Eva, trigun, yu yu hakusho (partially cuz i didnt expect it to be good)....uh...what else....:S (and no not naruto n that other sh*t)
Evangelion is really good though. You can probably just watch the 6th Angel fight in 1.0 though, if you remember the first six episodes of the series well enough. That's the only big difference. 2.0 is completely different from the series.
@LazyAza While how rates Evangelion against the other Gainax anime, or any work in general is up each to individual, you do realize that FLCL, Gurren Lagann, and Panty & Stocking would not exist without Eva, right? Especially in FLCL and Gurren Lagann's case.
Of course but Eva still remains the default "this is the gainax anime you NEED to see" response from the overarching majority of anime fans and I simply disagree. A must watch if you want to experience part of anime history and find out exactly why it was such a big deal in its time sure but if I'm going to pick a gainax show to remember fondly eva won't be at the top.
That said I own the Eva series special edition collection, 3 versions of 1.0 and the blu-ray of 2.0 and I'm probably more excited for 3.0 than any other anime film coming in the future. haha
I think it's a bit less ground breaking than it probably felt 15+ years ago (Anno seems to agree, as the reason for the rebuilds was that he felt it had aged a bit too much), and I was late to the party. Had I watched it as an angsty teen, I might've liked it more.
Was interesting reading Anno's comments that he meant for the show to strong handedly shake arrested development otakus (the Shinji type) from that lifestyle, and that the show would actually be sort of useless for people who actually knew how to have relationships with other people and function in society.
A lot of the tertiary stuff -- biblical allusions and the like -- are all really cool, mind you. The base narrative/central character are just the least cool part of it all.
@KeroseneDreamer: I like tons of anime. Keeping it to series, Cowboy Bebop, Spice and Wolf, FLCL, and Trigun are probably my favorites. Then there's great nostalgia stuff like G Gundam, Gundam Wing, Yu Yu Hakusho, Dragon Ball, etc. Some newer stuff I've enjoyed includes Baccano! and Durarara.
