The day the Zunes stood still: Every 30GB Zune in the world has died!? photo

This is not strictly videogame-related, but it's such an incredibly freaky story that I'm sure you'll all forgive a rather tenuous link. Unbelievable reports have come in claiming that every single 30GB Zune in the world spontaneously died at 2AM this morning and now refuses to work.

According to the reports, the Zunes reset, powered back up and proceeded to freeze on the loading bar screen at roughly the same time. At the moment, no conventional means of resetting has worked. Due to the bizarre simultaneous nature of the crash, a number of people are now referring to the event as Y2K9.

This is incredible, and can't be good for a company that brought us the infamous red ring of death. Quite how Microsoft is going to live this one down after producing a terminally ill videogame console is beyond me. Just to test this problem, our very own Brad Nicholson called his girlfriend, who owns a Zune. Sure enough, it's broken.

Rest assured, I'm laughing my arse off as I type this. It's probably the craziest story we've had in 2008, and right on the last day of the year, too. Thank you, Microsoft: your commitment to quality hardware never ceases to produce pure gold.

[Update: According to Major Nelson, they fixed the issue a very short moment ago. His Zune wasn't working, either, but magically fixed itself. Tech support had no clue of a fix when we asked them about it, though. Whatever happened might have happened of its own ghostly accord. Weird, weird stuff.]

[Update Update: Okay, now we're hearing it's NOT fixed. HAHA! This is the gift that keeps on giving. Apparently, the issue has something to do with the new firmware being unable to handle today's "leap second," where one extra second is added onto the day. Or something.]

Zune owners should express their discontent toward Microsoft the same way that Xbox owners do.

Go out and buy another Zune. The next one will be perfect. You'll see.

I hadn't turned on my 30gb Zune in a few days, but I did after reading this story. I watched in nervous anticipation as it booted up and the black screen switched on, the familiar ZUNE logo smiling at brightly.

The loading bar inched forward, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and I thought, here we go, it's going to load up the GUI and everything is going to be great. Alas, once the bar reached 100%, there was nothing. No response. A media player now as dead as Anna Nicole Smith, its usefulness in life debatable, but the circumstances surrounding its death making the front page.

To quote Ron Burgendy, with a selective edit: "And you bricked every 30gb Zune on the market? How'd you do that? Heck, I'm not even mad; that's amazing. How 'bout we get you in your p.j.'s and we hit the hay."

Really... first the 360 failure rate and now this? Sorry but im starting to honestly wonder if an outside force needs to step in for Microsoft in regards to making sure things of this scale do not happen.

As much as this is a bummer to me, I am finding the developments to be most delicious. Gives me something to do before work. I had mine up and running by disconnecting the battery, but then I hooked it up to the computer and things went to shit. haven't been able to get it back.

This is spectacular. Microshite should really just drop out of the hardware market. Their inability to produce reliable hardware is embarassing and someone needs to step in and slap them on the wrist.

A leap year eh? I mean, you can't really blame them. Who could've seen that coming?

I had a 8GB Zune before I got an iPhone so this is pretty sad. I almost upgraded my Zune.

what can i say? buy creative next time. its this kind of stuff that keeps me on a PC instead of xbox360 / ps3 / wii.

Just adding, the Z2K9 (as it's been nick-named) effects all 30 GB models with the 3.0 firmware or higher.

Thanks a lot Microsoft. First those pricks give me the RROD, then they mess up my computer, and then brick my Zune. ALL IN ONE WEEK!!!

Wow, this is massive fail on a truly EPIC SCALE,one that resembles the whole y2k panic, only this time it comes true. Thank god I spurred both Ipod and Zune, deciding to my a nice, 10 gig, very relaible MP3 player, looks great too.

MS has sufficently shot it self not only in the foot, but the other foot, both legs, left arm, ass, torso, oh and lets not forget, the head.

How in God's name will they play this down I do not know, I haven't laughed this hard in AGES, Thanks Destructiod!!

Yeah, I just got an email from Mr. Burling about this. Apparently today has a "leap second" in it where the day is one second longer than usual. One second has caused the Zune to flip out.

Yeah, so I was driving to work today and wanted to listen to some podtoid, and my zune wouldn't go past the loading bar. This explains it. Thanks MS, I got an RROD and I don't even own a 360.

This is some amazing shit. I was gonna beat up my little cousins this morning after thinking they messed up my Zune, then go online to find this. After waiting a couple of hours my Zune ran out of batteries. I figured after charging it again it would work, but no, it just went to the startup screen and fucking froze AGAIN.

Wow... good thing I have a Sansa!!

Even if it does only have 4GB... but mine works. :P

Maybe we should all just take the broken Zunes and throw it at Microsft's building... it would be faster than shipping it to them and wait. Heyo!

I didn't think Microsoft could think up something more embarrassing than it's 360's RRoD, but I guess they're looking to ensure their place in history as the worst hardware manufacturers in history. My rockin' Ipod is still rollin'....three years strong, and only suffers from a week battery life.

I haven't lost a Zune, but my 360 RRoD'd so I can share in their pain.

A guy on the official Zune forums just posted this:
"I have had my zune for 3 years (it is the original 30g) and it has worked flawlessly until today. i believe the zunes freezing was somthing planned or mistakenly programed into the hard drive because neither my zune nor computer have been connected to the internet in over a year, therefore it cannot be somthing that has recently been downloaded to my zune. i am only able to write this because im at my friends place using his computer"
...Interesting
