I've had Enemy Unknown preordered for while, and it looks like it's shaping up nicely, not that I ever really doubted Firaxis. However, since it releases on the same day as Dishonored, I will probably be getting my stealth on first.
Their marketing campaign probably didn't help them either. I seem to recall them pushing the fact that there was a new XCOM game in the works. Getting everyone's hopes up then dropping the bomb that it was an FPS. Then some schtick about how they were making the game more modern by changing a beloved TBS game into a FPS ...... because FPS are what sells.
Personally I probably would have been fine with the game if they had called it ANYTHING else. Like I said looked like it could have been a decent standalone IP.
..... reading through that before I hit post apparently I still have some pent up animosity with regards to that whole fiasco, still best of luck to them.
Now that there's a proper strategy follow-up, there's no reason to be upset at a spin-off like the FPS being different.
To be clear, the little gameplay video they showed alone looked like it had really ambitious potential for a new approach to mission-structured FPS games. It reminded me of the level structure/design of Destroy All Humans! so to speak.
I don't see why in this industry we couldn't have had X-COM AND XCOM: Enemy Unknown, as the former could have been a solid attempt to blend Phoenix Wright/Adventure game style investigating and exploration and mix it with the unique weapon designs and combat present in BioShock.
tl;dr I'd really still would like to see the FPS happen. =/
