Yeah, the movie was pretty solid.

I like to think of it as a good supplement to the book, not as something to be exchanged for it.

I imagine the whole thing would be disjointed and suffer from pacing issues for the non-initiated

Never read the book, went and saw the movie and I was very impressed. It was really entertaining, and it was one of those movies that doesn't require you to turn your brain off to enjoy. Metacritic's 57% is quite off.

I think the best description of the way I feel about the movie, is that I'm sad it wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. Only because I wanted so much. But I'm still completely satisfied with what I got. (Rorschach alone makes it worth it. Everything else is just icing on the cake)

And if anyone who saw it liked it in the slightest and haven't read the graphic novel, read it. It's much better.

Whatever else you may say about the movie, you cannot deny the epicness of Dr. Manhattan striding through Vietnam to 'Ride of the Valkyries'.

It's not the book, and it was never going to be, but the decisions that were made, particularly the ending, were necessary and I felt that it worked quite well as a whole. I thought it was well paced, certainly better than The Dark Knight which dragged on a bit at towards the end.

As for the Metacritic score, I dont know whats going on there, the most well known movie critics in Australia gave it 4.5 and 4, so I don't think my impressions have been blinded by fanboyism.

One more comment.

I do deny the epicness of that music choice behind that scene. I absolutely love pretty much every song in the movie, but they all felt so out of place.

Who cares what you think of the movie, I saw Silk Spectre's tits...

...on IMAX.

But really, it was a damn good supplement to the comics, but I can imagine it being a lot less entertaining if you haven't read them.

@dirtyhobo

Yeah, that scene was basically porno. I was sitting next to my cousin's wife so I had to do the move where I pretend to not be interested in all the boobs flying around while staring intently with my peripheries.

DeusPayne: You've got ot understand that hte movie takes place in the 70s and 80s. The music choices were perfect, imo. The book does a better job of making sure you know what year it is.

This is probably the most polarizing movie I've ever seen. "I LOVE IT!", "I HATE IT!". I'm with Cyanosis on every point. I thought it was fucking great, regardless of whether or not I had read the comic before. Also, I'm talking about it here instead of the forums because the forums have been damn near impossible to post in in the past 24 hours.

johnggernaut: So... it takes place in the 1985... yet every song is from the 60s, or 70s at the latest, with 1 song being from 1984, and another being a cover from... 2009.

Yes the songs were good. But they were so cookie cutter and out of place in such a dark dark story. They in no way set the mood as being the 80s, nor did they need to. I mean, Nixon is president, and Rorschach constantly makes reference to the exact date in his monologues. It's not like someone is going to start thinking, "hey, this song came out in 1978, that must mean the movie takes place in the 80s."

I thought it was almost as good as you're gonna get. I enjoyed it for the opportunity to see some of the scenes in the comic imagined but it did fall short of my expectations. The film didn't have the time to really bring you into the universe with the little details and make things have as much impact.

Rorschach was too animated, he walked with a sort of attitude/swing in his shoulders and moved his head too much as he talked. I always imagined the character to be steady and deliberate in his actions. I also thought his voice had too much emotion in it, should have been more paced and monotone.

The music did feel really out of place.

I thought Patrick Wilson was great. Not only did he look just like Dan Dreiberg but his pulled off the role wonderfully.

I was a bit shocked at the scene with Rorchach and the pedophile/butcherer scene but then I realised that the mainstream audience would probably say something like "Oh they totally ripped that off of Saw" if they saw the original scene.

I wasn't too happy with Veidt, he seemed a lot more distant than the warm appearence he seemed to project in the comic.

The "Give me back my face" scene was hilarious even though it was almost perfect in comparison to the comic. It's now second to "Not the bees! Not the bees! ARRRRRGH!"

Speaking as someone who hasn't read the comic (but definitely fucking will now), I thought the Watchmen was fucking awesome. Fantastically written characters (except Nite Owl, who saw next to zero development, guessing that's a movie issue), good plot pacing, fantastic music selection, and it was just all around good.

I have to deduct a quarter of a star, however, because BLUE PENIS. Why Blue Penis Why?

I dug it lots. I think having read the novel actually helped me appreciate it more. The movie had to (for length) cut out some details and a ton of character-building dialogue, so people coming in clean might feel it was too rushed. But if you read the novel, you can fill the holes for yourself and just appreciate the scenes they chose to do. And for those they chose to do, I thought they did a great job realizing them. Rorschach's jail scenes were exactly as I imagined them, with Haley delivering every single line perfectly.

Blue penis? Are you serious? OH NOES GENITALS!! If you wanna be concerned with it, be wondering why Snyder decided to make it bigger than the one in the original comic. My deduction, Snyder loves the cock.

I'm actually really glad they showed it, I was expecting them to be creative with the shots or just stick him in those black pants. Props.

I really liked Watchmen. It's no substitute for the book, but it can help get friends who are not big fans of reading to realize how good some graphics novels are.

You see Manhattans cock at least 2 times in the comic, the same with the movie, its not "the entire movie" I don't see why it's such a big deal, it's just a cock. When you look at yourself in the mirror, do you wretch at the sight of your own? Do you avoid it when washing? :P (apologies if you're a woman. Also, do you cower from them?)

What do you mean by god like? Booming and echoing? I thought his voice was perfect. After all, he was once a man who is now drifting away from humanity, he is somber and distant.

It did change after the bombs went off. I'm guessing because that's the bit they had to rewrite the most. Some of the liberties may seem unecessary to us, because we've read the comic. But when you factor in film limitations and mainstream appeal you can understand a few of the changes. Personally, I think the ridiculous nature of the original ending made it a lot more imerssive because the characters themselves would reject it and think it stupid. But a mainstream audience are more likely to simply dismiss it than to mull over its complexities.

i really enjoyed the movie. i didn't read the graphic novel, intentionaly, as to not ruin the movie ahead of time. i played the game shortly before going to the movie, and i don't think it add anything... at all. (i did enjoy the game though).

anyways the story at it's core is pretty amazing. i intend to read the novel now, or can anyone tell me about the "motion comic"? is it word for word the same as the novel?

because if it's word for word i may just watch that.

Umm Tits? Did you guys NOT see the blue penis? That thing was amazing....

Yeah, the movie was pretty bad to me. I think it was just a bad move to make a film a direct adaptation of a comic book, without changing more than what Snyder did. Seriously...

Rosseh, the penis wasn't really a big deal. I think it says a lot about the quality of the film that there was a blue penis just, you know, out there and there really wasn't any reaction to it by the audience I was in. When I first saw the penis I expected to see some angry yuppie-type person get up and come out.

I wasn't upset by it, per se. But come on, you can't show me a blue penis and expect me not to mention it when discussing the movie. It just isn't possible.

I just got back an hour ago from seeing it and OH MY GOD... I loved it! I loved the graphic novel and I greatly enjoied this. It may not have not been a perfect translation from the story, but I think it is the best they could do while trying to appeal to the general movie audience too. U just feel bad for people that are going in and expecting a big super hero movie like Spider-Man or something. Rorschach looked almost EXACTLY like he did in the novel... it was creepy.

And about Dr. Manhattan's blue cock... I was wondering if they were going to put it in there or not. But guess what? They put it in there! I am actually glad they did, it was in the novel, so why puss out and not put it in the movie?
