Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

I don't think I played any new shooters this year... and I think that covers most everything.
Given Terraria sits on Steam's bestseller chart constantly, I don't think you're alone in loving it. I didn't beat it, but I'm going to give it another go soon now that they did the huge update.
Dungeon Defenders is probably my GOTY, though. I've played a ton of great games this year, but nothing has kept me so obsessed. 86 hours on it, and I've only played single-player (it's meant to be co-op). And the mods etc. will give that little $15 game years of life. Truly puts most "AAA" $50+ titles to shame in terms of quality, quantity, originality, and replay value. Snag it during the Steam sale if you haven't already, or for the PS3/360.
I have also been enjoying games with COLORS other than brown and black the last few months. Dungeon Defenders, Sonic Generations, Trine 2, etc... to quote Captain Murphy from Sealab, "it's like a koala bear crapped a rainbow in my brain!"
As for the best game I've played this year in general, that would be Nier. I liked it for pretty much the same reason as Catherine: well-written story with a bitchin' art style and soundtrack, and decent gameplay to boot.
you should start online in dungeon defenders... way more fun
Other than Terraria, I'd say Skyrim or Pokemon Black/White is my GOTY.
Plus, FREEEEEEEE DLC!11!!1!
Then I bought Dark Souls on a whim, and it turned out to be the most amazing gaming experience I've had in years. The dark atmosphere, the mysterious and understated story, the beautifully precise combat, the level of dedication and commitment required to complete it -- all of these factors combined for an overwhelmingly rich and absorbing journey for a lifelong gamer. It was not unlike reading a great work of literature for the first time, one that you know will color your perception of lesser works for a long time to come.
So, having played nearly every major release this year, I can say without question that Dark Souls is my GOTY, with Skyrim as a distant runner-up.
Skyrim for consoles.
