The DSi will have more RAM, games that require more yet to be confirmed photo

Nintendo’s newly announced DS revision, the DSi will have more RAM than its predecessors. The revelation of the upgrade has been brought about by an unusual source. In an interview with TechTree, Opera CEO Jon von Tezchner said that his browser would utilize the newly acquired RAM more efficiently.

From the interview:

Yes, the DSi has more RAM than the DS Lite. In addition, with integrated Opera coming with the DSi, it will use RAM more efficiently.

Will this translate to the games specifically built for the machine? Nintendo hasn’t commented on the enhancement, so we’re a bit in the dark. Although, I believe it’s only a matter of time before the amount of Pokemon shown on-screen jumps from 10 to 150. In that vein, I really hope all the Pokemon are Gravelers -- because those things rock.

[Thanks, Adam!]

This would certainly help the lag I started getting after chapter 4 of DQIV.
No it wasn't random, you can recreate it by walking under the tombstone in your Lobster-King hometown.

If there's gonna be more ram, then i wonder what other upgrades are in the system.

I'm sorry, what was that? Region Lockdown? Still a virtual boy.

I'm guessing since the screens are bigger, they will have better resolution. I think that is what the extra RAM is for. Of course, only the DSi exclusive games will take advantage of this.

The RAM is most likely for the Opera browser. It came with its own RAM cart, but still was slow as shit.

Tbh, I see the DSi as a bit more of a downgrade to the DS because of the removal of a GBA slot. I'd get one if it wasn't for that one flaw (I like backwards compatiability)

However, I think the extra RAM is slightly pointless... unless DSi exclusive downloads will utilise it

So really this is forcing people to buy a new DSi if they want to play the newer games because of the extra RAM? Of course this will happen as that turns into more profit for Nintendo!!

I spent like two days training my graveler to be awesome, and then I remember that it can only evolve through trading... GraGh!

Anyway, I only got my ds lite like 3 months ago, so im kinda bummed that a new one was announced. But MY lite is red, not crimson and black, RED! Nahahahahahaaaaa.

Am I missing something, or is that joke dependent solely on the reader knowing that Graveler is a Rock-type Pokemon? I wonder only for the sake of you're sanity.

That last line elicited a groan from my jaded thorax. Well done.

The more people complain about the lack of a GBA slot, the more it reminds me of when Nintendo said the DS wouldn't supposed GB or GBC games.

I wonder what else has been upgraded under the hood, and if it has been increased in any significant amount. Otherwise, I await the DS1.5 jokes to start up (again).

Yep, anyone that knew this was coming with the browser knew it would need more RAM integrated. They aren't going to break compat with anything though, so this is likely meaningless, though homebrew could benefit, like the RAM expansion on the PSP Slim did.

I hope they have some sort of backwards improvement feature for the games not using that extra ram to implement texture filtering for 3d games at least. The PSP has 32 MB of onboard memory and the difference between PSP and DS games, graphically, is night and day. I love my DS, but all the really good games I've played on it have been in 2d, because the system's just bad at 3d.
