The Darkness II finally has a demo on the way photo

2007 doesn't seem like it was that long ago, but it's been almost five years since The Darkness was released. Finally, its sequel is definitely on the way and 2K Games has announced a demo for The Darkness II that you can look forward to. Here's a few dates you'll want to remember:

  • Tuesday, January 17th: The demo will release worldwide for Xbox Live Gold subscribers
  • Tuesday, January 24th: It will release worldwide for the rest of XBL members, Steam users and North American PSN members.
  • Wednesday, January 25th: PSN members in Europe and Asia can finally check out the demo.

Other than that, you can wait in anticipation for The Darkness II to release on February 7th for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Who's excited to take control of Jackie Estacado and The Darkness once again?

While I know theses two companies are different, seeing The Darkness get a sequel brings me hope that maybe just maybe Disney will make A turok 2.

But considering they closed down Propaganda studios I have no idea whod make it now. Though believe me if I had the money I'd have done everything in my power to buy the IP and get a studio to make the game. Same thing with Dino Crisis.

This world just needs more dinosaurs, period.

There was already a Turok 2 *and* 3 on the N64!

What are people's thoughts on The Darkness II? I am tempted to pre-order on Green Man Gaming because it's $38 right now, but I hate getting burnt :/ I never got to play the original because it wasn't on PC, so I don't even have that to guide me. It looks crazy awesome, though.

I went back and tried to re-play the original Darkness game when I read bout the sequel. I remember having so much fun with it, and I love replaying old games that I enjoyed before the sequel hits...What a bad move, that game was terrible.

I think many of us have fond memories of it since we played it during a time when Xbox 360 games were very rare, and shooters even rarer. It came out at a time when we were lucky to get one great Xbox 360 game every 4 to 6 months. Everyone really enjoyed it when it came out because they were happy to have something...anything.

Go back and play it now. Jeez. Wow. What a terrible game. It controls like garbage. I really mean garbage. I have been gaming for over 25 years. I was playing shooters when they were a new genre. I have never, ever, controlled a game that played as poorly as The Darkness does. It is like trying to thread a needle inside a rampaging tornado with two bum arms while having a stroke.

You can't defend it. Don't even try. Don't say "You must suck at the game. I have no problems with it". You're lying if you say that. You're lying through your teeth.

The first game is one of my favorite games ever. Mike Patton's performance as The Darkness was worth the price of admission alone. Can't wait.

"This world just needs more dinosaurs, period."

I also feel obliged to point out that Turok's presence invariably leads to a dramatic reduction in the number of dinosaurs in the immediate area. So your equation

More Turok = More Dinosaurs

is not only false, but in fact an inversion of scientific reality.

@EKGprod & Vance:
That's the problem, opinions of the first game vary dramatically. Though the sequel might address the issues people had with the first game.

The Darkness 2 and Kingdoms of Amalur on the same day. Demos also release on the same day.

I agree with EKGProd. From a gameplay standpoint, The Darkness is not good. The voice acting is excellent (especially Mike Patton), as are the story and dialogue, but the game just suddenly stops being fun midway through Act 3 once the enemies turn into super snipers who can kill you in three hits and soak up more damage than you do on Easy mode.

It controls like dogshit. And I'm not just saying that as a diehard PC FPS fan who has trouble with the dual analogue control scheme. Keyboard-only Doom plays better; this is a fact. The aiming is floaty, the character movement very rough and imprecise. The guns do fuck all against your enemies (the shotgun especially is terrible), and the second half of the game basically boils down to "hide behind shadowed cover and press the black hole button over and over."

However, that game was made by Starbreeze on their engine that works well for stealth and brawling (see Butcher Bay) but not much else. This sequel sports a new engine and a different developer; a quick look at any of the released videos is proof enough that The Darkness 2's gameplay will be excellent.

After seeing the E3 trailer for this, I went and tracked down the original because it looked so awesome. I was disappointed that it was just ok. Then, at PAX, I played the sequel on a whim because the line was short. It blew me away. Best thing I played at the show.

@Fuzunga:

Thanks, good to hear from someone who has actually played it! I got the impression 2 was more just a straight-up gory horror FPS. Is that about right?

The Darkness is one of the better games of this generation of consoles. However, so was Bioshock and then Bioshock 2 happened. Saints Row 2 was amazing, then Saints Row 3 happened. F.E.A.R. was awesome, then F.2.A.R. happened. I've lost faith in videogame sequels as of late. I will still try to remain cautiously optimistic.

Having played Bioshock 2, SR 3, and Fear 3, I can honestly say that none of them were bad. IMO Bioshock 2 is better than the original in many ways, and Saints Row 3 is definitely not as great as the game before it but still a solid sequel. Fear 3 was not made by the original studio but again was still a solid sequel.

This game could suffer from a number of problems but the only thing me and my friends are put off by is the new art style, everything else looks fine.

@Jinx: The Darkness wasn't by any means an flawless game. It had its issues, but also had a lot of charm to go with it. A previous person commented said is true the original had a effy combat system that made me use the Darkness powers more then actual guns. It will still a good game however.

@Jinx Its being developed by Digital Extremes. They did Dark Sector and previously worked on the Unreal series. I have no doubt that its going to be high quality.

The controls are eveb worse than Resident Evil (original)? I havent played The Darkness so I just want confirmation on this point.

@Rammstein

I have to disagree with you on Bioshock 2. I think its poor reputation is a result of the success of the original. If Bioshock 2 had released first I'm convinced people would be trashing Bioshock 1.

You must suck at the game. I have no problems with it. Sorry it's not a 25 year old game.

Single player was amazing, multiplayer didn't work. No one got it for multiplayer anyways. The Darkness 2 should be pretty awesome.

That is all. Good day.

My problem with Bioshock 2 is that it was marketed as a sequel and not an expansion pack. For $20 it was worth the money. But when they are reusing tons of resources from the first game, I don't see why I'm paying full price for it.

You'll feel the same way about Metro 2033 in a few years. The Darkness never had the best gameplay, but it had great atmosphere, story, etc.
