The day that evil won: Wii Fit outsells Halo 3 in the U.S. photo

Lets start with the facts.

Nintendo is a giant, evil corporation that is hellbent on ruining videogames, the world, and everything. The only things standing in their way are a local, "Mom and Pop" software developer called Microsoft, and a plucky, underdog electronics producer named Sony. For a while, Sony had just barely fended Nintendo off with something called the PS2, but lately it's been Microsoft leading the struggle to keep Nintendo at bay. With the record breaking sales of Halo 3, a game universally accepted as the most wonderful thing ever made, Microsoft had proven that no matter how many battles Nintendo may champion, the "good guys" were still winning the war.

That's all over now. Via a combination of highly effective viral marketing, and insults used to humiliate the consumer into submission, Nintendo has convinced the world to buy a game that it doesn't want; a game that forces the player to become more aware of their own bodies by making them move their arms and their legs. Some people call that "exer-gaming". I call it blasphemy.

By selling over 6 million units in the United States, Nintendo has official stolen videogames from "us" (13-24 year old males who are too sexy to even move) and given in to "them" (women, children, and old people, many of whom are not sexy at all). That's right everybody, the latest NPD numbers show that as of February 2009, Wii Fit has outsold Halo 3 in the United States. There are now more people in our country using videogames to fake-hula hoop than people using them to fake-murder their friends.

Game over, man. Game over

Breakfast cereal also outsold Halo 3. Considering Wii Fit nor breakfast cereal is a game, it doesn't matter.

Wii Fit isn't even a game. But the same can be said for Halo 3, so whatever.

this all started at the E3 presentation where the Wii Fit demo told us that Reggie Fils-Aime was "overweight".

How does Nintendo DARE, to be successful with something that doesn't cater to my tastes?! Also know as the HARDCORE taste, the best taste there is since someone labelled it! HOW VERY DARE YOU, NINTENDO?!

Also, there's more butthurt here than in a all you can eat brothel.

As troubling as it is to hear that Wii Fit has accomplished this, at least it was something unconventional, unique and innovative. You now, something rarely seen in the gaming industry.

It also proves one other thing: When there's a game that deeply interests the expanded audience, it can and will outsell any hardcore game. Whether its all casual or a bridge title games like Brain Age, Mario Kart, Wii Sports and Wii Fit. These games have shown that not only do they have a longer-lasting shelf life, but they continue to see to solid sales many months after their release.

I think Nintendo deserves the credit for helping to also give gaming a positive spin back in the media and public eye with games that focus on education and exercise... even in ways Nintendo did not predict would happen like how handicapped people are using Wii titles for rehabilitation. You won't see that happen with Halo, Mario Galaxy or KillZone 2.

Let's face it, this news comes as a disappointment only because Wii Fit does 2 things hardcore gamers don't really care about: not being a "real game" (Wii Fit is exercise entertainment after all) and getting off the couch to do to something a bit more productive than being glued to the tv while pressing buttons on a game pad. On the bright side, it's not like Halo 3 deserves all of the praise and success it has received anyway. As fun as the game's multi-player is, the franchise borders on the edge of mediocrity.

@JHolmes,

I have no problem with you article. Sterling shouldn't be having ALL the sarcastic fun around here.

@C4Vicious,

I know when I come to D-Toid, what I'm primarily looking for is rock-solid, straight up journalism. Jokes take away from facts and thus, have no place on the internet. ESPECIALLY on a site dedicated to something as serious as videogames.

Also, the amount of copies of WiiFit sold is hardly an indication that the US is trying to get into better shape. It's an indication that the public is continuing to be stupid, mindless drones who think throwing money (FAR too much money, by the way) at a problem will make it go away.

For 10 minutes a day and no money at all, these people could be getting in shape, but instead they're wasting their money on a novel idea (just like they did with the Wii in the first place) and letting it sit in the corner as it BURNS THEIR CALORIES FOR THEM!

And I realise that last line seemed harsh towards the Wii and, while I'm not really on the Wii bandwagon, I don't mean to say that the system is a waste. I mean that, from what I've seen, the majority of Wii owners bought the system because it was the "hip new thing," played it for a weekend, and haven't touched it since.

Let's stop the Halo bashing for just one sec, and fully realize what has just happened.

Wii Fit just outsold Halo 3.

Haven't these people ever heard of going outside and, I don't know, running? Jogging? It's certainly more effective than wiggling around on some board. You don't need a game (not really) to tell you you're fat, and that's what makes me angry. Nintendo is making money off of stupid people who think some workout program is actually going to help them lose a ton of weight, which it won't.

Only in America :(

ummmm...i thought it was a concise blurp/rant that shared both qualities of sarcasm and humor and not an article in PCworld? Good Job Holmes. So im sorry if i do not get some of the points Dtoiders are making, even though many of them were hilarious.

As for the content, i know its sad, it's as if 'legally blonde 4' became the best box office hit of all time...you see its not really a movie with depth or plot and would doubtfully be funny, but mainstream yes, makes a crap load of money, also yes!

My fullest respect to any company that can do that, whether in the case of Wiifit or Halo 3...but is it something for me? i guess not.

@Jon,
I certainly don't think that you were being a douche. I'm saying that you put yourself so far in your direction that at times it almost seems like an agenda. Jim can get away with being sarcastic with similar articles because we know that Jim is a fan of video games on all systems and will take a crack at all of them if given the chance. But with you, it's a different story. It's almost as if you take any opportunity to get a dig in on any other system so long as it's not the Wii.

I've seen comments that you've made on others' blogs that don't mention the Wii in any way, shape or form, taking aim and comparing to how the Wii is better. No other editor here takes this approach to anything. It just comes off as completely unprofessional. And from an editor of all people.

Please don't take this personally. I think that you're a great writer. I really do enjoy your views on a lot of things. Your reviews are oftentimes very insightful. And I think it's a great thing that you're sticking up for a console that gets a lot of flack. It could use a champion to remind people that it really does have great games on it. But at times, it feels like you go overboard.

Take your Dead Rising review, as an example. You had so many people mention that they couldn't take the review seriously because of your known slant. That's just counter-productive. A Wii review from you comes across as preaching to the Wii choir, while simultaneously being viewed as outright bias viewed by others. It should be illuminating to all (well, to most, anyways). This behavior can only make fans of other consoles more defensive. They'll go from disliking the Wii to outright hating it. And that just seems like it goes against what you're fighting for.

Back in the day, Summa was all about his anti-Wii agenda. I just don't see much difference in his crusade and yours. And I know that you're so much better than that.

In short, I would love to see you gain some level of balance. In my perfect world, you could still love the Wii best. But you'd recognize that there are other systems doing great things, and they're not a threat to your interests when they do. I would love to see a review by you for a game on any other system that shines a light on the great things it does without a single reference to the Wii.

I've got a lot of respect for you. I also have expectations for your potential. I know that you can reach it.

By the way, I'm happy by this turn of events. I want to hear more cries of people threatening to quit gaming or breaking down because Nintendo has abandoned them. When I hear nonsense like that, I realize that despite all my time spent with this hobby, I am not so emotionally invested that I lose myself over something as silly as people buying stuff that you don't buy.

Nobody hear realizes that getting fit, isn't fun. At all.

Who ever wanted to just run laps during P.E.? Fuck that noise, you wanted to fucking play some god damned Dodgeball or Touch/Flag Football. Fuck all this bullshit about doing 30 pushups and 30 situps, that shit was more boring that watching paint dry and then going to watch molasses run down the Himalayas in the winter time. Without a jacket.

At least WiiFit try's to make exercise slightly enjoyable.

If I was just running all day, I'd probably just run to the nearest Mcdonalds and play with my DS while eating a Big Mac fucking damnit, and I've actually done that.

That's how BORING regular exercise is. Free or not, boring is boring.

Thanks Haxan, for the feedback and the compliments.

All I can tell you is that I don't have any sort of agenda, and it sucks to hear that I come of like I do. I don't remember taking a dig at any console... ever. Does not liking Halo 3 mean I don't like the 360? I don't know.

But that doesn't matter, the point is that you're not the only person to say I come off like I'm biased, and as easy at it would be to write off such criticism, I'd like to take it head on. Maybe I should swear off reviewing Wii games for a bit, and beg Jim to let me review some PS3/360 games for a change?

I don't know, I guess that would only work if I got PS3/360 games to review that I actually liked. I know I would have given Noby Noby Boy a 10 (for $5, the game is perfect. For better or worse, it came out exactly like it was supposed to), SF IV a 7 (too much old SF stuff missing, not enough new stuff put in to replace it, otherwise a great game), and RE5 an 8 (campaign gameplay is disappointing by RE4 standards, but the graphics are great and Mercenaries is more fun than ever).

Would those scores have done enough to show that I don't have an agenda, or would I have still come off as a biased man?
megaStryke's Avatar - Comment posted on 03/22/2009 12:03

The problem with that, Jon, is that there is a double standard in place for the Wii. If you were to review 360 and PS3 games exclusively, no one would think badly of you. If you were to review Wii games exclusively, the crowds would be up in arms because you have a Nintendo bias. The fact that you focus a lot of attention on the Wii is extremely rare and extremely refreshing and it doesn't come off as biased at all. I understand that you have things that you look for in games and the Wii satisfies those desires. If others take issue with that, that is their problem and you shouldn't have to do anything to appease them.

I think we need to be aware of the difference between a game and an exercise machine. Can we really count a product that is marketed as a weight loss machine? Indeed it can be considered a game, just like rolling a ball around the floor could be if we came up with enough rules. However do we compare ball sales with Halo 3 sales?

I think there needs to be a line drawn.

I will defend Wii Fit as a legitimate application THAT DOES WORK as long as you use it regularly and you continually push yourself to do better with the exercises. However, even I agree that it doesn't qualify as a "game" per se.

That said, it's selling very well and it's conduit is a game console. If you people can't get over that fact, that's your problem.

You people who are bitching about Wii Fit don't seem to have a problem with PS3's "Folding@Home". Well..well.. that's not a game either!! HORRORS!!!

OMFG!! Netflix isn't a game either! WTF was Microsoft thinking by allowing that to exist on a 360?!

We're screwed! Gaming is now dead! All of our consoles are contaminated with non-game functions! AAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

Jesus. Grow up, people.

Just a question for you Jon and maybe this is a stupid question, but are you the only D-toid editor who reviews Wii games? Also why didn't you review Noby Noby boy, I think with a game like that the more views you have of it the better. Not that the reviews provided were insufficient, Jim and (I think it was) Anth made some good points.

Agree with megastryke's arguments over Haxan's

I do find the fact that Holmes reviewing Wii games is the equivalent of samit doing sports games. There is a sort of expertize and vested interest in the product and a much more CRITICAL eye for reviewing its games.

But then again i completely respect Haxan's opinion and queries and think he made some valid points from a perspective that tries to see holmes reviewing more PS3/360 games, but not to mean that there is a bias for the Wii.

Don't know why we are plotting your career path and strategy holmes, but hell, i hope you're happy with all the advice.

@Everyone that doesn't like Halo 3 being outsold-
Go buy another fuckin' copy of Halo 3 and shut up. WiiFit became number one because people were swooping up on 5 or 6 copies at a time at the local Walmart. If you don't like the results, go do something about it, namely buying more Halo 3.

Every one of Holme's Wii arguements ends with him relying on 'the majority' as part of his Nintendo superiority complex. Well here's the big flaw with Holmes' stuff.

The majority is usually stupid.

The majority say McDonalds is the best restaurant ever.. does this make McDonalds the best restaurant? NO
The majority still buy Britney Spears albums... does this mean she's on top of the music industry? NO
The majority elected George W Bush to a 2nd term... does this mean he's instantly better than any 1 term president? NO

@Jon,
I appreciate you giving it some thought. As for you reviewing games on other systems and would it change the way people see you, I think it would go far. I know that I would really like to see what you have to say about games on other systems. And I know that most, if not all, of Destructoid's readers appreciate having multiple opinions on all titles. It hink that overall it would be welcome.

A side bonus would be that it would give readers a broader idea of your tastes. People would be better able to gauge how your reviews would apply to them if they have a greater understanding for what games you enjoy aside from Wii games.

Analitic does make a good point. You shouldn't do this just because a bunch of people (including me) are bitching about it. I just think that it would help validate your opinions in the minds of a larger audience. But that is just my opinion. So take it for what it's worth.

Finally, I do want to restate that it is good for the Wii fans to have a champion in you. The system does get a lot of flack. And while much of it is deserved (and which console doesn't deserve some amount of flack), it does kick out some great games that shouldn't be overlooked. I know readers like megaStryke like to see that they are being represented.
