The Daily Hotness: Too many zombies? photo

All this news about Dead Island makes me want it that much more. So what if it's just another zombie survival game? As if that's a bad thing. Come on. "Too many zombies" is far from a bad thing, especially when it's handled as well as Dead Island seems to be.

Official Xbox Magazine teases a rebirth of "the best game ever," Rage has a not-so-online pass, Nick previews Dead Island, Nintendo patents massively singleplayer gaming, voting for Mass Effect 3's femshep was a mistake, and more happened on 8/12/11.

You know what there isn't enough of?
Dinosaurs

all these zmobies games could be unique all they gotta do is remove zombies add dinosaurs. This would equal mad money.

Imagine a L4D but with Dinos it gets 10x cooler.

What Jawmuncher said, everyone loves dinosaurs EVERYONE, why haven't developers figures this out yet? Slap a few dinosaurs here and there and these games will sell like hotcakes, not that anybody really knows how well hot cakes sell anyways.

also
Ice Cream Sandwiches > Zombies
Bagels > Zombies
Grandmas > Zombies
Porcupines > Zombies

Bagels are so great.

@Hazurr
I played the hell out of that game.
I consider it a flawed masterpiece

I mean I liked bagles, but recently I've eaten too many of them. They're easy to make so out of laziness I've been eating bagels every morning for the last month or so. I guess I've just overdosed on bagels at the moment. I still remember the first time I tasted a bagel, oh how heavenly that was.

I don't know I think bagels and I can get back together at a later date, but for the meantime I need to try new thing, explore new breakfast foods yah know. It's my fault I shouldn't have over indulged myself.

Zombie dinosaurs. The Zombie bears in Undead Nightmare made me shit bricks, so why now?

There is no such thing as "Too many zombies" or "Too many zombie games". There is only "Zombie-based games that are riding off the success of other zombie-based games and don't have any new ideas of their own to separate them from the herd." Dead Island doesn't feel like it will fall into that category.

The zombie meme needs to die -- and stay dead. Too much zombie overload in both standalone games and DLC.

@Scissors

I think it's partially because Capcom did such a horrendous job with Dino Crisis 3 that they effectively killed the sub-genre. I wouldn't be surprised if the big publishers blame the poor sales on the dinosaurs, these days they blame them on everything else *but* the quality of the game itself.

I hope you mean 'Nazi-Dinosaurs'... I mean: Nazi-Dinosaurs > everything else

It's fact

The hackneyed zombies are a concern, but the game's real issue lies in its FIRST-PERSON nature.

Guaranteed dud right there.

The problem as I see it with the zombie game genre is how almost all of them downplay the *survival*. The genre in film has always been a case of "oh crap, they're right outside and they want to get in, and there's hundreds of them." Arguably that sense is more important than the actual zombies.

Gaming's take on zombies has mostly been "Hey look zombies, shoot them all." The medium has done a very poor job of emulating the claustrophobia and sense of dread that is supposed to go along with it.
