the one-liners? those all look like attempts at parody to me. again, they may suck, but that is a different story.
they are referencing a stereotype that is an amalgamation of characters we have seen. if you try to pin it down to much, you miss the point.
in conclusion, your review was right on, your opinion that the parody sucked is perfectly reasonable, your opinion that he isn't really a parody seems, to me, on much shakier ground.
I got an excelent article a friend of mine worte, but its in spanish:
http://www.radiolevelup.com/2011/06/14/duke-nukem-el-ultimo-dinosaurio/
You like to be a douche on the internet, so you're a fucking douche. damn. this is pretty easy.
I find the Duke hate coming from critics as of late to be both laughable and unjustifiable. Is the game a masterpiece? Definitely not. Is it worse than ShellShock 2: Blood Trails and fucking Daikatana as many reviewers are claiming? No. Hell no.
This game (and series) is a comedy, - a farce - not a parody. If you don't find it funny, then that's perfectly fine. You don't need to defend your position if people want to insult you; they're not getting paid to write about video games. Just ignore the retards and enjoy yourself... kind of like I'm ignoring Duke Forever's reviews and enjoying the game.
The parody in of it self reflects a few main things. Action games, movies, and American patriotism. The parodies? Well the power suit joke, the crack at the half life crowbar. The game is packed with parodies. Now you will straight up argue "but Hriki thats not duke himself, what does he parody" Well you see, every product, movie and package requires a face. Duke nukem is that face, he is the context in of itself that allows for the parodies to shine through. He is only there for the sake of fueling the experience, you need a car to drive, as you need a character to play through a story. In this light we can understand that dukes parodies are contextual. He is not just a parody of one thing, he is a combined effort. You do not need one particular context to be a parody! Scary movie, parodied many different movies, and had the characters in it that were also parodies themselves who helped propel the movie along! Do you really remember the characters in scary movie? Or do you remember the scenes parodying American beauty, scream, 8 mile, brokeback mountain. You are not required to subscribe to one solid context to be a parody. Duke nukem is the name and character you take for a ride, the game in of itself is the parody! His one liners are only ever delivered when required, contextually so. He is a shell, for the sake of parody. He is required for it to work, and the over the top attitude, and one liners are only evidence of that.
As for the character blatantly, without the context of the game.
Die hard attitude, with an arnie physique, wearing an 80s camp action outfit. Cliche' cigar and shades, and ash one liners. He is not the parody of one thing, he is the synopsis of an entire history of action entertainment. The perfect mule to pull you along the (purposely) camp and satirical experience that is duke nukem.
You're ill-informed or researched really. Duke is definetly a parody, in the way hott fuzz parodies over 100 cop movies, yet...the characters are quite original in of themselves (other than angel). Now that was a parody wasnt it jim? But Angel isnt just the parody of one character is he? But he is the perfect parody of the hard cop ideal that we have seen throughout all of movies. The perfect mule to pull you along a movie of satire and parody. As duke nukem does!
Maybe you felt the same disillusion that most felt jim, but you channeled your anger differently. But there is a simple answer Jim, straight forward and you wouldnt look so much like you are trying to be right if you got it.
He is no longer RELEVANT! Got it, good
I wasn't aware average men walked around murdering aliens and spouting off one-liners while giving unlimited amounts of money to strippers.
See how walnut100 solved this in a single paragraph?
He's CLEARLY a satire - if not of something specific, then just of machismo in general. Not that he's funny or interesting, but how ON EARTH does the satire fly over anyone's head? A bad satire is still a satire. Next I'm going to be told a bad game isn't actually a game.
Also, as for Duke Nukem Forever, you could argue that it's so bad that it's a parody of bad games i.e. it's so bad it's a JOKE.
lol
However, the orginial Duke Nukem 3D is an excellent, varied, DOOM-style game. I mean, what, DOOM is a bad game now? Lol at calling it slow-paced. This is the game where you can run at 60 mph and pass every level in about 5 minutes if you're skilled enough. On top of that, it's extremely challenging, doesn't counter any meaningless complexity, and the levels are vast, filled with secrets, and non-linear, UNLIKE a Bulletstorm, which is merely average at best (Serious Sam is pretty cool, though).
At any rate, this is all just moralizing. Even if the writers' intents were for us to envy Duke (lol), even if it WASN'T satire, no sane person would take it seriously. They would laugh anyway - if not with the game, then AT it, then enjoy it if there's anything to enjoy. So what have we done? We figured out that Duke Nukem is pretty offensive - somethings which could have been gathered even without playing the games, assuming you're even offended by this stuff IN THE FIRST PLACE.
In short, we've been told something very obvious, something seperate from the mechanics and design of a game - the most important areas of a non-story based genre - and we've just wasted our time.
Are you from Hull?
We all fucking know what Duke is! A sexist macho man....that's what he always ways.
so stfu
Jim Sterling ir right. End of.
